Variety is the Most Important Element in Your Abstract Painting / An easy way I’ve created for creating variety in my abstract paintings is “thinking in three’s.” Large, medium, and small shapes. Dark, medium, and light values. Brushes, palette knife, and trowel.
Variety not only keeps the viewer engaged, which is what we all want, but it gives the work personality.
I don’t totally forget about all the other important elements when I’m creating abstract paintings, but with every brushstroke, every shape, every line, and every color, my main concern is thinking of creating differences.
