2:45 When in automotive class years ago, I was told that assembly lube or oil, NOT grease is a must. The idea was that assembly lube would dissolve in engine oil more quickly and completely after oil reached the parts. Grease, although dissolved by engine oil, was not specially designed for that purpose. I knew a lot of guys who would use heavy STP oil booster instead of assembly lube or grease. I guess it gives some of the advantages of engine oil and some of the advantages of light assembly lube.

Hey adept , you should make a video about Re using old pistons if they meet specs or should we simply replace all pistons and spend another $1500. Cause thats where I am at this point. My pistons dont have alot of carbon on them and I thought I could maybe re use them and clean them up and put new rings in them. Cause Cat wants $17,000 up front for a platinum kit and ive already bought new pump , new cooler, new water pump, new air compressor in these last 3 months before i stopped my truck. So I bought all new Rod bearings and mains, head gasket, reman head , new sleeves, but I dont know if I should re use piston heads cause they look really good. Figure I save a few hundred bucks. So far Ive spent Less than $6000 on a tight budget.

I've reused pistons but only after going over them with a fine tooth comb. Checking for bent rods, replacing fudging pins, inspect ring grooves etc.

Would you be concerned about the oil supply galleys in the crank being blocked by the grease on initial start up ?
@familytraditiontransportat79517 жыл бұрын
0BMM1 the oil pressure will move the assembly grease. It really isn't very thick, not like axle grease or anything. 60 to 70 psi oil pressure will move a good bit...
@TheRebelOne.7 жыл бұрын
Family Tradition Transportation Thankyou. 👍
@AdeptApe7 жыл бұрын
+0BMM1 As Family Tradition rightly started, the grease is a very light grease and will get pushed out by the incoming oil and then dissolve in the oil as it heats up.

Also, I have a couple of questions such as what do you think of fuel additives for winter driving (Howes lubricant in particular) and variable speed turbos (have one on my 14L Detroit which I know isn't your specialty). I also watched your video on pre filling your fuel and oil filters and I was told to use Howes lubricant on the fuel filter when I am on the road and need to change my filter, is there any harm in running straight additive through the injector?

Excellent.I learn a tremendous amount watching your videos.I have a question.Since Detroit diesel is partnered with Freightliner/Western Star and Volvo and International diesel make their own engines for their own trucks.Does Paccar manufacture engines for their own trucks(Peterbilt/Kenworth)?Can Petes/Kenworth also be ordered with a Cummins.Since Paccar Big rig trucks are the only trucks with a choice of engines.Caterpillar no longer manufactures a heavy truck engine,and since Cummins is an independent.Are'nt these engines only in Paccar products,(Kenworth/Peterbilt? Thanks!

Hi A.A. Strictly speaking, this is not a mechanic issue question. But, you probably can answer it anyway based on your experience and education. This has bugged me for years and I wonder if not lots of others, too. Here is a link to the two Cummins (Dare I mention another brand?) graphs that are the basis of my question: cumminsengines.com/x15-performance?#torquehorsepowercurves Cummins just came out with a new heavy truck engine called the X15 and the performance charts are in the above link. What I don’t understand is this: The engine torque is a constant at 2050 ft. lbs. from 1150 RPM - 1500 RPM. But during that same RPM range the H.P. increases from 485 to about 585. It would seem logical to me that if you have 100 more HP turning the crankshaft at the higher RPM, that more torque would result.! Can you please explain this conundrum? Thank you very much in advance if you have time and inclination to take a shot at this.
@AdeptApe7 жыл бұрын
+Frank Swain Torque is a component of horsepower, but so is RPM. If you multiply the torque and RPM and then divide by 5252 you will get the horsepower. So if you have the same torque, but RPMs increase your horsepower will increase. That is how small engines can make horsepower, but not very much torque.

Because a rod bearing fails or lasts when there is 1 gallon of diesel in the oil system and because the operator does not warn you that that type of problem is happening inside the engine does not turn off and also does not send a warning light to the driver? and ecm not have any code for low oil pressure
