From Paul's 1972 album "Wild Life" , Paul and Linda wrote this protest song after Bloody Sunday where 13 protesters were shot dead in Northern Ireland. Paul had stated he didn't want his army going around killing his Irish brothers. The song was censored by the BBC. The B side is an instrumental of the A side. Great lyrics, with Paul's wonderful vocals and a fabulous tune to tap along to. Great reaction to our favorite, Harri. Thanks Harri and Debbie. 👏 👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

That's pretty cool that you still have the record. I was born in 75 and my mom had a lot of Beatle's records,but never heard this song. Unfortunately she sold all her records several years ago. I think vinyl is the best!

Was written in response to Bloody Sunday, in which 13 Irish protesters were killed by British Soldiers. Lennon did the same (release a song in response to Bloody Sunday).

Mccartney is or was a Catholic, with many Irish roots. George was born catholic too. A story of we and not I, in his songs, a story to be forgiven too. Grande Paul for ever the Best !!!

John also does an excellent Irish National song called “The Luck of the Irish”, MUCH better than Paul’s song! IMHO 🇨🇦 “Why did paul McCartney write give Ireland back to the Irish? The following day, McCartney wrote the song "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" in response to the news that British troops in Derry in Northern Ireland had just shot dead thirteen civil rights marchers, who represented the Catholic minority, and wounded many others during a protest march.”

The tune is great, I love the scratchy, rebellious voice. I express great respect to all those who dare to speak publicly. Where is the reaction of today's artists to the needless suffering and cruel acts inflicted on the civilian population?

McCartney's track was an off-the-cuff reaction to Bloody Sunday, written and recorded within two days of the event in 1972. It's rough and ready but has energy and pointed, realistic lyrics, empathising with a man in an Irish prison "who looks like me" and asking: Tell me how would you like it If on your way to work You were stopped by Irish soliders? Would you lie down, do nothing Would you give in, or go berserk? Lennon's 'Luck Of The Irish', in contrast, apart from a sharp and witty chorus, is filled with corny mock-Irish folk tropes about "death and glory", the "poets of auld Eireland", shamrocks, leprechauns and the Blarney stone. Please! (Actually that was written a year before Bloody Sunday. Lennon's 'Bloody Sunday', his own response - 4 months after McCartney's - has some equally risible stuff about "martyrs", "a people proud and free", the "Emerald Isle" and a racial slur against "Anglo pigs and scotties".)

This was banned by the bbc but it did really well and got into the British charts but in the chart rundown, they wouldn’t say the name, they just said “ at number 16 is a song by Paul McCartney and wings” it was hysterical. The b side, hi hi hi was also banned due to its sex and drug references.
@braudabo

The chronology was: McCartney was upset about the single's ban and released as next the silly, but before the "Ireland-track produced "Mary Had a Little Lamb". After that, "Hi, hi, hi" came out as an A-side, with which McCartney got himself another ban from the prudish BBC...

You're the only one who chooses this song, but I think it's great, totally forgot the single I bought, his answer to "Give Peace A Chance" or to show Lennon that he .... ; did he host a bed-in with Linda in Ireland? As a counterpart and to calm his dear fans, he later released the European mega hit Mull Of Kintyre. I love his live album Wings Over America. Long live Paul and of course Ringo; RIP the great George and John! Do John Lennon's The Luck Of The Irish as Melanie (great thanks) wrote, now I remember from the newspaper album Some Time in NYC✌❤✌

I strongly prefer John Lennon’s take on the same historical event-tragedy. Something about Lennon’s angst, the searing lyrics, the marching-drum beat, and hard driven guitars make the point quite well. And he sounds like himself. I agree that Paul does not, seems too happy and lilting for the seriousness of the topic IMO. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGamn36bZc6EmMU
