The Reef Tank needs sand! In this episode I mention a couple ways to add sand to an established reef tank or saltwater aquarium and then show you how I added it to my Reef Tank. This is the second episode in the #ReefTankRebirth series. ReeftankRebirth is a new series I started to share how I am working on bringing this 210 gallon Reef aquarium back to life.

That's a nice tank. The deeper sand bed always gives a better look! I usually rinse the sand for established aquariums but it is a bit of a process.

I just added twenty pounds to my established tank today, make sure to rinse it til it’s mostly clear moving your hand through the bucket along with the hose. Then dump all the water out and use a measuring cup to slowly add the sand to where you want. Then mix the sands together, I used my hands a credit card and a turkey baster. Added a little prime too just in case. So far so good

If you have added live sand and the tank is cloudy is that dangerous for the fish or more of an inconvenience?
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 23 күн бұрын
More of an inconvenience. It won't hurt anything and should clear up.

I run a deep bed and looking to top it off. Don’t come for me. My NO3 is zero and the talk is 8 years old. I’m concerned with how deep I should clean the sand before topping it off.

You’re not supposed to rinse the sand if it’s wet live send it supposed to put it like that if it’s dry sand that would be different. Then, rinsing would be a good idea
@TheCoralReefTalk

Yeah when setting up a new tank the wet live sand has beneficial bacteria. That bacteria is beneficial. Rinsing the sand can help with the cloudiness of an established tank but rinsing in fresh water can effect the bacteria. You could rinse in saltwater, but there is enough beneficial bacteria in the tank that overall adding the sand this way was fine. Thanks for watching.

@TheCoralReefTalk the bacteria in these bags is in the water in the bag not so much the sand. its extremely important to add the water that's in these bags to new tanks especially

1. I like to use a clear plexiglass tube with a funnel on top so I can see easily when it's full. 2. Make sure all pumps and power heads are off for a while to let some of the dust settle. :) I don't use reef live sand but I wash the reef fine sand in RO water until mostly clear. :)
@TheCoralReefTalk

That's awesome, The clear tube is a great solution, very cool. And absolutely rinsing the small particles etc. Will definitely help it clear faster/ not cloud up. Thanks so much for sharing.

Next time try pouring the sand in a 5 gallon bucket with salt water and mix it around a little, when it settles then scoop it out with a cup and place it in your tank. That way you don’t have so much soot and the water doesn’t cloud as much.

Can anyone help I did my reef tank thought I wanted it to be bare bottom and I set it up that way but now 1 clown and one anemone in and I now want a sand bed for my tank if I add the sand and it clouds will it kill my clown and anemone ???? Or would the be safe
@TheCoralReefTalk
@TheCoralReefTalk 3 жыл бұрын
The sand clouding the tank when adding will not harm the fish or anemone. You can also rinse the sand and then it won't cloud as much, but if your using live sand and rinse it you will loose the bacteria.

Also-who cares about the glass. The actual rocks look good. Us a regular razor blade and cut through that easy. Just rinse the blade frequent to get off any 3D particles

totally pointless adding live sand to established tank would make no difference also what you missed saying is the bacteria in these type bags is not in the sand mostly but its the water that's in the bag with sand so should always add that water . alot of people empty out the water and just defeated the whole point of it
@christopherthomson1978

Things are not always perfect and I don't strive to be perfect. This tank went through a lot in the 5 years it was on KZbin. Feel free to check out more videos.
