My experience using Strattera (Atomoxetine) for treating ADHD.
Classified as an 'SNRI' (Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor) drug, this non-stimulant medication is an alternative option to consider. As with all medications, there's potentially good results and potentially bad side effects. Don't let any negative aspects of this video put you off Strattera, as everyone responds differently. Only when you try it out for yourself will you know if it's right for you. If you're interested in giving Strattera a trial run, you should consult a psychiatrist.

What's interesting is that Strattera apparently does NOT cause emotional blunting (according to Dr. Russell Barkley)- so I think I may have mistaken it for consistent, mild irritability that made me less 'happy' and more 'zombified'. Hopefully this doesn't happen for you!

Never heard of straterra (atomoxetine) could cause emotional blunting. I thought only stimulants did that. You know...according to Dr Russel Barkley.

Thank you for posting this comment. (I would say that this deserves a video edition, by the way, as this one id indeed a nasty side effect.) For a while, I got confused too, since I used Strattera to for some time. But now I realise that this was more for Vivanse (Elvanse in Europe), which I used to take at a too high dose, and caused that effect of lack of emotions. My experience with Strattera was that the possitives are great (you describe them perfectly) in my case I also stopped tearing my nails off, which was good, and it also consolidates the effects with time, so to stick to the treatment brings reward, you also mention that. The bad thing is that it carries annoying side effects, like serious difficulty to urinate, some eyaculation delay -I know what you nasty guys are thinking on XD... but this might not be always as interesting as it sounds... The good news, or rather the new hope, is that after revisiting my treatmentss history (I don't manage to get feeling of time passing so I need to take action and refine meds treatment after three years without a change) I have decided to give Strattera another try. The reason is that back in that time I used to strongly lead the treatments choice (I guess doctor got fed up of me soon and let me lead) and driven by my rushes to get results I increased dose too fast, getting up to 100 mg in a few weeks. That's likely the cause I quit even if I was getting the benefit. So, this time I'm going to be patient and to agree a dose increase pattern with the doctor starting from low, maybe even 10 g and e.g. increasing by 8/10 g per month until benefit is started noticing. Then I will keep it for 2/3 months and when stable and only if I feel I could get better improvement and side effects don't show up, I will step into a higer dose, then +2/3 months and then decide whats next, hopefully to keep it. Wish me luck!, I will keep you posted in!

It's really weird! I'm on strattera right now and while I seem to have won the adhd-medication lottery in that I barely have any side-effects at all and it actually works really well for me, whenever I titrate up a few mg I do feel some emotional blunting for a few days. Exactly how you describe it but temporary. I have also heard tons of other stories from people who experienced the same prolonged side-effect as you, i.e. "not feeling that sad but not that happy either". It might be possible that Dr. Russel Barkley is wrong or uninformed on this but I can't imagine why. According to himself, "Strattera activates the anterior singulate" and when reading about the anterior singulate cortex on wikipedia, one of its functions is "modulation of emotional responses". I've only heard him mention strattera once though, and he didn't discuss it at length. I still maintain that you might benefit from bupropion since it does some of the things that strattera does but it also helps with anxiety! :)

Remembering where I put my keys, forgetting names, dates, quality of work was going down etc. because of this I was also struggling with sever anxiety. I developed ticks, I could never sit still and not being able to sleep. I was prescribed this medicine today and I’ll start taking it tomorrow and I really hope it helps. What I want more then anything is to just live in a moment. I want to know what it feels like to RELAX for once.

I had side effects until week 2.5 tired, nausea, emotional light headed if I didn’t eat right, or before I took my pill. I am on 25mg a day. In week 4. My body has adjusted, BUT I discovered I have to eat before I take meds! Also if I don’t eat lunch or dinner I get nausea and light headed. Here is what has changed in these 4 weeks. 1. Between day 5-7 I woke up RIGHT when my alarm went off (NEVER HAPPENS) I went straight to getting ready, did not get side tracked at all!!! 2. Around day 5-7 I also began being 10 mins early to everything! I didn’t wake up earlier, I didn’t change much, I was just so much more able to organize myself. 3. My cell phone usage has gone down 67%!!!! I no longer can sit on my phone, I have to be doing stuff. But I don’t have anxiety or stress about it. It feels good to be productive. I feel normal 😭. 4. Anxiety went WAY down, I stopped over thinking everything! It was ruining my life. 5. I have a clear mind. I no longer have 50 thoughts running through my mind at the same time. I am even able to properly listen to friends when they speak!!!!! I can actually hear them, and not the thoughts in my head about what they are saying, or what I want to say… 😭 6. I have lost weight, only about 5 LBs. This is huge for me. My emotions were tied to my eating. So was STRESS. I couldn’t lose weight because I was so stressed and depressed. My emotions are more leveled out. Because I have to eat to take my pill and avoid nausea my metabolism has kicked in! Before I overthought food, and preparations. So I didn’t eat properly. I literally would constantly skip meals, leaving me drained. 7. Confidence levels have gone up, I am not over thinking things. I am also accomplishing so much! 8. I am a stay at home mom, I could only do about 4 of my chores a day, I am now accomplishing everything I set out to do 😭 Something I could never do before. Running to the store is no big deal, it used to take so much energy out of me to do even the smallest tasks because my mind was constantly going, and I was constantly masking, and over exerting myself. 9. My fridge isn’t overflowing. I can actually meal plan! Something I could never even wrap my mind around. My grocery bill went down by half, and I noticed this at week 3, I am ORGANIZED (better 😂) but I am in week 4 and I feel like it’s a tool I am learning. 10. I am happy and less overwhelmed, I can enjoy my life and my kids so much more! It has literally changed my life. The Dr. said it would take 4 weeks for side effects to go away, and he started me low. He said it’s going well so he won’t change it. I could not be more grateful. I was so anti prescriptions. But this one has lowered my anxiety and stress, given me the chance to be who I always knew I could be. I exercise, I accomplish chores, I enjoy family, I feel like an adult. I feel healthier and so I am glad I tried it, I’m glad I gave a prescription a try. I couldn’t be more grateful. Blessings and good luck to you all.

I have been on it for about a year now at 100mg a day. I'm also huge 6'5' & 380lbs. What I have discovered is exactly the same as you. I grew up on ritalin in elementary school and junior high. High School I was on Adderall. Then I got diagnosed with severe hypertension in my 20s. So I cannot take stimulants for my ADD anymore. Strattera made me a "reader" too. I cannot believe how many books I've read. Never been a reader. Also my anxiety has been greatly reduced. The emotional front has been greatly reduced too. Same as you I'm very mellow all the time. The worst side effect is dry mouth. I hate it. It has also made me drink more water which I guess isnt a bad thing. Over all like you. I prefer strattera rather than ritalin and adderall. Way more balance. Great video.

@@fishingthesoutheast5404 almost three months now. Ok, so the first week was amazing, complete focus, it regulated my apetite, reduced my anxiety, became very logical. Problem is during the second week my brain deveolped resistance and most of the positive effects dissapeared. Also emtoional bluntness messed up with my acting career terribly, so had to stop taking it. The GOOD thing is that once I stopped taking it for 2 days, all my emotional intensity came back BUT I got to keep much of the logical positive effect. So for me the key is taking it once or twice per week (even though doctor tells me to take it every day, but all doctors will do that), so my brain doesnt generate resistance and I get to keep emotional balance.

Ik this comment is old but I will like to share my opinion and personal opinion and life experience. ADH"D" is more of a brain and not really specific depending on the rest of the body. I don't believe that having the internal and external parts of a "man, woman, and intersex" plays a big facter. While I have the body parts of a cis man, was assigned as birth as one, and I identify one by choice. I'm also Autistic and I do have traits of both "male" and "female" autism. Especially the sensitivity area that is labeled "Autistic female traits". The brain is just itself and not a sex related thing with differences. The internal body can be different, just not in terms of the label of sex, but the developed individual itself. Most likely from genetic factors or what the baby had being developed had feed into them by the pregnancy process. To conclude. Me sharing the "male" and "female" type brain. Similar to most social constucts of whats deemed "socially acceptable", even if they don't cause harm at all when not followed. Is just another thing the medical field is doing to put more seperate labels towards us, to divide us when the "difference" aren't actual differences.

My current experience with atomoxetine is almost exactly as yours lol. The drowsiness, the emotional bluntness, etc. But it works well, and as far as concentration goes, I am able to focus really really well, a massive improvement from what i was before. I haven't completely quit the med but I usually avoid it unless there's a job where i desperately need to concentrate for long hours (exams and stuff. They do make me very tired at the end of the day though, so mostly it all comes to pros and cons for me. I try to weigh them both, and try to know if the tiredness and drowsiness that comes with it will be worth the job i'll get done with atomoxetine. But otherwise, yeah, for adhd it works wonders, and the other side effects aren't that bad, can live with it

Strattera really helped with regulating my extreme mood swings (should mention I'm also taking Quetiapin, a medication normally used for bp or schizophrenia to regulate moods), so the "numbing" was pretty good for me. Since it also works like an antidepressant, it helped a little with my reoccurring depressive episodes and doesn't make you quite as cloudy as an antidepressant. However it doesn't help me concentrate much, if at all and made me feel incredibly sick and gave me stomach pains once I was on 80mg. 60mg was ok though, no side effects apart from a little sleepiness. Hoping I'll have a better effect with stimulants as I'm still v easily distracted and impulsive.

Thank you. I just got it prescribed, but I feel better after watching this video, despite the side effects, I have mixed ADHD, I'm also a doctor but I have absolutely no experience with this medication because I don't know anyone who takes it and I don't see psychiatric patients. But I got real happy and excited when you said you were able to read a book, because I'm terrible at that (I know the irony of being a doctor, but when you like something you focus and retain information more easily). I have to get studying for a future degree and I hope Atomoxetine helps.

It feels better, I can sit down pick up a book and read, I still need to focus, it's not a magic pill, but on 25 mg it's good for me, maybe you need more milligrams, that's for your doctor to determine. I do like however the constant feeling, it's not a pill that will get you feeling great for a certain amount of hours, I already have this issue with Clonazepam and prefer the SNRI than the usual Adderall or Ritalin.

I've just been diagnosed at 30 and have just tried Dexamphetamine and Ritalin. Dex was terrible and just made me high as a kite, and Ritalin was great for concentration but gave me shocking anxiety as it wore off and a similar thing to what you describe - feeling not "myself" and like my brain was being hijacked. Very disturbing feeling. I've struggled with terrible anxiety and depression all of my life and I'm beginning to think that nothing is going to help : (. I'm so tired of these emotional rollercoasters messing me about. I just want to feel like me, but more calm. I think my Dr. will try Strattera next but I am worried about the side effects. Thanks for your video!

Dude….. exercise, exercise, exercise, go on a plant based diet, meditate and fast one day a week… stay hydrated - 1.5ltrs a day. I GUARANTEE you, you will feel better. Its leveled out most of my emotional high and low while letting me get sleep when my body/mind allows it. Work with doctor in full description though if you're trying to work on perfect dosage... They tend to want you to try several ways of taking it (time its taken, did you eat, or how is it making you feel). I got mine's attention by doing full notes since speaking is a challenge for me. *Now its a simple appt to check in and get refills* :-)

Isn’t there a way to test your actual brain chemistry to see what’s going on? That we don’t have to play this guessing game? I was just recently diagnosed and I first started out on Vyvanse because my daughter told me that it worked well for her. After being on Vyvanse I felt that my motor reflexes were off a little bit and I experienced brain fogginess. But the biggest reason that I stopped taking Vyvanse was that it shot my Dopamine through the roof. I felt that my body already produced enough Dopamine and this just super charged it. Of course I didn't know this before taking Vyvanse. I asked my psychiatrist if I could take something else that was the polar opposite of Vyvanse and she suggested that I take Atomoxetine. I feel right now that this medication is right for my symptoms and has really balanced out my life. I'm more motivated and focused and even though it's not a stimulant, I have more staying power throughout the day. Getting that diagnosis was the happiest day of my life and now all the puzzle pieces fit, where before I felt stupid or slow. I hope now that I understand how my creative mind works that one day I could get off medication for good. Thanks for your channel. I have learned a lot about my ADHD and that I'm not alone. I'm neurodivergent and I love it!!

Thank you for this video. I'm almost 50 and just got diagnosed. I picked up my Strattera this afternoon and tomorrow will be my first day taking the medication. I wasn't aware that it would take a while to work., but hopefully, when it does take effect, this will fix some of my issues. I retired from the military 5 years ago, and since then, my life has been... unproductive. I have almost no real deadlines and it is very difficult for me to find the motivation to get anything done. It has been extremely frustrating and I feel like I can't move on to the next phase of my life, that I'm stuck in a giant rut that I cannot get out of. I'm hoping this will get me out of this hole and moving towards the life I want to pursue.

I'm curious how you've been feeling on the Strattera since you started about a week before I did. I'm having insomnia, irritability, flat-affect, night sweats, & some dizziness. My Dr wants me to go up to twice daily, but I'm afraid of side effects getting worse. I've heard it can take 2 months before relief is achieved. Not sure I can stick it out that long. Very frustrated with these side effects 😔 How are you doing on it & what dose are you at? Thanks in advance! UPDATE: I stopped the Strattera after trying 18mg a day for 3 weeks. Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m about to pick up my first prescription of Strattera in the next couple days (due to work and holidays) and it’s good to know what to possibly expect. I’ve been on Wellbutrin before for depression before I was diagnosed with ADHD, and it made me numb to feelings and super sleepy. Didn’t help me quit smoking either 😂 I wanted to steer away from stimulants because of how immediate the effects are, and a possible dependency on it. Plus all the symptoms I’ve seen with friends that have been prescribed adderall and Ritalin.

I’ve been taking 25mg of Strattera for a week now and I’m noticing subtle changes. I can think a little clearer now and don’t get distracted as easy, I went to the store yesterday and I didn’t need a list, but I remembered and purchased what I needed without actually making an honest effort (rare). I did noticed my appetite has decreased tremendously, I have to force myself to eat lunch and I haven’t felt the need to snack at ALL (indirect benefit if you intermittent fast). My bile movements are solid as a rock and my emotions are pretty chill. I’ll update weekly.

My mood changed for the better on Straterra, but when I turned 18, I didn't have Medicaid anymore and we couldn't afford it. I'm not 24 and have health insurance, but started on Adderall to see if it would be better for me now since I'm less hormonal, but I considering Straterra again. This drug changed my life, seriously. I was so nervous about taking it, but after seeing so many success stories on reddit, I figured I had to try. I just finished writing up my a research design for a scholars program I'm in. I did it all by myself, and I didn't at all feel overwhelmed. I showed it to my partner and I was so happy and proud, because four weeks ago I wasn't even able to sit for longer than 10 minutes, I had so much trouble concentrating! It was absolutely horrible not being able to concentrate, especially since ADHD was new to me (happened during adulthood, not childhood-also, women often are not diagnosed because the symptoms can be different than in men). I am so thankful to be on Strattera. 40 mg for me, and so far, so good. Only thing I worry about is I have trouble sleeping, but you can take melatonin for this. Also, I bought a blood pressure monitor because I've read that people can get slightly higher blood pressure with Strattera. I love that you made this video because testimony from other people is what empowered me to make this decision, and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. If anyone is reading this, please give it a try! I hope it works out for you, !si se puede!!!!

Another problem with Atomoxetine is that you have take it regularly. But stimulants can be taken only when you need it.

I am thinking of trying Strattera. I already am on Wellbutrin (Bupropion). Because it is an NDRI, I am a little fearful of trying Strattera because I feel it might make me aggravated. I guess you don’t know till you try, doses may need to be adjusted (especially the Wellbutrin to accommodate the Strattera). Something has to be done about my inattentive adhd. I feel like its working subtly because I can now sit down and do the readings for my major for like 40 minutes at a time as long as I have some caffeine too. Had to cut down on caffine for the first few days but I really didn't have many side effects, mostly fast heart rate and um constipation the first couple days. No, this is not a placebo, such a powerful inhibitor of noradrenaline usually immediately shows its effect, as it acts on the person’s hit-and-run system in a direct way, moreover, I would recommend especially anxious people to start with 5 mg and increase the dosage not like an SSRI after 3-4 days, and build up much much longer, relatively speaking 10 mg onle after 2 weeks 15-20 mg in another 2 weeks 30-40. Also, especially with ADHD, it often happens that the brain reacts to new substances in the brain with a surprising decrease in ADHD symptoms, while after a while it may stop working, since this was not due to the substance itself, but simply to a change in brain biochemistry (This does not apply to straterra because it specifically acts on the circuits that are directly related to ADHD, but you may have noticed that when trying other different things, it first worked, and then stopped). In fact, I have noticed that many antidepressants work right away, but after 2-4 weeks they start to adjust like parts in a new engine, and some have less side effects and the overall effect may change.

Was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and the first thing i said to my doctor was that i was willing to try any medication there is to help me(and ofc any other form of treatment) any medication but Strattera! Maybe it could help me, but the ammount of possible side effects outweigh the possible benefits for me. Plus, if you compare it to methylphenidate or Adderall, those drugs have a more instant effect, i found it quite easy to try and find my effective dose, plus if i would have had some negative side effect the drug goes out from your system quite fast, but for Strattera it takes a long time to try and find a good dose. If you benefit from it, good for you! It is a valuable drug for some people who maybe had no luck with other medication containing stimulants. But for me, no thank you. Side note, here in Sweden where i live, Strattera is the third hand alternative. Usually you first try methylphenidate, then Adderall and if none of those help you try Strattera. It can be the first hand option if you have a substance abuse, or for other reasons shouldn’t be given stimulants. Sorry for long text, but you know.. 😂

In Italy, Strattera is the first hand option, even if you never took illegal substances or had hearth problem or other conditions. Adderall is illegal and treated like a hard street drug. I like this country, but sometimes it is really behind other nations. I am on sixth week and the side effects are harsh, and the only effects it is having on me. Hopefully they will prescribe at least a low dose stimulant with it.

I’ve been on straterra for almost a year and a half now. It was good at first - better than the stimulants which really messed me up. I agree it really does level out my brain and make things clear. I especially found this to be the case when I was meditating regularly. I’ve fallen off that horse for the most part and now I still have bouts of anxiety, minor mood shifts, and can be distracted/spaced out at times but not nearly as bad as I used to be. What’s starting to bother me though is probably similar to the emotional blunting/depressive effects. I just don’t seem to care much about anything anymore. At first it was nice, I could put way less stress into studying for university, walk into an exam with I “I know what I know and if it’s not enough then oh well” sort of attitude and actually do pretty decently without test anxiety. But that apathy has started to creep into other things. I landed my dream job at a bird observatory this past summer, which required long hours, and had a difficult time keeping up to the pace. I’d be very tired but unable to drink coffee due to the anxiety it caused so spent a lot of my time there in a daze. Actually being in a daze is really the only time I’m happy, when I’m off daydreaming about writing poetry or other writing projects, or contemplating philosophy or spirituality. It’s a lovely place to be but it’s not very realistic. It’s hard to keep up with the pace of the world and I simply don’t care about normal things, the things I used to care about, like succeeding at a career or travel, or dating. Anything thrilling and most things having to do with other people (not out of anxiety but now disinterest). Instead, I find myself more attracted to peace and solitude. Actually that is my other huge concern - while I’d like companionship and can appreciate emotional intimacy and aesthetic appeal, I have absolutely zero sex drive. People’s advances actually cause a pretty negative reaction in me. I did go through some significant trauma a couple of years ago that could be contributing to all these effects so it’s hard to say but I’ve done a lot of work over the time I’ve been taking these drugs and resolved quite a bit and that desire for life is still generally lacking. I also think my friends would say I’ve been pretty uninteresting and overly critical/serious lately and I myself have noticed I don’t find anything fun or funny anymore. Take it with a grain of salt because many other factors of my life have changed but I’m thinking about going off the meds, maybe after I quit vaping since I think it might help manage the anxiety and other effects of nicotine withdrawal.
@maltheopia
@maltheopia 9 ай бұрын
Fascinating story. I quit vaping about a month ago because I would like to get a federal job. While I no longer feel cravings for THC, I haven't had a good night's sleep since then despite using up pretty much every sleep medication I can get my hands on. I also end up peeing very frequently, and the smallest need for urination wakes me up. After not taking Adderall for about a year and a half (after only being on it for about a year), I first took Strattera today, we'll see how that goes. I definitely feel the emotional bluntness after just one day. I can also feel my sex drive decrease. I also feel pretty sleepy. However, I've also been able to concentrate way better than I used to.
