I enjoy all your videos, but this one in particular really addresses something I was struggling to get my head around! Thank you SO MUCH for all this oh so useful info, and especially for all the hard work you put in to providing and presenting it to us all. Warmest best wishes to you 🤗

It took me about 4 years of working various types of short rows before I really "got" it. Good luck to whatever it is you're working on! :-)

I have been using Sweater 101 (by Cheryl Brunette) schematics for a basic drop shoulder sweater. When it came to shoulder shaping I scoured the internet for how to plot the short rows but found nothing so I didn’t shape the shoulders. How I wish I had found this video before I completed with a 3 needle bind off! It’s just going to have ribbing and become a short sleeved topper. I hope it will work out but if it doesn’t I guess I will rip back and do over properly with the help of your video. Thank you so much! ❤️🙏🏼❤️

Hi Roxanne, have you got a tutorial on adding short rows at neckline to cabled and or lace patterned sweaters? Or is this something you wouldn't recommend?
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
I don't have a video on that topic. With lace, I usually plan to do stair-step shaping, because it's difficult to maintain the pattern with short rows. With cables, I can usually short row, but I have to plan on a case-by-case basis, depending on the type of cable and how wide they are. The stitch count typically needs to be reduced to the number you would have for stockinette at that width, in order for the shoulder not to flare when it's seamed. That means working decreases during the final crossings and/or eliminating background purl stitches in traveling cables. It's usually easier to short row stockinette-based cables than traveling cables, but again, it has to be figured out on a case-by-case basis.

RR, this is an excellent video tutorial! I want to knit a sweater for my mum she is a bit hunchbacked. Now I know I would have to calculate short rows. Do you have any specific tutorial for this type of case? Thank you in advance. Eugenia

It would be great if you apply it on a real project to see the net result because it's a little bit hard to imagine 😅and thank you for sharing your knowledge😘

I am really enjoying your topic-focused instructional videos. Thank you. I have a question re: when substituting short rows for stair-step bind-offs that you demo'd. Should the short rows begin one row sooner than would be the case if one worked the bindoffs? Appreciate all your hard work in putting these videos together.
@RoxanneRichardson7 жыл бұрын
Yes, you start one row sooner. You will "finish" the row you stopped short on when you work across all the sts at the end, and then you will BO on the same (relative) row that you would have with the stair step method.

Thank you. Appreciate the quick reply.

I want to add to the bottom of the weekender sweater but its is bottom up. I think i got my answer but i will have to figure out the math. I will probably have to watch this vid a couple times. Thanks for the info

Hi Roxanne, I have wondered many times if you use this technique when binding off at the underarm on a sweater front and back then with the coordinating underarm bind offs? Thanks for your great videos.
@RoxanneRichardson5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Some underarms have one long BO at the start, and then decreases after that. Others have multiple rows of shorter BOs, followed by rows of decreases. There is a bit of a challenge in doing the version with the multiple short rows, because there is a collision between the rows where the decreases need to start and finishing the short rows/binding off.

I am ok at German and Japanese short rows on purl side but end up with a hole on knit side

What if you have stripes in your project and they are an uneven number of rows so sometimes you need to change color on the side you turn the work ??? :/

Could you use short rows on a neck edge?
@RoxanneRichardson4 жыл бұрын
Without knowing what sort of neckline shape you're talking about, it's impossible to answer. In general, the answer is no. Necklines are typically shaped with decreases, creating a vertical edge. The shaping method shown here is for horizontal edges. That doesn't mean there isn't a neckline out there that couldn't be shaped with short rows, but more information would be needed.

Roxanne Richardson Thanks for your reply! I think I’ve managed it on the back. The instructions are to K53 (of 131 sts), turn and leave remaining sts on a holder. Next row: BO 4sts. P to last 13sts, W&T, K to end Next row: BO 4 sts, P to last 26 sts, W&T, K to end Next row: BO 4sts, P to end picking up wraps as you work (41sts). Leave sts on holder So what I did was W&T on the neck edge (the 12sts which would have had a step BO) and on the last but one row, picked up the wraps before BO on the final row. Repeat for the other sts on the holder, leaving the centre 25 on the holder. It’s worked really well and I don’t have a horrible stepped neckline where I have to PU sts for the neckband. That’s the back but the front has a deeper neckline but I think it will work if I shape with short rows and then BO before shaping the shoulders So the front shaping is started 6 rows earlier than the back. K53 (of 131 sts) turn and leave remaining sts on holder Next row: BO4 sts, P to end of row. Next row K to end of row. Repeat last 2 rows twice more. I’m thinking that i will work to last 4 sts, W&T. K to end. P to last 8 sts,W&T. K to end. P to last 12 sts, W&T. K to end. P picking up wraps, turn and BO first 12sts of the row and then continue with shaping the shoulders as per the pattern which uses short rows shaping and has a 3 needle BO. Will that work? Many thanks for your help (in advance 😊)

I can see you put a lot of analytical thought into this video . But I think it would have been more helpful to have fewer drawings back to back. If you had followed each sketch with a knitted example of what you were explaining that would have been nice.
