Just wanted you to know that a search for Megazeux led me here, I watched this and subscribed to your channel. I look forward to watching the other ADG videos as well as the future ones you make! As a side note, this video is also making me think of getting Megazeux again and seeing what nifty games have been made for it since the early to mid 2000's (which was around the last time I used it)

I had sooo much fun making my own worlds in Megazeux! Lots of great memories I won't forget. Thanks for doing an episode on it!

Truth be told that never actually went away, you just have to find people with that same old-school spirit :D

I am a full time software engineer and I have Megazeux to thank for that. I didn't release any games for it (my MZX files kept corrupting) , but it inspired me to learn more about programming.

+Stewart Fullerton For sure. I more-so meant in the video that focussing on MegaZeux kinda stops you from focussing on things that are more liable to get you somewhere in terms of a career, making money, etc., but it can absolutely serve as inspiration towards those goals! :B

Thanks for the great review! I just wanted to point out that MegaZeux has long since been made free open source software. Because of this, native ports have been made available for many different systems--no need fussing with a DOS emulator. As of writing this there are binaries on the website available for download for 32 & 64 bit versions of Windows and Ubuntu Linux, OS X, and of course MS DOS.

This reminds me a lot of Scratch. It can really help you learn the basics of how programs are constructed, and is a great first step for kids interested in coding.

Actually since mzx versions 2.60 to 2.84 you have an executable that's called mzxrun which is basically what it sounds like: The "engine" part of mzx without the editor.

MegaZeux...I never kne you'd do MZX! I remember how I ued to make games in the Windows version 2.84 or something...I need to go back to it but Robotic scripting is different than GML...a bit!

@@soundspark Yeah, I feel it kind of hurts the character of MegaZeux, considering what it's known for, but it's still impressive.

I'd have to disagree. Mainstream games did indeed peak at Duke3d, however independent developers are still making amazing games to this day. Infact, it's a golden age for the indie devs.

Oh man, if only you saw how much this engine has come over the years. Now you can use a special SUPER megazeuz graphics mode, which is very chunky for text but graphics look fantastic, now you can use special smzx pallette counters in robotic to take advantage of all 256 in the vga pallette.
@Pixelmusement7 жыл бұрын
+MeatBeat I know. I would argue though that if you REALLY want to exceed the text-mode boundaries to that extent you're probably better off using a different game engine by that point. :P

I made a game where you could launch up into a space station. If you forced the airlock open, the whole station would explode.

I actually gave Megazeux a try. I gotta say I find the graphic style very charming and some of the basic games are fun. One thing I didn't like with my Mac version was that in window mode everything was so small and I couldn't find a way to resize/upscale the graphics. I guess this has to do with them being tile/text based graphics or something. I did find the default absence of an HUD odd and some of the control keys were weird. I do wish there was a way to make stand alone Megazeux games without having to own Megazeux, ah well. Edit: I just checked out the latest version of Megazeux (2.91) and apparently you CAN now resize the window in game and in programing mode too! So that's cool :) I may look into MZ again.

Your Megazeux game was very nice, slick clean layout and graphics. I'd say the only thing I didn't like about Megazeux was the VGA only support, odd choice for a text mode system. :\
@Pixelmusement9 жыл бұрын
Logan Jorgensen It was necessary given the full control creators had over the palette. With EGA, that kind of palette control is not possible. :P
@loganjorgensen9 жыл бұрын
***** Well EGA colors are not as nice but the 640 X 350 mode was pretty sharp and there were extended graphics modes on third party boards for higher resolutions. Although CGA support would have been pushing it. ^_^

Its sad that it takes hundred man teams years and millions of dollars to make games, back when a handful of guys could make a game in their basement there could still be a sense of craftsmanship to games, a labor of love. Playing Doom you can tell which levels are by which designers by their style, these days it takes a huge team of guys to make one game map and it will lack personality. Games peaked for me around Duke3d, back when one guy could still make considerable content.
