Here's some important key tips for a good boss battle: - Attacks that are strong but predictable/readable. It sounds obvious but this is huge, and it's really what makes players feel like they are getting better at your game when they start to see the patterns. - Phases. Nobody wants to fight the same attack forever. Starting a new phase is also a great time for a dynamic shift. Was the boss stationary before? Have it start moving. Was it shooting a short-range shotgun? Have it switch to a laser beam. - Personality. A boss isn't like a regular enemy, it's a character that the player is going to build a relationship with. Give it a little smirk between punches. Or a dizzy face after a spin attack. - Using the game to it's fullest. Boss fights are a special moment, so take fundamental mechanics of your game and play with them. Have your boss disable items, or be healed by bullets during a certain phase. Use the environment and have a boss that squirts slowing goo, or creates walls, or sends you back to the last room if you fall into his portal. If you are looking for boss fight inspiration, I recommend (in addition to the games you already played) Cuphead, DK Tropic Freeze, Hollow Knight, and of course the Souls games (Sekiro is my favorite for boss fights especially).

Here’s an idea since the slimes are “too cute to kill” make it an item! (potential spoilers) Favourite boss: Kill Pillars (ETG) •Love the multiple enemies being one boss, and when the others die the ones left alive become stronger Dragun (ETG) •It’s a frickn dragon with two uzis!! Lich (ETG PHASE 1 and 3) •You get to feel super powerful and cool taking down the final boss of a game, and dodging and weaving your way through a screen full of bullets definitely adds to the badass-ness Resourceful Rat (ETG Phase 1 and 2) •The concepts are very cool and creative, The knives, rat cheese traps, etc. Two frog dudes (Cuphead) •Two enemies working together as one boss, each one tying their attacks together; it’s like an art piece Isaac (TBOI) •A cut clean well boss fight

You are one of the few youtubers I actively wait for uploads from instead of just clicking on them once I see them in my recommended. It also looks like everything I said in my comment on the last video is fixed, and the new bullet colors read so much better since I and I'm guessing a lot more people have muscle memory regarding those colors. Game looks awesome! My favorite boss in my favorite game is Lil Hunter, because at first he seems like complete chaos and completely unbeatable, but once you learn the small little tricks around moving the fight in your favor, it isn't nearly as difficult.

I think mechanical upgrades are always the best, but some stat upgrade fluff can really make the other ones shine. 🤔 Getting a few extra shot upgrades and firerate upgrades will turn the player in to a fountain of bullets, for example. Good luck with your game. 👍

Gabriel from Ultrakill. The whole game is just killing mindless enemies, but then you get to Gabriel and he actually speaks to you, with voice-overs nonetheless. Great video! One of my favorite bosses is the soul master from hollow knight, because at first he seems very strong, but as you master his moveset you learn that he has a few and predictable attacks, with one in particular (along with few others) that has a huge window for attack him. I also really like the second phase twist, where he changes his moveset , making more dangerous and risky to attack him. Overall, as you master his moveset, he’s very predictable and it’s easy to understand. That’s because I think that taking ispiration from him could make a great first boss in your game! :)

My favorite boss fight would be the Trigger Twins, from Enter The Gungeon. What i like is that they both have the same atack pattern, but they aren't coordinated. In the mayority of boss fights, you do the same over and over, cause the boss is coordinated, in this particular bossfight, you don't. That is because the do whatever they want, so you have to improsive, and adapt to the situation both put you in, and i find that very interesting.

Gotta love the Beholster. Big eyeball dude with a bunch of guns, and each gun has a different attack pattern. As the Beholster loses health, the frequency of different gun attack increase, causing them to overlap, such as giant laser + homing rockets, or circle of bullets + minion spawn.

My favorite boss from any game is the photoshop/omega flowey fight from undertale. I like it because it's changes the battles of undertale where usually it happens in a white box where you survive bullet hell attacks but this time the white box is your whole screen. It gives you an extra challenge as well, take the Sans fight from undertale as an example with the white box.

I played through FF7 and I had to look those up since it had been so long. Little late on the favourite boss question, since you already made that video, but I love the Great Armor in Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. It's great because it has two different attacks, telegraphs both clearly, kind of similar, but not fully. So you feel really smart when you predict what to do against it. Also you can avoid both attacks by dodging away, but in one of the attacks you can, when you feel confident enough, dodge towards the armor into a small safe spot under the sword, so you can get some free hits in. It plays really well for different skill levels of players. The other monsters and bosses in that game are really great too. I think well telegraphed attacks are just really awesome.

The bear from the long dark, it leaves you for dead but it's nothing truly special but it really made the lone walks more frightening afterwards, then you must fight it again but for real. (perhaps you 'win' against the boss, but it can attack you later until you actually defeat it).

Phantom Striker from Shovel Knight's "King of Cards" campaign is one of my favorite bosses. I didn't think too much of him on my first encounter, but one of the objectives in the challenge mode is to defeat the boss under a certain time limit with no equipment and only two hitpoints. That challenge forced me to completely rethink how I approached the boss, and I had a lot of fun learning the boss's patterns and taking advantage of all the little openings it gave for you to attack, and the telegraphs which allowed you to easily predict the boss's movement and react.

Nice work with the upgrades, hearing about the research you did in other games was very cool too! Favourite boss, now recently I've been playing Elden RIng, and Radahn is currently my favourite due to the backstory. And a more similar game, one like Hades has a load of bosses I enjoy, like the Valykrie sisters, I have a few reasons why I think them, 1) I enjoy the interactions your character has with them, 2) I enjoy how the 3 swap between each other and 3) I enjoy how they have patterns you can learn but still provide a challenge!

SMT IV's Minotaur. He's the first "proper" boss, and he is designed to "filter" the bad players from the good players, meaning that if you don't understand and exploit the mechanics of the game (In SMT's case, the press turn system and stat altering moves), he will wreck you. SMT Nocturne's Matador has a similar purpose, focusing on the stat altering moves part of the system.

It's so easy to look at bosses from other roguelikes or 2D games and try and basically just copy but it's always interesting taking mechanics from 3D bosses and try and incorporate that into a new setting which makes them stand out, little details are always cool to put in that makes things unique like Hawkeye Gough from ds1 you can fight him normally but canonically he's blind so if you use a ring where your footsteps are silent he doesn't attack till the player attacks but if you don't know that or if you're not paying attention to the story he shoots you with arrows while you're running around

I don't have a favorite boss, but one thing I like in bosses are when they are glass canons. Take the classic Sonic games for example: Bosses can kill you in two hits, in a few of the games a single hit, but you can kill them in 3-6 hits yourself. Contrast that with a lot of the more modern sonic games where health is often infinite (as long as you can reach the rings of course) but the boss takes ages to defeat. That sort of stuff is fine for a final boss, but not the regular ones, it just makes it a slog more often than not. I also much prefer if they vary up their movements and firing patterns as they lose health.

Wall of Flesh terraria. The boss to be summoned has the guide npc be burned in lava or getting a guide voodoo doll and throwing it into lava. The fight takes place in the underworld, hell, and I really like the base mechanic where it starts at one side and forces you to run to the other. You are doing this while lasers, worms flesh eaters and all sorts of stuff are attacking you. This boss enables hard mode. Which is basically later game.

My favorite Boss'(es) have to be Vergil from Devil May Cry 3, you fight him 3 times in the story. And he has a move set extremely similar to your own, being your twin brother. Having a sort of rival through the game gives you something to strive for since he largely kicks your ass the first time through. And being so similar to yourself makes him an extremely fun fight since you largely understand how he works. It makes for an engaging battle that really tests how well you know your own abilities. Weaving in and out of his strikes, countering with your own, getting blindsided when he parries you only to smack you halfway across the stage. It's such an intricate battle.

The first boss that comes to mind is Hades, from Hades. He's just a very difficult boss to defeat, and has an impressive number of very different attacks and to go with it, attack patterns. Basically, he's the final boss, and you have to keep fighting him and losing, to learn from your mistakes and to basically memorize his attacks until you finally beat him after it suddenly becomes very easy after dodging all his attacks.

Flaahgra from Metroid Prime. Keep it busy by attacking with arm cannon and missile attacks. At the same time you have to attack solar reflectors so that they point away from the boss (it loses its source of power). When Flaahgra is stunned, you quickly turn into the morph ball to deliver a bomb. It's an interesting boss because you use the environment and several of Samus' skills. It's a puzzle as well as a boss, like a lot of Nintendo bosses.

Excellent progress! The card art looks amazing but the coins suit so much better. As for bosses, I really enjoy big challenges. Something that gives you a long journey to even see the boss and when you eventually kill the boss you feel accomplished. For example the Fight Cave on Old School RuneScape. There are 62 waves of enemies to pass before the the boss spawns. If you are careful you can pray against every attack he does but if you mess up you have to go through all the waves again. The point and click gameplay seems boring from a far but beating that boss is an absolute thrill.

My favourite bosses are the drednoughts from deep rock galactic not any particular. I love the fact that you have to shot them in special weak spots, so you don’t just shoot at them standing still and sometimes they even come out of the floor!

I don't know if this has been said but you could color code the coins based on power/rarity/fun like copper/silver/gold/red. Favorite boss is Hoarah Loux from Elden Ring, you get to see raw strength as a weapon and I think that's super cool.

I'd thought about coloring the upgrades for that with bronze silver and gold..... but then I'd have to develop a rarity system and all that..... aaaaannnnddddd...... I'm lazy. 😅 But when the whole game is done, and I go back through to improve/add mechanics, maybe that'll be on the list. 🤔

I like just about any undertale encounter mainly because there is little pauses in gameplay (for both the player and the boss) where the boss breaks up the fight with some dialog or something like that. (it can even be comedic depending on the personality) it just feels natural to have some dialog sprinkled in a fight..

I know I’m late but one of my favorite bosses is Gutsy Bones, from Yokai Watch Busters. The whole theme of Gutsy Bones is that it’s a giant skeleton that uses giant coins to get stuff from a giant capsule machine, and what capsule it gets is a different attack. So if it’s red, it’s a fire attack, if it’s green it heals you, if it’s black it blocks your vision for a bit if you touch the areas it makes. And you don’t want gold. An RNG based boss would be cool

I think a cool concept for a boss from a game I really enjoy (Bloons tower defense 6) is Lych. I like it because it heals from your upgrades and sends out damaging shields once it loses parts of its health. Another thing I enjoy is when a boss is just a big enemy like the big goomba from new super Mario bros DS.

My favorite boss is Godrick the Grafted from Elden Ring, because he is just about perfectly balanced for early game. He has this attack where he deals very low damage in an area around him for a couple seconds before doing either a move that is easy to punish if you're close or a move that is difficult to dodge and punish if you're far away. That attack specifically is really neat in my opinion because it forces you to move away from him and then back towards him. Also, his second phase tests almost an entirely different set of skills than the first, which provides a great change of pace.

I think the broken vessel/lost kin from Hollow knight might by taking the crown in my case. The aspekt i always loved the sword combat, and this is the fight that utilizes that to its full extent. There’s also something endearing in the concept of fighting someone with similiar skill and abilities to you.

Mantis Lords. You of know their power, yet you challenge them. It feels more like some duel than a bossfight. They are also easy to learn and hard to master. The way the fight increases in difficulty mid way is a surprising moment and it just works really well.

My favourite boss is pure vessel from hollow knight. I think what makes them (and most hollow knight bosses) is his Rhythm and predictably. Once you can dodge all of his moves and find spots to attack in, it’s just a case of stringing it together like a ‘dance’. Dark Souls also has very similar boss design in my opinion which is why lots of people enjoy it.

my favourite bosses are usually from Zelda and/or Celeste. I´ve never liked bosses from games like isaac or roguelikes, they usually don´t feel like actual bosses, just big enemies that give you a bigger reward before completing a section. What I love in bosses are ways to defeat them that aren´t just deal damage to big HP bars, like using different items or your surroundings

My favourite boss is mother or mega Satan from binding of Isaac, these bosses change the environment, change play styles and throw a bullet hell wall at you, you have to be ready to clench your butt and dodge duck dive and weave. Also honourable mention the beast, music, art and animation is amazing with the 4 horse men and mechanics

KZbin algorithm: we will watch your career with great interest But nah great little series from a chill guy who is passionate about his great little game, I don’t know what is my favorite boss but I’ll let you know 2 things that I can’t stand in the first boss room of a lot of games, Spawners and tanks. Both with the idea that it’s just jot fun to play as you slowly kill then with some meh upgrades you got (meh at least for damages sake) Oh! Also you may want to check out 20 min till dawn, it’s kinda a rogue like wave survivor that has a-lot of interesting upgrades and characters to draw inspiration from!

@@HelperWesley honestly check out the “endless mode” as it is a bit more inline with how your game goes, in that one you can stack upgrades( in that game it also has a lot of negitive effects along with positives) so while it might not be the best to base it off of it’ll at least show ya how the balances can get (although it’s much more bullet heaven then yours)

The Guardian from slay the spire - you hit with alot of damge they go into there shell - if you cannot keep up the damage they wipe the floor with you. Feels like to hocked a big fish you have to give line and pull and the right times. - with the Guardian you need to attack in the correct cycle to do damage and move him into a new state - then wait and build up your armer for the big attack if you do not have a lot of damage to give.

My favorite Boss is actually the Eye of Chutulu in Terraria, because I like simple Bosses with two stages(the secound harder than the outher)and I like it when the Player can dash out of every attack from the Boss so that the Player can actually kill just with skill and time every Boss... Idk why this sentence is so long:C🍉

Oh yeah, straight forward 2 stage enemies can be a lot of fun. Especially when their attacks are well telegraphed so the player can feel great after fighting them and getting out without taking any hits. Revita does the whole "2 stages" thing, it makes each boss fight more interesting, and gives you a feeling of progression during the fight.

Cynthia from Pokemon Diamond and Pearl I think what makes it a good battle is: -There is a lot of build-up to the fight(the whole game is leading up to this fight, you've essentially fought a few mini-bosses right beforehand, and you meet Cynthia throughout the game) -There's a definite power-spike that makes the battle more difficult than you would expect if you haven't already played the game -There feels like validation for the grinding you have done during the game(rogue-likes generally seem to do the opposite of this, for example you COULD beat "Enter the Gungeon" on your first time, but you don't because you need to learn how to git gud first and learn the mechanics first), but it feels good to have some kind of tangible progression in some way

BLACK RAINBOW from Narita Boy. I think it’s the unsettling appearance, the sound design (scream-y!), and especially the (handdrawn) transitions between his different states. Another one from the same game that really stuck was the fight with THE GLOVE. All pretty cool and different attacks that are linked to his rather small gestures. That one took me pretty long to defeat (one attack gave me an extra hard time that includes a randomized pattern of blocks… though never feeling unfair) - and somehow I even enjoyed the detail that defeating The Glove resulted in rebooting (instead of destroying) him and getting him rid of the code that had previously corrupted him. And well, why not close with a third one from Narita Boy? The killer robot H.E.X that is fought during a heavy-metal concert. While I don’t remember that much of the fight, the setting itself was just incredible fun.
