A musician told me that they are a called mezzos to day. She was at her best in Brahms which she said was 'in the fat of her voice' Her performance of Kindertoten Lieder of Mahler is bis jezt he finest I have heard, but there there some splendid voices today. Moving performances. This stark work was a wedding present. Krista Ludwig's performance of this work is different but moving.. Kathleen Ferrier has been part of my life for seventy years, but I have given up ordinating musical performances because when I listen I am moved. This is a beautiful performance of a great work, my favourite Brahms.

@marcaurele50926 жыл бұрын
@franz52892 жыл бұрын

Technology is not the point. We now have 'the best technology' ever--allowing every kind of cheating and patch-in-one-note-at-a-time 'recording--and recordings are the worst they have ever been, because technique/esthetics/artistry/training are all dead and have been for decades. The sort of lying done by modern recordings is completely unnecessary for a great artist like Ferrier.

People will always argue over which is the better performance of this. Personally I like the more robust treatment by Christa Ludwig. But I'd rather listen to ANY decent performance of it than ANY pop music - even the graduate recital of an MFA candidate where I first encountered it. Now, on to give the Janet Baker a listen.

Gospel music and blues both evolved from black slave singing in the 19th century - Talk about music with personal significance! - but I would hardly say that gospel gave birth to the blues. If anything, they are twin children. Such music in the middle of the 20th century was already derivative and formalized by the children and grandchildren of the originals.

You're talking the organized commercial forms, I'm talking folk or grassroots origins. And no, that doesn't mean the black folks were more talented, just more motivated. Give white gospel a listen. And Gerswin. And the ragtimers that influenced him. I have studied folk music in depth, and having grown up in the 50s, am quite familiar with the music of the period.

Why are there no film records of Ferrier singing liv? . One of the great losses to Mankind. Apart from being a great singer, she was a great comedienne. It is said that after singing a deep soulful song, she would gag and have the orchestra falling about. Heck - did I fancy that girl. When she was a telephone operator, guys used to groove her sexy voice and get dirty. She would switch to her most unsexy Lancashire voice and cut them off.

Kathleen Ferrier a legszebb, alt hangú, énekesnő volt. Nagy kár, hogy rövid ideig élt.

You definitely have a point there! It does not diminish the grandeur of Ferrier's performance though.

The singer is Marian Anderson here.

If you can't tel the difference in how they sound, you might at least take into account that Marian Anderson's version (also quite beautiful) is about four minutes shorter.

Marian Anderson was a black contralto of rare perfection. The depth and richness of her voice was quite different from any mezzo.

Whatever nice things are said about Kathleen Ferrier, I'm not arguing about, but she had horrible vibrato. It's always ON, like a guitarist's floor pedal. It makes her voice unlistenable for me. I bought a box set of her recordings a while ago, but can't get any pleasure out of it. That vibrato is machine-like, always on. It's an ugly sound, reminding me a bit of Arthur Grumiaux' overdone violin vibrato. I know certain Japanese pop singers, whose vibrato is way more controlled, intelligent and musical than Ferrier's. For all the sanctimonious platitudes written about Kathleen Ferrier, where is some more honest appraisal? Yes, she had good range and tone, but that vibrato was woeful. Have a good listen next time.

Have you ever listened to Conchita Supervia, a Spanish mezzo? She is a favourite singer of mine.
@russellparratt98594 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencebrown3677 I just listened to her singing Habanera, from Carmen. Certainly an amazing voice. The vibrato is amazing, and so controlled, but it might annoy me. No criticism, just personal choice. Also, I prefer the German/Austrian repertoire.
