Probably the fairest review of the CountryHumans fandom. I had to cut a lot (regarding fandom and fandom drama) because the video was already super long. Perhaps I'll do that another day.
Wow. So one copy of this video is totally monetized, but this one is demonetized??? Wtf KZbin.

@@charliotte The country ball humor is very sarcastical and often about history or the news. And it also has very specific rules in the way that the characters are drawn or the moderation. While country humans is just gen z crap with no rule or moderation at all creating many cringe or sexuall content. And lastly the countryball audiance is older and more mature than countyhumans as countryballs are based on historical events or fun facts about it while countryhumans is just a bunch of kids who find nazi germany cool and ship it with the Ussr for some weird ass reason ! as an idiot in the countryhumans fandom (and a moderately recognized figure in the space), i completely agree with just about everything you’ve said. this fandom is problematic and will always be problematic because at the core it’s meant to be political. the fact that the fandom is made up predominantly of teenagers who don’t understand and/or don’t have a proper education concerning history is a disaster waiting to happen. however i do think that the fandom can sometimes be educational-or at the least, get people interested in history.

Heyo! Both a hetalia and countryhumans enjoyer here! (Hetalian on and off for 8 years, countryhumans artist for 3). When I heard you were making a video on countryhumans, I wasn't expecting such a fair review. I agree with /most/ of this but I'd still like to add my lil input. I truly believe the lack of canon is why the fandom was so intriguing yet so chaotic. You already talked about it so I'll leave it at that. Another reason why I think it was chaotic and had such a negative portrayal was because of... what they are.. flag people. When you see a sus drawing its kinda hard to separate it in your brain. For example, if you see nsfw art of APH America, you can at least see him as Alfred, a person, just another anime guy. It's harder to see a CH as a person since they have the constant reminder of what they are on their face, which makes sus arts more off-putting. However, theres a lot of good in the fandom its so easy to focus on the negatives. It got a lot of kids interested in history and taught them the flags of the world, it allowed such a creative community with easy-to-draw characters. It was such a fun and inspiring community to be apart of! But overall, CH is a fandom that suffered massively from the growing pains every fandom goes through (albeit with a lot more nazi artworks..) Every fandom is full of ship-loving children. Thats what fandoms are! I don't think ships and nsfw soley led to its negative reputation, like most people claim, but those combined with the chaos and nazi artworks definitely did. Briefly touching on the nazi part though- I don't speak for all of course, and yes there was definitely a very concerning amount of art and memes within the fandom. But as someone who was in it during its prime, I personally didn't come across /that/ much of it; especially the "cutesy" ones. Which made it frustrating to see so many commentary/cringe channels picking out those works to clown on. They made it seem like thats ALL the fandom was which simply wasn't true. If you go looking for it, of course you're gonna find it! Shocking!! Of course, I might be biased- I mean look at my channel, I obviously have a soft spot for CH. The fandom has calmed down a lot recently. Right now its just full of people who wanna make good looking artworks of their favorite countries or clowns who just wanna meme and be funny. Personified countries is either something you like or you don't. Simple as that. Countryhumans (and hetalia, i see it too) are cringe af but yknow what- I still love it! Despite its flaws.. Just stay on the side you vibe with. But yeah, thanks for the fair review! Nice seeing a review from someone who isn't completely disgusted by the idea of personified countries. Truly a breath of fresh air!

Oh my god, ChefGatsby?! I didn’t expect to find such a big creator here! Hi, I’m a fan! Your works helped me see the good side of CH. Keep doing that! I agree with your points so much here. We embrace the cringe. Imo despite all the freedom CH has, it also has more hidden restrictions than most fandoms just because of what the characters are. I think the political stuff was less the issue and more immature fans not seeing that it’s not like Hetalia; the characters are inherently countries down to their core, and sus stuff becomes manyfold sus. Though there’s also kids who can’t do satire. But the fandom has pretty much gone through what the Hetalia fandom has in like half the time lol

@ChefGatsby I agree that the flags as their faces definitely make it that much harder to separate the characters from the actual countries. *EDIT:* -(Also; I’m gonna get so much flak for this; but there are few things cringier, than spelling the word: ”Cringy” as: ”Cringe”; which, even a non-native English-speaker, like myself, can tell, is exclusively either a noun or a verb; not an adjective. The adjective is: ”Cringy”.)-

A long, long time ago.. There were 2 fandoms. Countryballs, hailing from an upside down polandball. And Hetalia, hailing from Hidekaz Himaruya's fantasies. They met one day in the fandom meetings and fell deeply in love.. later on in their years Hetalia had a baby, that baby was strange.. the head of Countryballs, the body of Hetalia. Countryballs was up to the name and they named it.. Countryhumans.

Another major difference between Countryhumans and Hetalia is their intended audience. When the Hetalia manga and anime were adapted for release in the USA, for example, they were rated Older Teen and R, respectively. Hetalia, even as benign as it became, was never (NEVER!!) for middle schoolers. But middle schoolers got their hands on it anyway, and like you said, that's where a lot (but not all) of the problems came from. Meanwhile Countryhumans is a fandom without a canon and without a licensed (and rated) publication. It's on the very "Unrated and Uncut" internet. You could say it's not for middle schoolers, but good luck with that. If there's one thing that will reflect your culture back at you in the worst and most distorted ways, it's in unsupervised and immature people. Oof.

Okay, since this was made a year ago I'll just consider this as a little outdated. The fandom now these days is more focused on history and shipping stuff like Rusame and USSR x T.R will get you criticized as it is less accepted. A lot of us are still more historically accurate and don't use stereotypes as much as we used to in the past. I do mainly agree with your points, and am glad you gave a fair opinion on the Countryhuman fandom other than others just going "You humanize countries? Weird bro," and I appreciate your honesty.
@paikoateacat
@paikoateacat 9 ай бұрын
Stereotypes in general are a tricky game to play. A Russian could get offended over the 'vodka loving' stereotype while an Arab is laughing at the 'tea loving' stereotype. As long as you do your best to approach common cultural aspects of a country in a humorous way, while still avoiding harmful stereotypes that portray people of that nationality as subhuman or dumb just because something they do is different, it is very easy to make good Culturally accurate content without hurting people and instead making them laugh about a funny thing they do in their country that other people in other countries maybe don't do. Treat countryhumans as a representation of a person from the country rather than a representation of the country. That could even make some of these ships understandable. If you portray the RusAme ship as a Russian guy with an American girl (or whatever genders) rather than the actual countries, you can ignore politics and have an actually compelling story. You can even add qualities that help with the representation of the country such as America being a stronger than average person and Germany being interested in engineering. But the most important rule will always be, Do not under any circumstances represent problematic countries like the USSR and Nazi Germany under any light other than negative.
@puckkrz01

Yes… I was into CH around 5 years ago.. and it was very stereotypical. God it was genuinely so scary. Femboy Japan and America 😭😭😭 and literally like all the ships were jsut “kawaii x bad boy” 💀💀💀 I sometime see newer media of it and I’m glad they make things more historically accurate and focus on things that actually happened. There seems to be less shipping which is a W IMO. I still have some CH videos up on my channel, and as much as it haunts me I just can’t let it go.

As someone who has been in the CH fandom since 2019, I honestly think you gave the countryhumans fandom more credit than where it is due. Although it has toned down since its height, I'm really surprised that no one touches on some of the more deep-seated issues of the popularity of (purposeful) incest, bestiality, and pedophilia. I know every fandom struggles with these problems to some extent, but because of that creative freedom you mentioned, paired with young naiveite, they really do go hog wild with it. I do think that you hit the nail on the head on the political humor bit of video though, it's part of the reason I am attracted to the concept of countryhumans vs the reality of the fandom. I first watched Hetalia when I was 13 and was drawn into the characters and the snippets of history being illustrated with those characters (the American Revolution scenes is a good example). However, when I quickly realized that that was not the tonal focus of the anime and instead it was just cute anime boys doing completely unrelated hijinks, I dropped it very quickly. It's like eating cotton candy. Sweet and melts on your mouth with no effort but has little no substance behind it. That is Hetalia's strength but also, its greatest flaw, in my opinion. Hetalia is not meant to be taken seriously, and because of that, they just don't touch on any "dangerous" topics that CH grabs ahold of and does whatever its little heart desires. Countryhumans is all meat, even if it's rancid and covered in bones that will chip your teeth when taking bite. Also, despite what some people may say about how 'they don't want to get political' make no mistake: I've been around long enough to recognize that is a means of deflecting criticism from their sometimes very biased art pieces, animations, and writings. Some of these are from innocent individuals who do not really comprehend what they are drawing, and others do so maliciously or to push an agenda. It is completely similar to polandball in that regard. If there is anything positive I can say about countryhumans as a concept specifically, it is that it has really intrigued me to learn history and understand people across the world. When a russian artist makes an animation meme of (ancient) Poland and Principality of Moskow with Poland looking like a jerk stepping all over Moscow my first question is "what is going on here?" because a majority of the time, these animations are illustrating the artists' perspective on a specific historical event. Sometimes the artist provides context, other times you have to search for it on your own. But what a small joy it is to discover some tit bit of historical information that was not even given the time of day in your history class. And although a lot of these depictions of countries are layered in bias of mostly hormonal teens, they still are interesting to look at and think about, no?

I think you're forgetting that while the source content of Hetalia rarely if ever touched upon "dangerous" topics, the fandom definitely can and does. The real difference is that the Hetalia fanbase, at this point, is older on average and this helps us setting 'non-written rules' to try and limit the sharing of controversial content. And, since Hetalia has a canon source unlike CH, fans can have a lot of creative freedom in exploring what canon source barely touched upon, BUT within much clearer limits of common sense (also because Hetalia characters are Countries, yes, but they are also people with specific personalities that go beyond their 'humanized Country' aspect). You are kind of underestimating Hetalia and its fandom in that regard, Historical!Hetalia is a very vaste AU that many fans work with and most of it is built upon canon trivia and snippets. You're talking as if the Hetalia fandom isn't massive and hasn't been producing content (mostly fanarts and fanfictions) for the past 13 years ...

CountryHumans could’ve been like Countryballs where it educated people in hilarious ways much like Countryballs and Hetalia did. Politics cannot disturb his pursuit of neutrality. He must be open to everyone and analyze things by their quality, as opposed to focusing on which side made it. This is the ONLY review I've seen😅. And I agree with everything she said 😁. I haven't seen the anime or read the Manga, but I recently got into the whole Country humans thing and found it fascinating. I wasn't a fan of people glorifying the Nazis or making it a parent(it's not respectful and it makes no sense). If someone HAS to make the Nazi symbol a character then I guess you could maybe make it be 🤔.... maybe it's a piece of the Germany human that fractured off and grew into a monster that it is🤷‍♀️. It's DEFINITELY not a parent of Germany though. Germany was there before Nazi so that makes no sense. I think it's okay to mention Nazi history and all and if everything else (countries, states, organizations, etc.) is a human then Nazi flag is too I guess 😅. As long as it's handled correctly. Acknowledging history and not avoiding it is a good thing as long as the bad stuff isn't glorified (like Nazi being some caring parent or some cool badass killer. It's a killer alright, but not cool or badasses.) It's hard to handle horrible characters correctly without glorifying them, especially real world history. It's doable though, you just need to be careful.

As a countryhumans fan (and content creator) yea alot of this is true, the fandom is mostly kids who dont really get the impact certain countries have had on history, but theres still alot of people who do try to be like "hey wow thats not ok" and stay apolitical. Im not trying to defend these downright offensive depictions of past countries, im just trying to point out that most people only see the outer parts of the fandom (AKA offensive art, bad stereotypes, political things, and just generally not okay things) and say the whole fandom is like that. Countryhumans is going through a similar phase that hetalia was once going through (although its 10x as chaotic because theres no true cannon. Everybody as their own AUs, designs and thoughts about other countries that are probably influenced by where they grew up and how they were raised to think about others which still is NOT an excuse) and now that there are starting to be some mixing of fandoms and older ch fans are starting to reign in the younger ones its still pretty murky here Safe internet travels, and thank you for covering countryhumans. Even if it was mostly the icky side (which is alot of the fandom, sadly)

If you wanna stay on the meme/stereotype crazy side, have even more fun. If you wanna be toxic...that's on you. Not the fandom.

i am personally apart of 3 country related fandoms (countryhumans, hetalia and polandballs) and i have to say that they all have their ups and downs. they all are much more similar than you think. but again, i’d say each is as bad as the other in terms of negativity. for example: the hetalia fandom is a bit crazy and over steps boundaries and sometimes has nazi’s in it, the countryhuman fandom with its over abundance of ships and polandballs with the biggest amount of racism i have ever seen in any fandom. also on a side note: i think some certain ships are okay as long as it’s based on personality and compatibility rather than history but i don’t know that’s just a me thing. (side note: my personal theory of why countryhumans is so big in ships is A. they are countries so technically enemies and we know how much the internet loves enemies to lovers, B. no canon so it’s a free for all)

Note: I personally like Countryhumans a LOT less than the other two. This sucks, because it has a LOT of potential! I want to start a new Countryhuamns, called "countryhumans NOVA", to not be associated with the original fandom. Personally, I think there should be a true canon, and people that like characters as opposite genders can still enjoy it, but with female counterparts, similar to Nyo! Hetalia. It is just based on my opinion of the "offical genders", so please, keep that in mind. It would also (hopefully) fix most of the fandom's problems.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS. I actually found the Hetalia and country balls fandoms because of Countryhumans. The reason I joined was because I realized there were no limits. Before I didn't really feel attatched to any fandom because I couldn't draw anything very well. I am a very creative person with a very low self esteem so seeing all the Percy Jackson and Harry Potter fan arts and trying to draw them and failing miserably slowly pushed me away. Then I found Countryhumans and realized that all the parts I was struggling with weren't needed and it seemed normal to leave them out. At first I felt guilty for being in the fandom because of all the things about nazis, then I found the better side that said hey, want to draw something funny about France and a baguette? I started drawing Countryhumans and for the first time in years found art fun. For a while I completely ignored the shipping aspect because it made me uncomfortable but now I do some ships simply because of how stupid you can make them look. (Still no Nazi shit tho, yuck) It soon became an output for stuff I saw on the news but didn't fully understand. I remember writing a crack fix where America built the wall and then Canada built a wall and America smashed Canada's wall and Mexico murdered him while he wasn't looking. All this because I saw on the news something something trump Mexico USA something something. Countryhumans also gave me my love of history and the intricacy of politics. Before I joined the fandom I didn't know a lot of things about history, geography, and politics, mostly due to the poor education system but a significant part of it was disinterest. A few months after I joined I found myself going down a rabbit holes about how the T-34 was built and how there is still a dispute on whether the first plane flew in the USA or Brazil. I would never have actually paid attention in history class or done research on my own had it not been for Countryhumans sparking interest in these topics. There is still a lot of shit in the fandom we need to sort out but there is so much good too. That's something no one has ever mentioned. Because of the fact that I learn something new about history and politics and am pushed to do research and learn every day I can't see myself leaving the fandom anytime soon.

For me, it’s the same but with Hetalia. I found Hetalia because of my love for history (specifically the 1900’s) and already like creating personifications of things that are not people. It gave me an outlet to do this and taught me more about geography and the more hidden moments in history. I got into countryhumans and countryballs a little afterward ^^

In terms of shipping (since it's like big part of both fandoms), I think I finally got why I'm more inclined to like the ships (and other stuff, other than ships) in Hetalia, and it's because they have their own personalities outside of the stereotypes people expected to see. Them having their own names also helps. Like for an example, the ship: GerIta. The Hetalians I encounter ship them, not as the country itself, but rather as people, (Ludwig and Feliciano) based on how they interact to one another personally in the show/manga/comics and not necessarily only due to their shared history (though, it does play a factor). Take the episodes where it's almost slice of life (sprinkled with some history or facts about their culture) like them watching movies. They just look like friends showing the movies that came from their land and their reaction to it is just them being themselves. Just seeing them do some mundane things or interact with their fellow countrymen makes them more than the country they represent. They are a character, whereas countryhumans are more like a caricature of a bunch of ideas and stereotypes about a country, stuffed into a humanoid figure with little to no personality outside of it, and all of these are based on what I've seen mostly. I guess, Hetalia being a story helps, unlike Countryhumans, where it seems like from what I understand, are created by a bunch of people with differeing views, creating inconsistency in characterization and interpretation. Like, if I don't like that part of them, I can just borrow or create a new interpretation, while on Hetalia, if I remove something about the character because I don't like, it would be out of character of them. I'm not bashing on countryhumans fandom, I honestly enjoy the stuff like animations they produce. Also, I know the dark times of Hetalia, I've been there ever since the beginning, and I acknowledge that and probably (hopefully) other Hetalia veterans and newbies too. This all based from what I've encountered and observation, which means, it's leaning towards a more subject point of view ( I don't mean to offend in any way). Lastly, sorry if it's long I just don't know how to explain it properly and concisely since English is hard and not my mother tongue, and if you have read all these, thank you very much, especially for putting up with my terrible grammar/spelling etc.

While I mostly agree with you, it's important to recognize that "I don't think this is political" is itself often a political statement. Like I would definitely NOT say Hetalia was completely apolitical, despite its largely apolitical intentions. Same thing with the sentiments of "what do you mean this is offensive, this is normal". Mostly, it's going to feel "neutral" to you if it matches your own preconceptions. For example, I'm old enough to remember when it was "normal and not offensive" to insult things as stupid by calling them "gay". It's uh. worth examining. Not worth canceling people about, but definitely worth examining in oneself and one's immediate surroundings. If Mexican fans are trying to explain to you why a Zapata sombrero for Mexico (Countryhumans or Hetalia) might be in poor taste, it's good to listen.

This actually brings up a recent discussion in my Japanese class regarding Swastikas: I'm an American, I've lived in Japan, studied the language off and on, and worked for a Japanese company for many years. I'm finally buckling down and getting a degree in the language to meet visa requirements and improve my language ability. The other day, we were discussing slang, emoji's, and texting in Japan. The guest, an exchange student from Japan, started crossing her arms and going "oh yeah!" And I'm like "huh, I wonder what emoji this is supposed to be..." And then she drew a swastika on the board. As a white American with German and Jewish heritage, my checks clenched a little. But for the woman speaking, it was just another emote. Japan doesn't have the same history that we do. I'm still not sure if that makes it right to use it as an emote, but still. Certainly as a religious symbol, I think it's acceptable for Buddhism and Hinduism (I think that's the other one, apologies if I'm wrong) to use since they're who it was stolen from.

You're right. The fandom is starting to get more mature and take action against those things. It's even started to split, I think. Personally, me and my friends have humanized them further like the Hetalia fandom has, and keep world leaders and citizens separate. Bad history is also kept separate this way, as in, these characters didn't commit atrocities themselves. It's seems to be getting..healthier I guess? In the countryhumans fandom? At least with the stuff I've seen in the past few months. Hopefully.

So I just wanna thank you on how respectful you are and seeing the good in the very godless and lawless fandom. P.S. In the whole Philippines family thing Perla is a reference to "Perla ng silangang" in our national anthem, it's basically a reference to how The Spanish (and Filipinos today) called the Philippines as "Pearl of the east" because to them it was really beautiful, But I personally don't like it because it's something that the Spanish called the Philippines and not an actual figure.

My favourite country-personification thing is Scandinavia and the World. It's funny and I'd say more accurate in portrayal of european countries than Hetalia. Stuff like Nazi Germany sometimes makes an appearance but is always shown in a negative light. The designs are cute and there are female versions too (I find countryhumans really offputting). It comes with a bonus of focusing on my favourite group of countries. I've learnt quite a few trivia from it. It's essentially what I hoped for Hetalia to be. I still like Hetalia though. I appreciate it a lot for staying mostly in tasteful lines.

@@aleksisgabliks3881 Yes. Very accurate 👌🏻👍🏻. Whereas Hetalia’s Finland is mostly just (anime-ified) Savonia, stereotype-wise; for the understandable reason that Savonia is the Eastern-most part of Finland; and thus, Savonians would, naturally, be the first Finns that most Japanese people would likely come across, when visiting Finland; and, as usual, with most stereotypes, in general, the Savonian-stereotype has an element of truth. However; none of those reasons change the fact that Hetalia’s Finland does not represent the whole (or even most) of Finland.

Well, (at least, here, in Finland, in the 1990’s-2000’s,) Nazis were a popular gimmick for gay-porn, to the point that parodies and jokes of that reached even a 1000% straight male, such as myself; and, if there’s one thing that’s clear as day, it’s that Nazis and gays do *_NOT_* go together. So, it could be worse, I guess. 🫤

Thank you for talking about the CH fandom in a fair way, most people talk about the bad stuff and skip the good things. But you looked into the good in the fandom as well as the bad stuff, to show that not all of the fandom is bad. And didn't say anything to Hateful towards it. So thank you!❤️^^

The thing is that people in Eastern Europe either don't care much about political correctness or are able to look at it more lighthearted. Some are just not reall educated, just look at Russia, how people (not all! I know a lot pf Russians disagree with that actions in Ukraine and Ukraine is my country of birth) think that Ukraine is nazist (although my Russian friends and I think that the regime in Russia is fascist or fascistoid)

Creativity is Unlimited, some change history to make their AUs work out, some just ship. I was definitely one of the cringe and offensive kind of shippers. *That* side of the fandom is mostly cursed ships. Some are political, some are just humour, some are for historical accuracy and sprinkle a little twist. If you find one for you, it's fun. If you like *that* side of the fandom, stay away from me.

Everything you went over hit the nail on the head. I have been saying all these things over and over again. Your take is probably the best I’ve heard. Because CH is purely fan made, I have had a REALLY hard time pinpointing the personality of the characters, since everyone interprets them differently. They also very much cling to politics and stereotypes and pass it off as character traits which.... no. Just no. However, even though there’s no canon, there are some HILARIOUS stuff out there that had me rolling. The community I will admit is VERY creative! Lol, a lot of the time it just feels like Vine remastered. There are definitely a lot of things that need to be fixed over there, but they got the spirit.

@@cryptical1210 this is oversimplified, but after WW2 European countries moved a bunch of Jewish people to Palestine (Palestine is home to many religions and Judasim was already there; telling you this since there is a misunderstanding that it is a Muslim vs. Jewish conflict, which isn't the case at all) the Europeans tried to make a compromise to share, which Palestinians weren't to happy about. After a while of not getting along a Jewish leader declared to take control of the land and name it 'Israel' which caused a war to broke out, but thanks to England taking away our weapons, we were unable to defend ourselves and was easily lost. My family ran away from the war and became refugees, we are unable to go back to Palestine at all. If you follow the news during the past years, Israel having been kicking Palestinians out of their houses, bombing hospitals and schools, killing many people even children, banned Muslims from praying in a sacred place of worship during a holy month, and much more.

@@shipperina2213 oh man i'm SO sorry you and your family had to go through that. It really disgusts me how some people take this lighly and ship Israel with Palestine together. Even if they are little kids they should know better, because doing these things is really harmful to others. Tbh i will never understand why some people can be this level of sick to do these type of things.

This was a fantastic analysis and you summed up basically all my thoughts about Hetalia, CountryHumans, and culture clashes in fandoms. Honestly, I think CountryHumans has a lot of potential to be a great medium for sharing political opinions, but at least to me the bad outweighs the good, and overly political spaces become overwhelming to me personally. And I loved your analysis on culture clashes and how "offensive" things might not appear that way to some people. I think a lot of people these days (especially on the internet) are way to quick to be outraged at things without understanding the perspective and cultures of other people. Which is really sad because sharing culture is awesome. And I know this is a total nitpick but please hear me out: Next time, please don't automatically assume that people are going to cancel you for sharing your opinions. I know having unpopular opinions on the internet can be scary, but assuming you're automatically going to get cancelled is kind of disrespectful to your sane fans (AKA the people who actually matter), you know?

A younger person in the countryhumans fandom here, I hate shipping like bro who ships TR x USSR? I think the shipping is declining but I’m not sure. TR. A comfort character. The heck. A countryhuman show would help as it will add more like personality stuff and help remove the ships.
