The characters are more than just their stereotypes. Sometimes Hima adds little things to flesh the character a bit more and are completely disconnected. Hetalia characters show that sometimes, they are their own people. Hetalia characters are a mix of stereotypes, historical experiences and their own personality (whether it be out of mistake or just Hima's headcanon).

As much as I would love a serious rendition of Hetalia, I'm inclined to agree. I think the main reason Hetalia is so widely appealing is that it's like a political cartoon without the actual politics. Once you verge into darker territory, you can't avoid talking politics. And given the unbiased approach the series takes towards things like WW2 (neither side is portrayed as a true villain), I don't think you could do that in a more serious light without making at least one person angry. There really is no truly unproblematic way to do a series like this. I don't mean problematic as in racist or fascist, I mean it in a way that the series requires some critical thinking on the viewer's part in order for them to understand the author's intent.

14:40 - 17:41 omg this whole section, thank you Hetafacts. As someone who has African countries ocs, this is my fear. This. When working with extremely diverse nations, it gets difficult to personify them. Take for example, South Africa. I personally personified him as mixed because of the diverse population; however, I always have to ask myself if this is the right way to draw a South Africa oc. Just this morning, I got an anon asking why he's colored when the Dutch were the first to create a permanent settlement. I still don't know how to respond. The formation and creation of a nation isn't static or fixed so I'd just thought when creating South Africa, what makes them stand out from their neighbors, because that's how you make your oc memorable. And with that, I tended to give him a lighter skin that, for instance, Namibia and it's something I ask myself frequently if I made the right decision and if it's racist or not. I've seen it happen with Lullindo and her (very beautiful and is *not* Hetalia related) South Africa. Her South Africa is also mixed but many criticized her greatly because of the color of her skin. I personally can't take that. Not because I can't take criticism, but because this plays into a larger dilemma that is way beyond me or any individual, really. It's stressful, it's exhausting, and at the end, I barely feel satisfied. Even as I type this, I'm shaking because I still think that someone out is offended by my own portrayal of the country and that's the last thing I would want. Yes, he's still a wip and I've still got many things to learn about the place but good grief... God, I feel for Himaruya and everyone who personify countries, I really do. Sorry for the long rant. It's something that I've kept bottled up and not knowing when is the right time to express it.
@gunkodumu5 жыл бұрын
Sorry if my English is kind of broken but I really want to express myself ! Personally, I think that you shouldn't fear what others may think, there'll always be someone who will disagree with your opinion... I'm not the right one to give you this idea since I'm in the same case, as a huge fan of history (because of Hetalia) and explored more community/comics about history (SATW, CH, Lully...) and I really want to make my own personifications. The problem is that I'm always scared that someone start saying that I'm copying Hetalia or others... And by the way I can also say that I understand the problem with the African countries and making South Africa mixed is a really good idea ! It's just in-between Black and White, and shouldn't bring too much "drama". Sorry if I rant too much ^^; PS: Lully's designs are incredible *w*
@dulce_bombon5 жыл бұрын
@@gunkodumu Aye, someone who understands ;; Same, bro, same. *pats* I also get scared about making my personifications being too similar to another design. The problem with seeing another person's own portrayal of a country and calling it Hetalia is that it kind of takes away the effort and originality a creator put into the character. The idea of personified country or entity isn't new or is attributed to Hetalia. It's pretty unfair that people would assume so. But I bet you'd make great personifications! I would love to see new interpretations of countries Also, thanks ;; South Africa is hard to personify and this just makes me feel relief so thank you. P. S. Lully is God yes

Yes South Africa is diverse but a majority is still black. It makes zero sense to make South Africa “mixed” to cater to dutch colonisers when America is still white despite being even more diverse. Yes there are many cultures in SA but in terms of looks there’s no question that SA should be black. Australia wasnt made “mixed” despite aboriginals, nor America, Canada or for any other predominantly white but still diverse nation. Just go by what the predominant race is, it only makes sense

If you guys are wondering I’m Mexican. If Mexico gets personified canonically I believe there should Two, Sibling, Sister is in the North (Modern Day US Southwest) and Brother in the South (Present day Mexico). (Edit:Though, I would like to see more women in this show, some on the main cast should've been women to begin with in my opinion. And, don't hate me, but the US was founded by Anglo-Celts. Just to let out some feelings, I got into hetalia this year after I found some videos about it while doing my history project. Ever since then I've been in love with the anime and the characters. This may sound ironic, but Hetalia actually made me a less racist person. I was never racist to begin with, but I did believe in some bad stereotypes about other countries, only because I needed to fill the empty spot of knowledge I had about the countries. After I fell in love with the characters, I felt obliged to fall in love with their country. Russia and Britain are two examples of this and they are my favourite characters, when back then I didn't care much about countries. I used to believe all Russians were lazy alcoholics and strong fighters, that was until I did some research and decided to interact with some of them. Now I realize I was wrong. The way Himaruya described each characters relations also made me interested, which is why I would do research on it. For example, I recently became a Rochu shipper, this led to me reading articles about sino-Russo/Soviet relations. Which led to me eventually passing my history class with one of the best grades. This is where I found my love for history. During the summer I went to the library to find books. I decided to make pen pals from all over the world and is currently messaging someone from Taiwan who is also interested in history. I'm still taking history till this day because Hetalia made me love it.

As Chinese We didn’t quite feel the show is about celebrating nazi and Japanese imperialism, and we are apparently one of the biggest victim of them so you probably can take my words LOL I have to say it’s interesting to see how its English fandom get so messy. To be honest, most of that is just because of cultural differences. I guess for Japanese people, the most horrible part of their history is their war crimes committed in Asia, like Sino-Japan war, but not ww2, so if hetalia not quite sensitive about certain bad things happened in Europe and America it could be somehow understandable, I think the author already did his best. Honestly, as a minority in America, I can see how America was portrayed as a white dude. Even though this country is large and diverse, a majority of the population IS made up of white people. It's gonna be hard to set up a design for a character who's supposed to represent a bunch of ethnicities within one nation, so it'd just be easier to create a design that reflects the majority. Canada is also designed like a white dude, but the country irl is roughly as diverse as America is, yet there's no complaints there (which makes me feel like the ones complaining about this the most are Americans-). Besides, compared to Season 1 and 2, America's design in later seasons has more pigment. Compare him to a lot of the other nations that are also pale: Canada, England, Russia, France, Japan, etc. His skin tone is more tanned, though I'll admit it's not that prominent in a lot of scenes. Sure he still looks white, but it's not the same pasty white as the other countries and it's very different from what he looked like in the first two seasons (though I wish they kept the darker shade of blonde). So wtf is there to complain about?

No justification for the game art of Seychelles, but in defense of Hima's art that you showed in your video, I think it's more or less a consequence of the aesthetic he used in the colouring. In the artworks, the colours he used have a very faded and washed out look, almost like pastel(of which the colour selection tends to be very light); so it seems natural that in those illustrations(specifically the last one), Seychelles' skin, as well as her clothing and hair, will come off as more light or white. Plus, some of them are sketches. As for the coloured art, I think it's because he just didn't pay attention to the darkness of her skin, I mean, even if it seems too light for a person of African descent, her skin is obviously darker than Hungary's; though it does come off more as tan than anything.

Hima’s aesthetic back then: ✨white people✨ (Imao I agree with you dw, I always noticed that the anime use to have all the countries having the same skin tone. Still wrong, and I don’t agree with it, but I can kinda understand it.)

As this channel focuses on history, I think my nitpicking here is justified. (I really love that someone's keeping the Heta world alive, so I have high respects for you.) So: only Italy, Germany and Japan made the Tripartite Pact and were the Axis. The other black countries on the map used in the vid were occupied/colonised by the axis countries - not the same thing! I'm not sure Somalians or Ethiopians would appreciate that classification on the map. Finland was an oddity. As Encyclopedia Britannica explains: "Finland, although it did not formally join the Tripartite Pact, cooperated with the Axis because of its opposition to the Soviet Union (to which Finland had been forced to cede territory in 1940) and entered the war in 1941." At the end of WW2 in Lapland War, Germany and Finland fought each other. Sorry for my rant.

Video is from last year, but I still have so many thoughts. At this point, I *hate* the word 'problematic'. I can't take these sorts of people seriously, but sometimes, I really can't _stand_ them... -_- Hetalia is literally just comedy, in its purest form. The utter lack of politics is baffling to me, the concept is ludicrous, the simplification is absolute, but it's why I love it. I've had this exact same argument with some idiot once. Over all of these points! 2021 will definitely be filled with people who will see this show for the first time and will start to bash it with these stupid accusations. I can't wait to crush them to dust in any arguments. >:3 Edit: watching the video again, goddamn, there's SO MUCH I want to say about each of these points, it's ridiculous how much they annoy the hell out of me. Uuugh.

@Cherry Blossom Ah, one thing first, before anything else. The arguably nazi joke came out of the dub. It wasn't in the original and thus wasn't written by the author. But it's fine that many miss that, I get it. I personally just saw it as dark humor. But there's an aspect about what you're saying that I disagree a lot... And it's usually the disagreement I have with people about this issue. 'Racism' is a New World concept, I believe. It's about _race._ What you're dealing with when it comes to the depiction of SK specifically is an _ethnic_ issue that's packed with history between Japan and South Korea, it's Old World mentality/politics/culture, which comes with heavy history between the two; they aren't exactly best friends. To dismiss it as racism, I think, is a simplification of a huge cultural tick of East Asia... and look, there's way too much for me to explain in a comment here. -_- I don't think it's racism, because racism is a specific thing that's been so cheapened and diluted by modern Western discourse that now everyone is racist for the stupidest reasons. But East Asia is another world. What you see with SK's character is a pretty sharp ethnic jab, and it's offensive, yes. But this is between the Japanese and the South Koreans. (I don't see much wrong with Taiwan, tho, I heard from plenty of Taiwanese who like her character, and a _lot_ of Taiwanese actually do like the Japanese, for some reason...) But here's another thing I disagree with. Jokes and humor serve a specific social function with people, and that is _easying the tensions._ Sometimes it works, like with the ethnic jabs between nordic peoples, or the Britons, let's say; and sometimes it _really_ doesn't, like with the Japanese and the Koreans. Making light about heavy topics, especially those from the past, is not intrinsically wrong. It _can_ help a group of people cope with the past. You can say Himaruya didn't do it right because he's so removed from these cultures (being Japanese and not understanding Eastern Europeans much), but that's another topic entirely. Hetalia is 'innocent' in that way that it's not political. I don't see the strings of anyone's agenda trying to lead me anywhere. That's what I like about it. It doesn't try to shove anything down my throat. It doesn't insult me because of my political opinions. It makes me laugh and it makes me curious about history. It's not racist. In fact, it pushes me to be understanding and it makes me appreciate the many cultures and peoples of this world. I think judging it under a Western lens is the problem. It's not Western. It's _Japanese._
@MayannHanna3 жыл бұрын
@Cherry Blossom Ah, I get it. English _is_ limited on language there, or maybe it's Western cultures in general. I do believe the Chinese might have a word/term for it? I can't remember... :/ But it's why I just call it New World and Old World. The New World is primarily where the modern meaning of racism came from due to its own history. Sorry for the rambling. I just like to be _precise_ about these things.

Hogan's Heroes and 'Allo 'Allo are both hilarious. I'm still hoping for an Ethiopia... but looks like that will never happen. I also follow Countryballs but not Countryhumans (simply because I think that the haphazard "countryball-on-human-body" thing looks awkward.)
@thefae86783 жыл бұрын
The thing is though, despite America being so diverse, we're still stereotypically white people. Does that mean other races don't exist in America? No. Does that mean Americans are all the same type of "Living the American dream" white people? No. If Hima was basing the designs off of how the country came to be, then being colonized by the European countries who are all white, would make America white. Just because a character has a skin color doesn't make it whitewashing, or blackwashing. The thing with Seychelles was whitewashing, because Seychelles is an African country, even if the population there is a mix. But America being white makes sense. I just don't get their logic.
@psimillie2 жыл бұрын
about America being white, I think it’s partially because the whole stereotype around Americans are white, blonde, blue eyed, loud people who wear American flag cowboy hats and eat a bunch of burgers. obviously America is a diverse melting pot and the stereotypes of Americans aren’t that true, but after all, hetalia characters are based on stereotypes. I will say I think that hetalia has some sketchy stuff in it but for the most part I see it as a stupidly funny and weird anime about funny country man doing funny vaguely historical thing. I don’t think people should be taking it that seriously ._.

I've long outgrown Hetalia, but the series was my world during my infatuation when I was 13. I was incredibly cringey back then, and the icing on the cake was how "problematic" I realized the series was in hindsight. Now, nothing can take from that cringe phase, but this deconstruction of the critiques people have for the series showed me how mostly benevolent it actually and I do feel a degree of relief. I appreciate this.
