What makes this song so special is the combined magic of the organist Dan Federici and Clarence Clemmons on the Saxophone both of whom passed away (RIP). Also Bruce did originally write The Fever for Southsidr Johnny.

Unbelievable bluesy, jazz groove to this song. Vocals were spot on too. Clarence’s solo was icing on the cake. Love this song.

You would love Springsteens song "New York City Serenade". Little known wonderful song. As a child of the 70s and growing up in the Philadelphia area I saw Springsteen often. 4x. Each live show was no less than 3 hours. He left it all on stage. Great shows.

Quite possibly my favorite Bruce song, and I know them all (and yeah, it probably depends on when I'm asked)...I've been fortunate to see him live over a dozen times beginning in 1977, but in 2 of those shows, he performed New York City Serenade so damn beautifully! Thought it was one of those tunes that only I felt was special, but the reaction from the fans indicated otherwise. One of my most memorable concert experiences!

As a Jersey guy I have had an occasional or three to see and meet Bruce. I've seen him at the Stone Pony, in Asbury Park, a couple of times. I've been buy his home in Rumson, NJ even letting him out of his driveway as traffic was backed up. While in the Marine Corps stationed in NJ in the late eighties arrangements were made for him and the band to rehearse for his "Tunnel of Love" tour in 1987. For 3 or 4 months, in the afternoon, they would rehearse till late in the evening. I was also involved in helping break down the set and load out equipment after their final rehearsal as they headed out on the road. He's a really down to earth and nice guy.

"The Fever" was recorded in a special session at 914 Sound Studios, Blauvelt, New York on Wednesday, May 16, 1973, in just one take. The musicians were Bruce Springsteen, Danny Federici, Garry Tallent, Clarence Clemons, and Vini Lopez. No additional work for this day was notated in studio logs, nor was any during the recording sessions for Springsteen's second album The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle, or any future recording sessions since. It was not included in any of the proposed album sequence lists or included on the album. It is believed the earliest known live performance was during a March 1973 residency at Oliver's in Boston, MA, though rumors of 1972 performances exist. No recordings from this era exist, so this remains unconfirmed. After May 1973, there is no record of it being played for the rest of the year. It was used as a demo by manager Mike Appel's Laurel Canyon publishing arm and legally registered as "Fever for the Girl". In early 1974, Mike Appel, without permission and contrary to the wishes of Columbia Records, sent cassette tapes of “The Fever” to several US progressive rock radio stations, including DJs like Ed Sciaky in Philadelphia, and Kid Leo in Cleveland, all extremely pro-Springsteen, and the immediately began playing it regularly. "The Fever" had no record sales, no jukebox action, but its radio airplay numbers were through the roof. It became a hit in places like Houston, Phoenix and Boston. In Philadelphia, according to a listener, “the song exploded!” WMMR put it in their regular rotation, and it led the station in phone-in requests. However, no place was as big as Houston, Texas, thanks to several March 1974 Liberty Hall shows, and two radio broadcasts. After a successful interview by KLOL-FM's Ed Beauchamp on March 8, Springsteen was invited back the next day with the E Street Band, for a lengthy afternoon radio performance that included highlights from his first two albums, plus a rendition of "The Fever" (first time he played it in a year). That night at Liberty Hall, after a fan yelled "The Fever!", Bruce responded with, "it's a weird thing 'The Fever'… that song 'Fever' we did as a demo tape about a year ago… I promise if we'll come back, we'll work it up for you." At the late show the next day, Springsteen introduced the song by saying: "We're gonna try something now, this is something… this is a song we haven't done in about a year, but we found out that they sent a demo down here…we're gonna give it a try for you, hope we'll remember… you know but I'm gonna send this to the boys out here…uh… David Sancious later said he had been under the impression it was an old Sam Cooke classic !

I was at that show...A couple of friends and I were out looking for some live music so we went to Liberty Hall....The guy at the door said $5 to get in...we said "WHAT???.....That's more than 10 beers!!....Who is this guy, never heard of him" The doorman said he was really good and if we didn't like him he'd give us our money back......We didn't ask for our money back

I love this early song of Bruce's. The intro with the organ just pulls you back to the 70's and holds it's own throughout. His voice is so captivating, the lyrics and of course Clarence working his magic. Absolutely a winner. Glad you were groovin' Harri. Great reaction. Thanks Harri and Uncle Phil. Got to check my temperature. Lol. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

One of his sultry songs, I love it! I have this CD. And how about the Big Man on that sax??!! Clarence Clemons is my fave rock sax player. "I'm On Fire" is another sultry one by Bruce but one that you would really love is what I consider his masterpiece, "Jungleland".

I loved the jazz overtones of that period. When the drums went from Vini Lopez to Max Weinberg, the E Street band was truly formed as a rock outfit and legend followed.

You've made hardcore Springsteen fans very happy with this reaction! And you're right - it's not a typical sound for Springsteen (which is why it never made its way onto a studio album despite being an amazing track). Southside's version feels a bit different because of the way the horns build up the sound. This is more sparse - it has a more laid back and lonesome feel.

I am a big Boss fan, thank you so much for this reaction! Definitely a great track. His lyrics are stories; a beginning, building to the middle, then a resolution of sorts. "Rosalita" is a toe-tapping sing-along favorite, sort of a "day in the life" story. Give it a listen if you haven't already. Love your channel!

Southside Johnny recorded and released the song (written by Bruce), and plays it live fairly often. Bruce didn't release his version til much later. Bruce didn't want to release it on his '70s albums - if you listen to them they tend to have songs with more substantive lyrics so that may have been why he didn't want to put it on a record when he first wrote it. Southside tends to play the song a little faster which is fine, but for me this is a song that benefits from really being given space to sprawl. Bruce was at the hight of his powers as a live act in 1978 and my favorite versions of the song are his live performances from that era.

Live versions of this song are MUCH better- especially from the 1978 tour. I recommend the Houston live video or San Fransisco live audio. Hard to believe but he waited 22 years between writing/ recording it and finally putting it out on a record that people could purchase. With Because the Night (which is also much better live from 1978) he waited only 9 years.
