The wages of sin is death! whether it is outright or a little at a time. As a barber aka. a cheap psychiatrist just like the Bartender, I can tell you that these young men coming back from war was painful, And one day a young man that i knew before and after his time in Afghanistan came to me with this same story, his answer was to return to Afghanistan with the 75th He presented me and my shop with a battle flag, and said Tee this is one of four i took from the battlefield and i want you to have this one it is displayed high upon a shelf behind my chair, Another heartbroken Hero. I haven't seen him since, I hope and pray that all his wounds are healed.

I remember when this song came out...and the video, I love Alison Krauss and Brad Paisley, they are such gifted singers and musicians... Ricky Schroder is the actor in the video and I believe he also directed the video. He was a child actor and then he played on the Epic miniseries Lonesome Dove...a great actor. I honestly believe that this is the saddest song I've ever heard, tears me up everytime I listen to it or watch it. I can't imagine how you must be feeling seeing it and hearing it for the first time. It really takes a lot out of you, it's just heart-wrenching.

The video was produced from the memory of a story the producer knew from his home town about a WW2 soldier who came home to find his wife was sleeping around, left her became a alcoholic and died a couple of years later (PTSD also probably played a part but wasn't really diagnosed back then) when the producer heard the song it reminded him of the story from his hometown. He used it as an inspiration for the video.

As a young man, I took up with a married woman. They were separated but, I knew better. Was raised better.... It didn't go on long but the damage was done. Years later, I married and low and behold, the same thing happens to me. Don't ever think that God isn't watching and won't repay. Sin is a vicious task master. It RUINS lives. Not just our own. I know that I deserve to go to hell. But one night, God convicted me of my sin. It was brutal. Everything I ever did ran through my mind. The stench of my life making me sick to my stomach. The weight of it... I got on my face and asked God to forgive me. His Grace is greater than our sin! Jesus is Lord. He's the only way that we don't get what we deserve.

Unknowingly the reviewer gave this song the highest rating any country song can have, by practically ignoring the performance. When a country song is played flawlessly, the listener becomes so lost in the storyline, the performer(s) disappear and you literally live and believe the story that is being told. Alison Kraus has the most beautiful haunting voice in country/bluegrass music; just incredible.

This song is very hard for me to hear. Many years ago I made a horrible decision. Its been 32 years now,,and my wife stayed with me,which I didn't,and still don't deserve, but she saved our marriage. It took many many years to gain her trust back, and I will never have it back completely. So,please, think long and hard before making bad choices. And I get to carry that silent quilt with me,,every day, till I die.Though time has put it way behind us and we don't talk about it anymore,it is truly a life sentence.I literally thank God for her, every day.

You are right! Sadly some people have no control but it can go both ways! The Military person can also cheat while away! Or worse things can happen! Oh and the soldier was played by Rick Schroder who was a child star in the tv show “Silver Spoons” and was in many movies back then! Alfonso Ribeiro (played Carlton on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) was also in Silver Spoons and played Rick’s best friend. Rick Schroder played Dolly Parton’s father in a made for TV movie about her childhood! Rick Schroder also directed this video and that’s his little girl at the end!
