I dont even understand, why these ppl are so desperately trying to be party leader, when any1 with 2 brain cells can see, that whoever becomes the next leader (and possibly even the next again) is doomed to failure. The party still has far too many insane extremists, who will never allow anything other than said extremism, and the 1s with a few brain cells, who want to try to redo the party image, certainly wont like that. Saying, that managing the Tories in this parliament would be like herding cats, is an insult to cats. Even the most talented leader couldnt do it, and theres no talent to spot between them.

Well, you could say the same about Stalin and his bunch of liars. Savaging the Tories when they threatened pensioners cold weather payments. Saying taxes would not rise. Letting out murderers and rapists to imprison keyboard warriors. These useless muppets are out of their depth. They will sink the pound, destroy the economy and send thousands of wealth creators abroad. We will have purple-haired lunes teaching our kids their pronouns in a few short months while thousands are getting stabbed on the streets. Highly under-rated comment. The Tory party actively solicits new overseas members, and these members will have voting rights for the princely sum of £10 or so for a student member. There is no realistic way they can ensure no foreign agents are becoming members. For whomever wants to select their preferred candidate, it would cost far less than £1m. Good value if you’re Vlad Putin and you’re selecting Liz Truss or Boris Johnson.

This. Very true. No idea why the locals all line up to fellate him. He's a total no-show just like all the other remaining Tory MPs in Kent. Hopefully him pandering to the far-right is a bit of a mask off moment for many and his false reputation falls apart. His whole Tonbridge-Gatwick Airport rail line thing was only made in the election, and many others have been calling for the same thing for decades, so hopefully it falls a bit flat for most... As for the whole nicknames thing, I go with Tom Tugendtwat these days. Lost all remaining respect for him when he endorsed Farage as a hypothetical Tory leader and then lied about doing so when the rioting started. He's trying to disavow the riots while simutaneously being on their side. Total mask-off moment for me, I don't see how he's anything other than an opportunist.

Having a large dose of mind bleach close to hand, if I were a Tory moderate, I'd be voting for the looniest of the loonies, just so that the party could see how unelectable the far right loons are, and how useless they are at actual politics. Because, even with the idea that a "centrist" Tory could do well, the reality is that there isn't a single one that persuades me that they can challenge the current Labour Party. Given the choice of a rubbish centrist or a rubbish loon, better to choose the rubbish loon, because it would taint the centrist perspective less. @@Noel-ji8nm No, what won Sunak the leadership was (1) Johnson, having just resigned to be replaced by Truss, then re-entered the fray a few months later, had enough votes to go the second ballot, but withdrew. (2) The 1922 Committee gerrymandered the rules so that any candidate staying on the ballot paper had to have at least 100 nominations from the MPs, so when Johnson withdrew, Sunak won by default, the vote never went to the Party membership. The fact is whoever led the Tory Party, they were in for a hammering, polls indicated having Johnson back as leader would have made no difference whatever.

Does it matter who the Tories elect as leader? They are out of office for at least 10 years all 130 of Tories have chance have of turn as party leader, going on their past history. Not only did they lose 150 mp's in the election they also lost a lot of membership.

Cleverly is an also ran. A safe but uninspiring candidate for being a junior minister at best, so long as he sides with the PM at the time, otherwise doomed to be a low profile backbencher. The Tories will lock in their not far from ( and possibly heading for) 3rd place in Parliament.

I'm hoping Bad Enough (sic) wins, she'll make the Tories even more unelectable, guaranteeing them another 4 to 5 years out of power, and possibly more. Given that there are only 121 Tory MPs able to vote in this intital round of balloting, the difference in numbers between any of the 6 contenders succeeding and remaining on the ballot paper could be quite small. It's only the last two who are put forward to the Party membership, these are the jokers who gave us Johnson as leader in 2019 and Truss in 2022. In 2017, May won by default after Loathsome's (sic) faux pas, in October 2022, the rules were gerrymandered in the election after Truss to ensure the Tory Party members never got to vote to decide.

A good fit within the syllable pattern however? ...Starmer! He would certainly echo 'tory values'. Confirm or deny, we ought to be to be told 🤣🤣

Phil is possibly wrong on a number of points. Cleverly as Foreign Secretary (Windsor Framework hardly counts as "nothing") - was a better Foreign Secretary than Johnson, Raab or Truss, two of whom went on to become PM and one became DPM. Cleverly as Home Secretary - was a better Home Secretary than either Patel or Braverman. If you look at the others with this in mind, they are not in serious competition. Also, if you elect a far right nutter as leader, they will not likely "fail" and get deposed as they are all extremely good at being in opposition, even when they were in govt. So now they are in actual opposition they will make all the right (-wing) noises without any responsibility a job they were naturally born for. So why should they not last the parliament?

The entire Conservative Party project whatever it is has failed. Anyone who is still a member of the Conservative Party is a member because of the dream of Conservatism , whatever that is for any member of the party , not it’s achievements. Of course achievements are not going to matter, what is going to matter is how well a Conservative Party leadership candidate matches the dream of a party member.

There are polls and polls, they have various levels of accuracy. Also with the number of Tory MPs being only 121, the difference between staying on the ballot paper or leaving it could boil down to only 1 or 2 votes. It's a bit like a steeplechase, where fences (the different ballots) are likely to bring down some possibly more favoured 'runners', unexpectedly. Time for the bookies to give us some odds....
