If it's small enough to get swallowed whole, then it gets to dissolve in stomach acid while alive, which arguably is at least as bad as getting salted and cooked alive. I understand why you would say that but the fact is: shellfish like abalone, clams, and mussels along with small crustaceans like crawfish must be cooked alive. There’s a phrase in the gulf south of the US (especially Louisiana): If you boil a hundred clams and a few were already dead prior to being cooked ruins the whole dish. Look it up if you guys don’t believe me. I’m just telling you this from a culinary student / home cook’s perspective.

Ladies and gents, it's pretty common in Asia, especially East Asia, to cook seafood alive to show customers how fresh the food is. Seafood starts decaying (+ smelly) as soon as it's dead. People like to see that their food is as fresh as possible. Chill. If you don't like to see seafood being cooked when alive, just move on and go on to the rest of your days. Thanks
