You mention Kerberos only has 3 attributes, but can't you utilize additional claims with Kerberos using [KDC support for claims, compound authentication and Kerberos armoring] in group policy? Won't this essentially let you utilize Kerberos just like claims-based AD FS?

ADFS is only required if you want to federate your Office 365 Domain and you want authentication to be performed from on-premise.
