32:10 speaks to me as a sugar/carb addict. The best comment I learned from Dr. Cywes was that "addicts don't get cheat days". No excuses, rationalizing, no minimizing, etc. I've since used that phrase to well-intentioned dessert pushers. It stops them cold every time, and they in turn respect my commitment. Four years in, down 76 lbs and maintaining, 67 years old.

I keep hearing people say they tried keto and it didn't work even though they say they lost weight. You can't try keto. You have to permanently change how you eat. Just like you can't treat alcoholism by not drinking for a couple months and then try to drink moderately.

I regret so much not being able to quit carbs when I was 12 and tried Atkins diet. I lost about 10 to 20 kg twice or three times and got it back. Last year being 35yo I followed a ketogenic diet for real and lost 22kg. I have IBS still and other health problems but the GI issues bother me much less than before. Still too much abdominal pain and testing other meds for IBS-C, but the keto is the best diet I ever did. Tried SCD (specific carbohydrates diet), low FODMAPs and counting calories (always hungry and yoyo weight)

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes I went to a diabetic education class. The entire class was all about reading food labels and figuring out how many carbs you are about to eat, and then use a specific formula to figure out how much insulin you have to inject before you eat. I remember sitting there thinking what bull this was! I even asked the teacher why not just not eat the carbs.. she just looked at me like I had two heads!! This was before I ever heard of the Carnivore diet! Now they claim I am Type 1 (I was 67 when they diagnosed me - I’m not sure that I am true type 1) I’m 69 now and following the Carnivore diet and now I can sometimes go a day or two without taking insulin! I do wear a continuous glucose monitor!

Thanks, you for this conversation. I have long known that a huge part of my addiction was connected to my emotional state and dealing with how I feel is all a part of my health regimen. Just a reminder on how everything is connected. Also quit drinking 2 months ago for health, weight loss, etc. I've been on and off keto and carnivore for several years, but the discipline was not there. I know it's a lifestyle, but I let my emotions control me. Now I feel more in control and ready to live this lifestyle for the rest of my life. Side note: I know of at least 4 people who did Gastric By-pass...all lost the weight, but didn't change their relationship with food, or examine why they got fat, or emotional health and ALL eventually gained the weight back within 2 years.

The carb issue is real & hard to confront esp given our 'microwave' culture & we need the help from functional practitioners. But, must say I never cease to be astounded and saddened that we'd rather listen to the 'gurus' for advice to our inner selves rather than simply opening The Good 📖 Book & "hearing" Jesus, the source of Truth given milleniums ago, from which all such steal to make their million$. Time & again, confirming the very Word! "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding" Prov 9:10

My carb addiction was a consequence of refeeding after low-calorie dieting in childhood, not the initial cause of weight gain. I wish some doctor or researcher would look into people like me and my cousin's grandkid. A family of thin people, eating identically, and one kid gets fat almost overnight0. Why? No one seems to care. For me, it's too late to fret about the answer, and all I can do is stay off carbs now to stay a normal size and lift weights to make that "slightly overweight" weight mean 23 percent body fat. But for my little cousin, I feel awful for him. Doctors are yelling at him to eat less, without looking at the reality that he eats FINE. He's seven. Doctors are so damned abusive in this way because they have that insane "calories in/out" lie rattling around in their skulls and can't even ask an interested question. WHY is that kid fat? Their approach is going to give him lifelong eating disorders. Where's the scientific curiosity about the root cause of obesity in such cases? Nowhere in the medical industry, it seems.

Emotional eating. Bingo!! After 25 years keto and 3 mos carnivore, I have to say on carnivore my desire to cheat is almost non existant compared to keto. Also easily cut way back on dairy and eliminated all sweeteners which long have been goals of mine. Biggest thing is my crazy morning gluconeogenesis is way down. Triglycerides and uric acid down. Now a true hyper responder. I believe is because I eat less fat on carnivore. My chylomicrons now empty before my liver gets them. Put some thought into my last sentence.

🎯 Key points for quick navigation: 00:00:00 *🏥 Addressing the Root Cause of Obesity* - Obesity and diabetes treatments like surgery and ketogenic diets are effective but fail to address the root cause. - Carbohydrate addiction is identified as a major underlying issue leading to obesity. - Emotional management plays a crucial role in sustainable weight loss strategies. 00:02:18 *🍽️ Surgical Approaches and Emotional Management* - Surgical interventions for obesity often neglect addressing carbohydrate addiction. - Emphasis on emotional management alongside medical and nutritional guidance. - Sustainability of weight loss strategies depends on managing emotional eating patterns. 00:05:37 *🌐 American Diabetes Association and Pharmaceutical Influence* - Critique of the American Diabetes Association's reliance on pharmaceuticals over dietary interventions. - Challenges in advocating for low-carb diets despite their proven efficacy in managing diabetes. - Type 1 diabetes complications exacerbated by insulin resistance and glycemic index management issues. 20:05 *🍎 Understanding individual carbohydrate tolerance* - Individual tolerance to carbohydrates varies significantly based on metabolic history and addictive personality traits. 21:39 *🏃‍♂️ The role of exercise in emotional management* - Exercise serves as a crucial emotional management tool for many, akin to other forms of emotional restitution like eating or meditative practices. - While not essential for weight loss directly, physical activity can provide emotional balance and aid in managing carbohydrate addiction. 23:57 *🧠 The neurobiological benefits of physical activity* - Physical activity stimulates endorphin release and supports emotional regulation through enhancing brain function, particularly the prefrontal cortex. - It serves as a form of emotional currency, replenishing mental resources needed to navigate daily challenges and stressors. 40:39 *🧠 Understanding intrinsic values and external validation* - Focus on intrinsic rewards over external validation is crucial for personal contentment. 41:21 *🛠️ Building emotional toolkits* - Developing emotional resilience involves expanding one's toolkit of coping strategies. - Helping others improve their emotional toolkit is essential for personal growth. 45:32 *🌀 Managing depression and anxiety* - Recognizing and managing emotions daily is vital for combating depression and anxiety. - Medication stabilizes but doesn't resolve underlying emotional challenges. 01:00:34 *🍵 Exogenous Ketones and MCT Oil in Ketosis* - Exogenous ketones serve as a dietary appetite suppressant and can quickly induce ketosis. - MCT oil in bulletproof coffee aids in ketosis but should be used cautiously to avoid excessive calorie intake. - Both are beneficial tools initially but should ideally be phased out as the body adapts to producing its own ketones. 01:02:12 *🧪 Metformin and Insulin Resistance* - Metformin reduces liver glucose production, making it effective against insulin resistance. - Berberine, touted for similar benefits, shows limited effectiveness compared to metformin. - Metformin can cause gastrointestinal discomfort but is generally more reliable than berberine. 01:04:31 *🥦 GLP-1 Agonists: Role in Appetite Control and Insulin Management* - GLP-1 agonists like semaglutide are potent appetite suppressants and improve insulin sensitivity. - They trigger early satiety responses and block glucagon release, aiding in blood sugar control. - These medications are used alongside dietary changes to enhance metabolic health and are effective for managing both obesity and diabetes. 01:19:51 *🚬 Lobbying and Policy Influence* - Lobbying in the US is a significant industry influencing legislation. - Former government officials often join corporations to exploit loopholes they helped create. - The influence extends to sectors like food and finance, shaping laws to benefit corporate interests. 01:21:58 *🌍 UK's Proactive Obesity Measures* - The UK took proactive measures against obesity following findings linking it to COVID-19 severity. - Despite challenges, the UK is viewed as progressive in tackling public health issues. - NHS doctors emphasize the seriousness of obesity-related health impacts seen during the pandemic. During the Spring and Summer, I would probably eat more vegetable and fruit. Fall and winter I'll eat more fat and protein. I think that's pretty close to how our ancestors lived. I figured, that if you first check your glucose, eat a measured amount of a carb, wait an hour to check your glucose level. Then again after 2 hours. That will tell you how high and for how long it stays high. Before, mine would shoot up above 180 and stay a while. Lately, after eating, it may go up to 140ish and goes away pretty quick. I suppose it takes less insulin to put glucose into my cells. Plus my cells actually have the space to let them in. At least that's how I see it in my own mind lol.

Prescribing pills reinforces peoples belief they can take a easy way. The problem is most people are mentally weak. What would the young men that were delivered to the beaches in world War two think about today's weak society?.I often wonder. Also, in my opinion a "bridge" should be temporary, not lifelong.

People need to eat to live. Not live to eat, nutrient dense whole foods there would be less obesity

The main reason keto doesn't work for most people is simply that they have never heard of it or they can't be convinced to try it. When you try it the next obstacle is your fear of fat. For most people once they're high-fat keto they're home free. There's only a small percentage that have to deal with emotional management. In my opinion.

Not a good answer on a drug, don't know what it does, but it helps. :/. Like Tylenol, don't know what it does, but it helps and has also killed a lot of people.

Stop. Salting. When you stop salting you find that your taste preferences for fat vs protein changes on a daily basis based upon the bodies needs in that moment. If you chronically eat too much fat even on a zero carb diet it will start to cause insulin resistance via intramyocellular lipid deposition. If you chronically eat too much protein it will strain your kidneys and liver due to chronically high insulin/ammonia levels. Some days I eat more fat other days I eat more protein but the ability to figure that level out accurately is only available to you when you cut out the salt which makes everything hyper palatable. My blood glucose levels continually get lower and lower while my body and mind feel better and better. No salt carnivore diet 2+ years.
