In our 5th video of the Hindu Scripture Series, I talk about the greatest debate in the history of the world, one between Adi Sankara and Mandana Misra and Ubhaya Bharati.
Mandana Misra is a great Mimamsaka and a Grihastya. Ubhaya Bharati is his wife.
Adi Sankara is a great Vedantin and a Sanyasi.
Both Adi Sankara and Mandana Misra have a debate and in this video I tell the story behind that debate and what had happened during and after the debate.
Do check out the video.

Sri.Adi Sankara had set up four peethas. 1. His disciple Sri padmapadacharya headed Kalika marh at Dwaraka 2. Sri.Thotakacharya headed Jyotir math at Badari 3.Sri.Hastamalakacharya headed Govardhan math at Pruri 4.Sri.Sureswaracharya headed Sharada math at Sringeri Sri.Adi Sankara lived on earth for 32 years. In that span he had set right everything regarding religious rites. He did shanmatasthapana. He wrote so many stotras like Soundaryalahari, Sivanandalahari, Nrusimha stotram etc.

Very nice recap! But you missed this part -> After winning debate with Ubhaya Bharati, Adi shankara out of compassion towards the humanity, stopped Her with vanadurga mantra, and asked Ubhaya Bharati to stay in the hermitage of rishyashrnga (shrnga giri aka Sringeri, in the same place where He establishes shArada pITham) as Mother Sharadamba, to intellectually nourish the humanity in Kaliyuga. He identifies Sringeri as a great yagna vATika of an exceptional maharshi as a snake hoods to give shade and protect a dehydrating thirsty frog. Such congenital enemies were not displaying enmity, it should be the place of utmost satva guNa. Shankara Vijayam describes this🙏

One in dwaraka and last one in badarikashram . Next one is Dakshinamanya peetadipati is sri sri bharatiteertha swamiji. And his successor sri sri vidhushekhara bharati Purvamanya peeta is run by sri sri nichalananda saraswati., pachimnaya peeta n uttaramnya peeta r run by sri sri swaroopananda saraswati.

Hi one correction Sri Ubhaya Bharathi didn't go to Brahma Loka. Sri Shankara Bhagvatpada placed Sri Ubhaya Bharathi Devi in Sringeti on to a sandal wood and made a parampara of Bharathi name added to every pithadhipati of Sringeti.

Nicely explained.. but you did not explain how ubhaya bharati entered brahma loka. She did not enter Brahma loka immediately. It was thought she would follow Manadana Mishra but at a safe distance separate from Adi Shankara and Mandana Mishra.. THere is a very big story behind that that also explains how at one point she shed her mortal and gave a boon to Adi shankara that Adi Shankara can invoke her presence at a place Adi shankara wants.. That place where Adi Shankara invoked her is Shringeri and Sharadamba (Saraswathi) mutt was established and Manadana Mishra was appointed as head of the mutt by Adi Shankara

You did a great job!! Question for you, do you (or anyone for that matter) know of any modern debates (in English) between advaita and vishishtadvaita? I love Vedanta and Shankaracharya but I wonder how a qualified advaitin Swami would respond to the criticisms vishishtadvaita makes against advaita. Thank you, and again, great job on a great video!!

Thank you. I am sure you must have seen the below image. images.app.goo.gl/eZ4Ug3SjzD1J3uxw9 The point is they will sort out the matter between themselves, the debates et al! What we as followers should do is respect every school of thought and every guru so that we don't have internal feuds amongst ourselves and open our flanks for others to prey on us. Hope you get the drift! 🙏😊 Jaya jaya Shankara hara hara Shankara! Om namo Narayanaya! 🙏

@@ZestyNimbu thank you for your reply although there is some misunderstanding that I should clear up. When I ask about debates in no way is this meant as disrespect for different traditions. Not at all. Did Adi Shankaracharya debate hindu and buddhist schools out of disrespect for these schools? The answer is no. Do Tibetan Buddhist monks debate each other out of disrespect for one another? The answer again is no. . Debates are not for the purpose of "disrespect" or of creating "internal feuds", as you say. At least that is not the intent of those who are sincere. Debates are important for a number of reasons. One reason among several others, is that they enable us to better understand different points of view of different sampradayas, which then allows us to deepen our understanding of the scriptures common to them all. Again, this is only one reason among several others. From a certain perspective, most all paths can be seen as stepping stones leading upwards. Therefore, respect is given to them all. An analogy given is climbing the stairs. When you reach the top of the stairs, should we be critical of the bottom steps, or the middle steps, or the highest steps? Again, not at all. All steps lead upwards towards the top of the stairs. I hope this helps to clear up the confusion. Thank you and may God bless.

@@Atomic419 I read criticisms and hence I replied that way. You are absolutely right when you say there is respect for every sampradaya and debates are a must for keeping the ideas flowing and in particular our Sanatana Dharma where that was the case since time immemorial. There would surely be many debates happening among the great seers. Unfortunately we are not privy to them. But thank you for a great response! I hope you keep watching my videos further and sharing your insights! 🙏😀

Adi Sankara got Gnanam from a Chandala. Sankara's views on the Chandala who he met at kashi got changed when he was reminded that in-dweller of even that Chandala is the same Atman as that of a Brahmin.

Isn't it prohibited for a sanyasi to indulge in coitus?
@ZestyNimbu
@ZestyNimbu Жыл бұрын
Hi. I assume you have watched the video. If so, you would have seen that at the time of the said activity, the soul of Adi Sankara was in the body of a deceased king. And when you see the video further, the said king also became a better version of himself. Adi Sankara's body was preserved somewhere else. So the answer to your question is - no, Sanyasi didn't indulge in "Coitus". Also, prohibition is a very alien word in Hinduism. When you think about it, "Coitus" is the basest instinct of a man! It's usually associated with animals used for procreational purposes. In Sanatana Sanskriti, sex falls on the wayside the more you go towards seeking God. In Sanatana Dharma, attaining to God is the ultimate truth. Moksha is the ultimate thing. So, prohibition is more of an "Abrahamic" concept. Hope this answers your question. :)

@@ZestyNimbuthank you and I understood all that but in sanyasa, the emphasis is more on both mental and physical renunciation and in fact more so on 'mental', it is still Shankara in the King's body who is indulging in sensual activities. Wouldn't this be a line he's crossing as a sanyasi?
@ZestyNimbu
@ZestyNimbu Жыл бұрын
Shankara did that as a means to win a debate as he was challenged by Devi Ubhaya Bharati who is an incarnation of Saraswati Devi. He already knew about the process of sex and everything and only did this to gain physical knowledge too. I mention all this in the video, so I encourage you to watch it again without prejudice! Also, we as normal humans can’t really say what is crossing the limits or what isn’t. To know more about Parakaya Pravesam (the process that Shankara used to get into the King’s body), check this video of mine: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5vVc2mpg7eEadU :)

@@ZestyNimbu thank you. I am not prejudiced but I am not satisfied with the answer. I know he has to debate with scholars of different schools of thought and triumph over them to substantiate santana Dharma. I have no qualms with that but in this process, the cost is his mental celibacy. I know about parakaya pravesam.
