I was an extra on Midway and let me say the set was impressive. The inside was actually in another studio seperated from the outside part. They used the same room for the mess hall and the room with all the beds. The amount of details was so impressive to me, like all the papers were very detailed and little things that wouldn't even show on screen. It was a really great experience!

(Pres.) Eisenhower claimed he wouldn't save it because of the Federal budget, but *I* think he was jealous of the attention to the *Pacific* war. There was indeed an attempt to raise funds, and I think the old 1:600 Aurora Models plastic kit of Enterprise had some of its purchase money donated to that fund, but it wasn't enough. I think there was also an ultimatum to the Navy that it had to choose between preserving an old carrier or building new angled-flight-deck-from-scratch - Forrestal and Saratoga - carriers. The Missouri makes its point, being the latest WW2 battleship and the site of the signing of the surrender, but it was aircraft carriers that won the Pacific war. As Boomer - children of the WW2 generation - I am still bitter Enterprise wasn't saved. It could probably be 3D-printed from plans now. :-)

I took my younger, Norwegian-American children to see this, over here in Norway, and the theater had the rock-and-roll seats, so the seat tilted you down a little in the dives, and when the plane was oscillating, you were. Fortunately, my daughter pointed out the OFF switch for the water spray. :-) There are some mistakes in the film. The only planes from Midway shown are the 2-engine B-26s. Lots of them depicted carrying bombs, but there were only 4 of them, and they carried torpedoes, uselessly. Our fighters and the innovation of our Thach Weave beam-(counter-)attack tactic was left out. Actually, there were B-17 heavy bombers (which hit nothing, being at high altitude) and inexperienced Marine divebomber pilots who took heavy losses for no hits. Then there was the massacre of our Wildcat and useless Brewster Buffalo fighters over Midway. The B-26 scene should be redone, and maybe the others could be added, since CGI is relatively easy to edit. Admiral Fletcher was technically in tactical command, but he was left out of the film. The other Midway film to come out in 2014, Dauntless, is an excellent complement in its perspective of a Dauntless pilot and gunner and a PBY flying boat crew. Patrick Wilson as Lt. Cdr Layton - "Washington is WRONG." - and Mandy Moore as Dick Best's wife ... and the look on her daughter the little girl's face at Pearl Harbor ... were excellent. And Dennis Quaid's "Bull" Halsey was unforgettable too.

I am a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Photographer's Mate and had the privilege of shooting part of the film "Hooks Down - Wheels Down" kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3qZiX15es5gfbc in which I was lucky enough to meet and interview some of the key players of the Midway Battle including: Elliot Buckmaster who was the Skipper of USS Yorktown and Jimmy Thatch, originator of the Thatch Weave among others. I have been a student of the Coral Sea to Midway timeframe in the Pacific War ever since. I have a "What if?" question regarding Midway. What would have happened if Bull Halsey had not developed the skin condition which removed him from command. Halsey, had determined that he would not use the Douglas TBD Devastator torpedo bomber in future actions since the planes were not up to par and the Mk.13 torpedoes were crap (This according to Dusty Kleitz's autobiography, "Don't Call Me A Hero"). Well with the assignment of new force commanders. Halsey's determination not to use the TBD was either overlooked or determined not to be valid. The torpedo squadrons attacking the three Japanese carriers were totally wiped out in the first action of U.S. Navy carrier aircraft. Not a torpedo exploded against a Japanese ship. However, the sacrifice of the torpedo squadrons was not in vain! The Japanese combat air patrol Zero aircraft were all at lower levels defending the task force against the torpedo bombers giving the SBD Dauntless squadrons a free run at the first three Japanese carriers sunk. WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THERE HAD BEEN NO TORPEDO PLANES TO LURE THE ZEROS TO A LOWER ALTITUDE?

The one thing that I regret regarding my Navy Career was that I had a chance to be an extra in the first "Midway" film. They were filming some footage for "Midway" aboard my ship, USS Constellation. I was asked to be an extra in the filming since I was a Chief Petty Officer and my uniform was almost identical to that worn by many Navy chief petty officers during WW-II... At the time I was asked to be an extra, the Navy allowed enlisted men to wear beards. I was very proud of my beard and would have needed to shave it off to appear in the film. " No. Not everybody. I'm sorry but I was raised by the WW2 Generation and became a Vietnam Vet. More and more over the last few decades people, especially far to many of our young people, have become spoiled; ensnared in fantasy worlds and fooled into believing that the realities and responsibilities of life and living are just an annoyance. Far to many do not know the difference between what is superficial and fleeting verses what is real and enduring. History is not found on movie screens nor in video games.

That was actually, the reason for Japan attacking Pearl Harbor - and the Dutch East Indies before that. They were beginning to see themselves as a world power and needed the oil. Interestingly enough, they had studied the US designs for Battleships and heavy guns and developed their own off the US.
@tomhanna85084 жыл бұрын
Bogdan Szczurek The problem is that actions have consequences. If you don’t understand what motivates a potential enemy and then take action which, from the enemy’s point of view, is an unacceptable threat then you have to expect some push back. The USA embargoed the sale of oil to Japan and didn’t expect a violent reaction? I think his wording was poor but his point that there are two sides to every argument is entirely valid.
