What is ADHD Stimming? Well this is interesting as stimming is short for self stimulatory behaviour, and it stems from autism.
Usually ADHD Stimming is caused because the person has a diagnosis of autism and ADHD.
But more recently, it is now common to see people with ADHD stimming without even having an autism diagnosis.
Why? Because ADHD is a neurological disorder the same as autism, the ADHD brain will crave dopamine that you can get from repetitive motion or stimulation which is where stimming originates.
ADHD Stimming can come from being excited about an evernt or pending situation or even nervous about something that is going to happen.
What is your take on this, do you know about ADHD stimming? Please pop it in a comment down below.

I am actually AuDHD. I am realizing how many stims I do, and sometimes more than one at a time. I will be coloring while listening to music (unless I’m cleaning or something, it’s almost always a song on repeat). And sometimes even chewing gum. I feel like I do have a LOT of nervous energy to get out and I definitely struggle with identifying feelings and how the feel within my body.

As ADHD person I stim heavily and it's funny people so much talk about stimming and autism. I can tell , I do it predominantly to release this inner restlessness and partymode, because when I don't do it, I get tense and dissociate emotional. Also I do it to get the dop up in lows to get more concentrated. So it's not ... at least I feel... really emotional bound... more enjoying the muscle tension and the fidgeting when flapping hands, using fidget toys and all. Nice you actually adress it in a video. ❤

My grandson is autistic, he is four. He mainly stimms at bedtime. He mainly makes a noise while crab pinching with his hands. Not every night though. Rarely does it through the day. This is our experience with autism.

ADHD person here with GAD, and I absolutely agree that ADHDers stim. It wasn't until I started working with autistic children that I realize, "Hey, I stim a lot too." And that thumb twirling thing, I did that A LOT as a kid and would find myself doing from time to time as an adult too.

I'm AuDHD. I rock back and forth a lot, pace, flap my hands, spin, run in circles, skip, jump, push off walls, hit my chest/any surface, hum, click my tongue... I guess these are the stims I do on the regular. I also listen to songs/watch videos over and over again. And I usually do some of these simultaneously. I also have restless leg syndrome, I've had it for a decade and it mostly happens when I'm lying down trying to sleep.

@@tornadofreaks5744 I sometimes do that too. But I'd say when I'm standing, after a few minutes of listening to my playlists I would eventually find myself pacing for hours, whereas if I'm sitting, I'd probably be rocking back and forth/side to side.

I have a son, 18, who had adhd, anxiety, depression, ocd, and high-function autism. I don't know what his stimming is. I noticed he shakes his head, and his eyeballs go to the back of his head. I thought it was a coping mechanism when he's nervous about something?

Uh, that doesn't sound like a typical stim behavior. If you can communicate with him while he does that, make sure you try to. If you try and he doesn't respond to you then try waving your hand in front of his face while saying his name. If he still doesn't respond then try tapping him on the shoulders. If you still get no response then check to see if he's confused after he stops. Does he have a blank stare while this happens? Does he stop blinking? Does he drool? Not trying to scare you but it's important to to rule out things like seizures. Especially since autism and epilepsy often come together. Seizures can mimic stims as well. Rocking back and forth or side to side can be a stim and it can be a part of a seizure. Pacing as well can be a stim and part of a seizure. The fact that you don't know his stims is a bit concerning. As the parent/caregiver, you should be able to identify his stims. Maybe not all of them, but you should know at least a few.

I've started making natural material fidgets and fidget spinners, would you perhaps like to trial some of them? I've sent them to a few people and so far the result is positive. As a hater of plastic it makes me feel good to make them from something natural.

I started stimming about 6 or 7 years ago in the workplace but its just movement's with my hands & fingers. It does help deal with stress & if negative thoughts are about to come into my head, that too but it doesn’t happen all the time.
