What tips have helped you go back to school? Let me know!
@HelloThere-ki5mg3 жыл бұрын
Weirdly enough: sticky notes. For every task I need to complete (not limited to school) I write it on a sticky note (preferably a pack with a bunch of fun colors so it's more appealing) and stick it on a wall or whiteboard. When I finish it, I take off the sticky note and I get the dopamine rush of having something completed, and because I have a physical action to show me that my brain goes to "yay I did something! What's the next thing?" and not "oh no this going by so slow and I have so much left to do and I can't even remember half of it..."

I’ve found that listening to recordings of a lecture helps me take notes because I can pause it to write and process the information and then continue the recording and it’s much less stressful
@rachelgrit3 жыл бұрын
Yes!! I used to do this as well. I struggled in person with missing little details while daydreaming or even while writing something else down. The ability to pause is a game changer!!

I really appreciate what you said at the end about failure. My family treated failure like a death sentence, so when I failed, I didn't know how to take it. I panicked and gave up completely at so many easy things because of minor setbacks. Failure is unavoidable/inevitable for humans, and a necessary part of life. I had to teach myself those things after seeing the aftermath of my failures; life does go on, and time still passes, so I don't have to quit so easily. If I do, I'll never progress. I'm in a place that I don't want to be in because I didn't know how to handle failure before. Your speech at the end made me realize that this is my biggest problem. Now, my focus is learning how to cope with failure.

That’s so frustrating and I’m sorry your family didn’t have your back! Too much of our time is spent trying to figure out how to do things by others’ standards, and it feels like any other way is wrong. You’ve got this! Failure is not final. Failure isn’t even really failure - quitting is the only real failure, everything else is a learning opportunity. 🌿

I understand completely and it makes me feel better to see someone else struggle with getting over failure. It took me a long time to accept that I’m going to fail and when I do it’s not the end I’m not a failure. I remember when I first dialed a college class ever and it was devasting I completely shut down and became depressed. My parents more specifically my father was appalled and in disbelief that I could let that happen for a class I could have passed. I got behind in the class and it went downhill I was taking it as a senior in high school. It was a horrible experience for me but It made me realize that I have to be able to cope with it and not shut down or avoid it.

Using a text to speech program for reading has been a game changer. I don’t have to use my eyes and I can fidget and it’s like the info just gets downloaded to my brain!

I have anxiety too and the weird thing is that when I take my adhd meds, my racing thoughts (my biggest anxiety symptom) are GONE. Like completely gone. It’s like silent up there in the ol noodle

Classical music is so helpful for me when I’m really trying to focus on things 😊

Yes! It's so soothing. I've put together a playlist of the best songs I've found over the years and they get my brain right in the mood to focus.

It's great... until you're a music major and it just gives you PTSD😂😂

Lol you didn't even need to tell me that you have adhd, I could tell just from your talking style haha. I have inattentive adhd and I've noticed that I tend to talk in a very similar way, branching from one topic to more and more side topics, but usually not nearly as organized as you're doing it in this video haha. I really admire how well you integrated the "adhd tangents", without them distracting too much from the main subject. Definitely a skill I need to learn lol

It’s the most important piece! 😊 Who cares if I technically do all the “right things” if the result isn’t what I need it to be? Individual tactics for individual brains! 🌻

@@rachelgrit Thank you!I find it best when i study for 15-20 minutes and make 3min pause.Im not diagnosed yet,but i procrastinate a lot and can't focus.Also i study the best the night before exam,when i MUST study...well it worked for elementary and highschool but not for uni.Even if i have 3 months for 5-6 textbooks i will still begin reading them 1 week before the exam.
