Had to do this yesterday. brushes needed replacing. Even though it's straight forward to do, it was comforting to see how it should be done. Puts the mind at ease. I always worry I might miss something. And I must say, Warco have excellent customer support. Long time fan Ade, got a WM16B Mill to be able to keep up with you. :) Keep up the good work.

Hi Ade although fixed now, sorry fiir your losses, When I decided to buy a small lathe I started off looking to see what was available then checked the forums for possible design, and common faults. The burnt out dc motor was one of the most popular faults I found in both the variable speed lathes and milling machines, so I decided to go for a geared lathe and got the HBM 250g, 2 other friends bought variable speed lathes the same week, both have had problems with the dc motors, mine touch wood is still working fine. When I bought my milling machine with this in mind I got the very same mill as you but in hbm colours that has an AC brushless motor in it, very quiet and a lot smoother than the dc motor in the lathe.

Hi, just found your channel and watched the batch brass nuts, good ideas there with the jig. I have the Warco 280V with the WM16 milling head as an attachment to the lathe, sort of lathe and mill all in one, which gives me a two axis power fed table. I also added a hand wheel to the end of the lead screw which gives me much finer lateral feed that the traverse handle can (I find it very difficult to set my compound dead true to the axis of the spindle due to it's design). Re. the kettle failure, etc., I lived just north of Cardigan for many years and had similar problems, so were my neighbours. I measured the mains voltage with a good quality meter and found it to be around 260v, which is over the tolerance limit for the UK mains supply of 230v +-10%. I called in Western Power Distribution who installed their own sealed recorder that agreed with my findings. They then replaced the local transformer on the pole near my house which brought the voltage within specification, no more problems after that. Just a thought.

ADD A COOLING FAN I burnt the 1100w motor out in my Warco WM18 milling machine for the second time. First time I burnt it out I was able to repair the damage, second time it was terminal. Unable to get a replacement without a long wait I replaced it with a more powerful ( 220/240 dc 1800w 8 amp 2.5 hp) motor that came out of a powered treadmill ( lots of these on ebay). It took a bit of modification to get it to fit, but it was worth the effort. I also added a bathroom extractor fan as a cooling fan which I set up to run continually whenever the machine is used. The fan blows through the top of the motor and exits through a ventilated motor mount that was part of the modification. The power supply of the machine seems to cope with the upgrade without issue. Adding the cooling fan would probably have prevented the burn out in the first place. Hope this is of help.

I’m sorry to see you are having problems with your motor, unfortunately these motors are notorious for failing, I have a mill that has the same motor to date I have gone through x3 the mill is used very little and is just over 3 years old now the first motor failed after only 4 months of light use.
@stephencutajar25486 жыл бұрын
Similar lathes that have the option of the 750w AC brushless motors also have a variable frequency drive controller so these will not work with your existing speed control. DC motor controllers vary the voltage while AC brushless controllers vary the frequency.

Hi ade me again. My warco wm180 motor has packed up. Overheated I think. have you done any modifications to prevent yours going again ?
@hopefuldave5 жыл бұрын
A good move is adding an external fan on the motor blowing into the brush end - a PC fan or similar can be run from a "wall wart" plug-in supply, it will keep some airflow through the motor and reduce overheating at low speeds when the internal fan hardly moves any air, the shorting motor often kills the speed control board as it goes over-current - another Good Thing is a fuse between e.g. A+ on the control board and the motor (probably have to go between the board and the F/off/R rotary switch.
@jamesbennet39372 жыл бұрын
The problem is turning at low speed. The motor relies on a part inside turning to keep it cool, like a fan. This turns at the speed the motor is turning at. So at low speed it gets hot. It could do with a separate fan.

I've just been through this with my 180. Unfortunately it took out the PCB as well. In my case it was Delrin swarf that got into the motor and I've found out how! If you feel under the back of the ways behind the chuck you'll find there's a gap that goes clear through to where the motor is housed. I'd been tuning some very fine cuts in Delrin and the swarf had dropped through to the motor and got sucked in by the motor fan. Warco were very quick with replacements but the machine is well out of warranty so I had to cough up. Needless to say, that gap has been filled in! I notice your rear splash guard is different to mine so perhaps this problem has been addressed? As regards the motor getting hot; yes it does. I'm thinking of installing a small fan.
@ade63dug4 жыл бұрын
Yes . i moved the rear swarf tray back a long way and it was fitted closely . no problems since thankfully . if the motor go'es again it will be VFD time . it think this would be a massive improvement to the lathe and especially low end torque . Cheers Ade.

Hello Ade, I have one of these wm180 lathes and I'm a fan of your channel. Did you find out any more about a brushless conversion? I had this exact thing happen to me last week motor just burned out. Warco say they won't have a replacement motor in stock to give me for several weeks. I suspect a brushless motor will want its own driver and speed controller that's why I'm hesitant to go into that without knowing whats involved. Thanks also the back of the motor on mine didnt just come off. I removed the brushes and the 2 long retaining screws but it remained attached to the shaft via a bearing fit I'm guessing. I didnt get to fully inspect the motor to see if it was salvageable but I blew compressed air inside and put it back together with new brushes and it still won't run...
@ade63dug3 жыл бұрын
Hi Thomas . It seems a long time ago that it happened to me now. I have had no issues since fitting the direct replacement motor , however, If mine were to go again I would probably go with a 1hp 3phase motor and an inverter. You are correct that the brushless type uses a different driver. Hope this helps. Cheers Ade.

Sorry to hear about your motor set back. I seem to recall you mentioned somewhere that you had trouble using steel cutting tool inserts & had to use inserts for aluminium to cut steel better. What problems did the experience with the steel inserts, was it something like flex/movement in the lathe due to more contact pressure required on the tool against the work piece with a steel type insert. I have found on some smaller lathes that the more positive angle on the aluminium tool works better on steel stock.
@ade63dug7 жыл бұрын
it was only with en8 but yes the more positive angle reduces the tip load , good service from warco did surprise me but no cost repair is always good ,

To make things a bit easier on these smaller lathes when parting off, invert the parting tool & run the lathe in reverse. You have to raise the tool up quite a bit to get the tool on the centre of the stock, this method works very well with much reduced chatter & stalling. The normal way of parting pulls the tool into the work piece causing chatter & stalling, running with the inverted tool & in reverse is actually pushing the tool away from the work piece & reduces chatter. You can also get away with parting off at higher speeds with this method.
