I would not call out anyone, nor would I really worry about running a race in them since I'm slow (though it's a shoe that doesn't interest me). I do feel that if someone is fast enough to be challenging for race wins or even age group wins, they should follow the sporting rules. Otherwise if you just want the extra stack height to help you plod your way through a long race, go for it.

As a mature runner (I'm 64) I do see the value of shoes like this, as in less fatigue on your legs during your training runs. For me the Invincible Zoom has been a revelation in protecting my legs and is also a much more stable shoe than say a NB Fuelcell Elite 2. Having said that, if I am going to do a race (done 3 this year already) then out come the lightweight shoes, but I don't race beyond 10K...

I wouldn't care about non-professionals racing in those shoes, as long as they are not faster than legal shoes. They are highly cushioned and that could prevent damage or injury especially for amateurs and long distances - that is a good thing, regardless of some ruling that is meant for the elite.

These shoes are quick but only on the road obviously with minimal cornering , they are bonkers and did bring a smile to bens face so cannot be too bad 😊, good for preserving the legs on longer runs as well!

Why does it have to be faster than the Adios Pro? The shoe is not marketed as the top racer, but as a training companion. It's suppose to save your legs with lots of cushion. Nothing wrong with that imo.

I have an injury that cannot be healed that does not allow me to run anymore. However, with this type of shoe (big cushioning and very soft) and by attacking heel, I still manage to do some jogging. It's a shame that they have the same problem as my Nike Zoomx Invincible namely the lack of stability.

Looking at your video, it seems like you were having the same problem with the upper that made me send the shoe back. The tongue doesn't actually seem to go all the way across the foot down toward the middle of the shoe. You almost end up with laces that are coming into direct contact with your foot. I wouldn't have balked about this except that the shoe was so expensive that I wasn't willing to tolerate anything that seemed even a little off. I wasn't willing to try running in it for a couple miles to see if it got better because I didn't want to send such a shoe back slightly used.

I've been running for 6 years (coaching 5 years) but Initially played ice hockey and technology changes, my first stick was wooden and now have a stick that is made of the best materials and only weighs like 100g. Seeing people complain over technology in shoes is so stupid. Things improve, give it another 5 years and I'd say most shoes will have carbon in them somewhere.

as an elite runner stick to the rules, for everybody else: who cares about stack hight? Reminds me of the discussion around the Tempo Next %, didn't stop me from buying these. Ben, when you talk about stability or the lack thereof I assume you mean "general" stability, not in the sense of pronation, do you? They seem to have a lateral bias just like the Pro 2 and while that disqualified them for you I found this a very good fit for my overpronation and really enjoy those.

I would never call out a friend/buddy for wearing this shoe. I think that there's a big difference between the elites, pros and every day runners. And if someone just enjoys new shoes, trying new things and it makes them happy and their run better I'd be all for it. I think that Adidas is well aware of the elite restrictions, they want to corner the ''normal folks'' market for cool ''elite'' shoes. I personally would be curious to try this shoe for myself because my specific leg issues.

Got a pair of these and, bit by mistake, did do some off road. Just about survived :) As you mentioned, I don't think adidas really intended these to be a race shoe (legal or otherwise) but more of an up tempo max cushioned concept shoe. I have tested them up against the Adios Pro 2 and even though I could do the same speed as intended, my HR was somewhat higher in the Prime X. So if a non elite wants to race in them then good luck but there are faster and less wobbly shoes out there IMHO. Not sure any other shoe is as fun though - well in a straight line!

@@mitchyruns7818 That's a good question and somewhat hard to answer as sadly I don't have a time machine! I think the key difference now is feeling better after hard/long runs which, in turn, should allow you to get fitter. Only sort of data point I have is that I ran 1:20/2:53 HM/Mar in the 1st Boost version of the "normal" adios in 2016 aged 49 but "only" 1:24/2:56 in NEXT% last year aged 53. On age graded you expect to decline of course and the 2:56 was marginally better on age grading but hardly amazing difference. I wore those adios shoes the other day and I certainly would not volunteer for another marathon in them now but versions of that shoe were worn for world records pre the Vaporfly. In my case I only seriously raced HM/Mar for 2 years when already aged 37 so I think I could have improved as much if not more by moving to these events earlier and progressing my training/mileage. Until then I did 800/1500 and often barely 20 miles a week. When I moved to 80 mpw I started making good gains.
@mitchyruns7818
@mitchyruns7818 2 жыл бұрын
@@TimGrose that’s interesting! I noticed that when I trained for my marathon I tended to use something like the endorphin speed more often for sessions or long runs with MP miles in there it almost made feel like I was relying on the shoes too much for the boost. I am going to try (after this injury I picked up at Brighton) to do my sessions in something like has no type of plate in it to try and build my actual fitness up a tad more. I may be wrong but just think it suits me better. Well done on all your times and PBs and on the channel, when I want a review with date you’re my go to!

You say that you are UK12. That is about 31cm in most shoes. Do you know your exact foot length ? I am at L29.5 / R29.6cm. If added 1.5cm to this, that comes down to 31cm UK12, however I find that most shoes like 95% of all shoes run very small. There is no more half size up, so the next is UK13, what adds another cm, but that is too big now. I wonder what size did you choose in the NB RC, as this brand runs particularly small. How did the UK12 compare to the Vaporfly UK12 or the Adidas UK12 in sizing ? I do short races up to 10k in the Nike Streak UK12 and they are perfect, but would definitely need to size up for a half or a full marathon. Thanks ...

Because more than 80% of runners land laterally (heel) and not having the heel taper forces an earlier overpronation (for the majorities of runners who do not have a very neutral gait). It is not just Adidas that has done this this in most models, also New Balance and others. I personally wish all would go for a heel taper. Feels much more natural though the gate cycle.

I think that it would be very churlish behaviour to call someone out for using any of the "illegal" shoes in an organized event I suppose it is down to the individual's stance on the issue and how it sits with them personally as to their use in an event. The issue is probably going to be, where do you draw the line and I agree with Gabe G below, If you are in contention for any prize or award overall or in Age Group categories then that IS an issue as they are banned/illegal for a reason ie to prevent unfair advantages in competition, so the impact is not only on you personally, but other competitors and this is where adherence to the set racing rules SHOULD apply.

Fine as a training shoe but ultimately it doesn't meet the world athletics regs, so shouldn't be used in races... If I was beaten by someone wearing them I'd feel somewhat miffed. Would being a 'mid packer' make EPO or HGH acceptable? I mean it doesn't mean a great deal in the grand scheme of things, but at what point does it become unacceptable? The only robust way to approach it is to apply the rules equally to all competitors.

I thought may as well put some effort into seeing if can "get round". If it is 26 deg C on race day, I will be "prepared" LOL.

I think it’s each to their own but personally, I couldn’t use anything that isn’t “legal” for races. If we go to a race, we race in a competitive environment and should accept the rules, we all get a place where we come, if that’s top ten, hundred or in the thousands, it should be done right and sat if I killed myself grabbing a top ten place but got beat by a few seconds by someone using this, I wouldn’t be the happiest lol. But that’s totally me and my OCD. Personally I don’t want it to ever go over 40mm, I bet some of the older runners like Radcliffe and Ryan Hall could have set some bigger times if they had these shoes back then!

What I don't like about the current rule is that it seems so arbitrary...like why 40mm, why not 30? You clearly still get a massive performance boost with vaporflys (really similar to the prime X). I'm sure if it was 45mm, then the alphafly would be 44.5mm, not 39.5mm. If you really want to take a stand against super shoes, you should be running in more minimalist shoes IMO (and that has its merits).

@@tmtbtw_ I think what it is is that when the vaporfly came in and like nearly everyone switched to it, to ban it would have been huge and maybe they just thought that it’s here now, it’s making headlines for good and bad reasons so let’s cap it here and say no more. I like it now that most brands have a shoe that can compete and it’s not just Nike or you’re loosing out. Personally, I only use any of my plated trainers for either races or tough workouts every now and again, I never use them for daily training or anything as I just feel like they’re helping me rather than my body getting fitter if that makes sense. I’d be totally cool if they banned them though, I’d like the idea of a few races in flats and stuff. I did Brighton marathon a few weeks ago and I went out in the sub 3 groups and you’re talking literally 90% or more had plated trainers on, and it must have been 80/85% of that were either vaporfly or alphafly. Think I seen a few endorphins, one or two NB RC elites and surprisingly only 1 adidas adios pro (that shoe is brilliant). Saying that, I picked an injury up and honestly feel like I was sinking into my alphaflys too much and that may have contributed to it a little bit so even now I’m thinking about going to a more minimalist or firmer racing shoe

It wouldn't be a shoe for me after hearing your negatives and seeing there wasn't much grip.

This shoe is way to much money. It seems like a more expensive invincible with carbon kitchen sink thrown in. I would not call somebody out as long as it is not a race that bans it. My theory is wear what makes you feel good (as long as you obey the rules).

I wouldn't wear them if they were not legit / legal in a race situation. I am not an elite runner by any means but I like to play by the rules. Would I call out another runner wearing them? No. Not my place but I would definitely put a mental asterisk on any race results they had. Enjoyed the video but this shoe wouldn't be for me.

Being in the non-competitive group of marathoners, I wouldn’t call out and make a stranger, who may or may not know the rules, feel bad - but would definitely call out my friends. At some point, you have to draw the line and follow the bare minimum of rules. They not legal.

Nhaaa not sold on this one! Bold move by Adidas to release this product, looks really niche as a product. Converted the GBP to CAN and it's a big nope! Thanks for the review Ben!

£220 , jesus , no way am I paying that tbh, once we all start paying 200 plus for shoes the shoe making companies will all start jacking up their prices to suit , that's why I refuse to buy Asics shoes now , over inflated price for a shoe imo

Its sucks if your goal is to be top 500, 1000 etc and you might have been but for illegal shoes. More so if it was charity focused or to qualify for another event

What was Adidas thinking in putting out this shoe and keeping it in their annual production??? Of all the pointless shoes out there this one might be #1. LOL!! It's dangerous to run in anything but a straight line. Has to be on fairly flat pavement. It's illegal for any kind of competition. There's no point in owing this shoe other than for curiosity....in the hopes you dont injure yourself finding out....wht it's like...and if you have $330 CDN to burn and dont want to buy another of the other carbon plate shoes out there at the same $...most are... 3 carbon pieces....like Kipchoges custom Nike Alphafly Nike made for him only that has 3 plates....I'd love to know if that shoe gave him an "unfair advantage" if at all. It's stack height I think was still 39 or 40mm...nothing ludiacris like the Prime Xs 50mm heel/40 forefoot...heh... Was this shoe made for Disney characters? :) To wear at Disney theme parks?? :)) Imagine the looks on the faces of onlokers who arent runners. :)) "WT_ does he hae on his shoes?" "...is he part of the SPECIAL Needs running team??" :)
