I love The Smithereens! They were real rockers with great lyrics, fantastic musicianship, and an incredible lead singer. I never got the general love for Bon Jovi, They seem so lightweight to me, but I got it completely for The Smithereens.

Amazing band from New Jersey that came out in the 80s but their heart is in the British Invasion and 60s & 70s rock with an edge. They were as good live as on record and produced tons of great songs. Try Everything I Have is Blue, a true banger. I saw them several times and they always came to play and rock out. I saw Jim Babjak, the lead guitarist, jump into the crowd right next to me, he blazed away in the audience for a good 5 minutes before being helped back on stage. We also saw them hold court at the merchandise table a couple times, talking about music, joking with their fans and everyone living their best life in that moment. Great band, please do more, you will have a bunch to try. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

One of the great true garage bands. RIP Pat DiNizio, a well respected vocalist much beyond their fairly minimal commercial success. He has a great cameo on the Pixies song La La Love you, “All I’m saying, pretty baby/la la love you, don’t mean maybe.”

Seriously? 🤔😮 I thought that was the drummer of the Pixies, Dave Lovering, singing that song. I'm going to say you're wrong, unless Pat just had sung that line once and the rest of the time Dave sang it.

Sweet! "Blood and Roses" takes me back to my first year of college. The instrumentation in the bridge elevates the song -- "I want to love but it comes out wrong..." This song got a big assist in the charts back then when it was used on the TV show Miami Vice. Listening along just now, the songs sounds more like something from 1979 than 1986.

Memorable mid-80's banger that you don't hear much anymore, unfortunately. Always loved that killer bass line, especially on the break before the guitar solo. This track came out at a time when there was a lot of synth-driven stuff on the charts, so for those of us who were guitar-lovers things like this were a breath of fresh air! Another tune of theirs that comes immediately to mind is "Only A Memory."

I cannot believe I missed your introduction to The Smithereens. Pure, raw, Rick and Roll!! I’ve been a fan since ‘87 and they have in the past few years moved into my top 10. RIP to Pat DiNizio, who had one of the most perfect rock voices and who wrote a huge catalog of top-level songs. They are woefully under recognized.

Dave - Thanks, brother. I appreciate your kind words! Going forward with it, I knew it wouldn't get the views and likes it merits IMO. That said, it's all about sharing good music and getting a desired response from Harri. His reaction was great and I knew he would dig the bass line. 😉

@@pncombies I don't know anyone in this community who hasn't experienced what you have described. It is all part of the sharing and commenting upon the tunes played and reviewed. Harri and I liked it, and you have 57 positive comments at the moment. My advice is to take into consideration a few factors. The first is if you like a performance and it has meaning to you, go for it. You might want to consider how many views the song has had. If the number is high, then that's a pretty good indication that it is well-liked by many people. I have found myself pondering whether a performance will be added to my Harri Maybe Playlist as I listen/watch performances throughout the month. As for me, at age 70, my main goal is to turn people on to some great performances, especially if I have seen them in concert. Sharing and enjoying the nightly installments and reading and writing comments if you are so inclined. Most of all, know that you are appreciated, my friend.

This was from their debut album "Especially for you". Most of the songs, including this one, had been staples of the group's live shows for up to 5 years prior to the release, so they were most certainly not influenced by Bon Jovi. They are basically a brit rock/rockabilly/surf rock/alternative rock band, with similar influences to Cheap Trick. "Blood and Roses" was one of five songs they recorded in 1985, in only one evening, as self financed demos they hoped would get them a record contract. The song was written by lead singer Pat DiNuzio (including the famous base line), who was a fan of legendary japanese author Yukio Mishima, and took the title from a Mishima short story. DiNunzio stated that the song was a reflection on a girl he knew in high school who had committed suicide. After being turned down by nearly every record company, they finally managed to secure a deal with small indie label Enigma, with the rest of the album produced by Don Dixon who at the time had become well known for his production of REM's early albums. Considering the small budget, the album did surprisingly well, and generated 2 minor hits including "Blood and Roses". Smithereens went on to record some other successful albums and enjoyed some alternative/college radio hits, but the debut is still one of my all time favorite records. It's also fairly well known that Kurt Cobain loved it too, and according to Dave Grohl played it frequently as the band drove their van to shows as they toured clubs in the days before Nevermind.

My daughter was the frontperson for the School of Rock Houseband in NJ. They were tight at age 15-16. She played rhythm/lead/bass and sang. They get a call out of the blue from a local college asking them to open up for The Smithereens!!! As a lifelong New Jerseyan, I was thrilled as I’d loved the band since I was a teen! It was a great night and they truly pulled it off! They got to hang with the band and met with them after the show as well. Pat D. was extremely kind and supportive. It was a terrific experience!

The Smithereens are a GREAT band! The original lead vocalist was fantastic, but sadly Pat DiNizio died in 2017. The Smithereens recorded two albums of Beatle covers and a cover of The Who's "Tommy"". while also giving nods to other rock legends in their own great lyrics - "Well she held a bass guitar and she was playing in a band And she stood just like Bill Wyman now I am her biggest fan" - Behind the Wall of Sleep, reference to The Rolling Stones long time bassist. Harri I am following you because I like your honest and thoughtful reactions, but also because you react to these GEMS and not the latest songs everyone else is reacting to!

Harry , thank you for playing The Smithereens on your fine show, They have been together now for 40+ yrs. & I’ve been a fan since the beginning. They still tour with guest vocalists Since losing Pat DiNinzio in 2017( R.I.P.)Singer / Songwriter extraordinaire . I don’t know if this will change your evaluation of this song , but you misquoted the lyrics before the chorus .. I want to live , but I don’t belong.. not want to leave. Also the only thing in common “The Smithereens “ have with Bon Joviis they are both from the state of New Jersey!.. thanks again & please play more of this vastly underated Band!
