Storing Ammo in Very Hot or Cold Places? Do Extreme Temperatures Really Degrade Ammo?

Lets torture test some 9mm Luger [9x19mm] by exposing it to multiple cycles of extreme heat and cold. Then, lets go to the range and do a 'before and after' comparison of reliability, velocity and accuracy to see if there is any practical difference. The goal is to find out if storing ammo in extreme temps such as in a car, or buried in a SHTF stash will cause it to deteriorate over time.
This experiment is a bit lengthy. You can jump to the actual performance testing at: 10:05

Great video. My initial thought was that temperatures in real life go very gradually from extreme cold to extreme heat, so I thought moving it so quickly from freezer to oven as you appeared to do wasn't a fair test and would result in problems that might not appear in real life. But I was proven wrong. Your test gives me great peace of mind over some of the ammo I've had in my work shop for a few years (most of what I have is stored in the house). Temps here in Tenn. range from a low of about 15-20 degrees a few times in the winter to high 90s in the summer. The floor of my free standing shop is insulated; the walls are not. I was thinking I might need to store the ammo in a large cooler (and I still might), but at least I now know it's not been totally degraded. My next move? Take some of my "shop" ammo to the range and make sure it's okay. Thanks for your time and effort. Greatly appreciated.

Glad it was helpful... we definitely tried to really abuse them as much as possible... extreme temp fluctuations... to see if it made a difference. A cooler is a solid idea for insulating... maybe include a large desiccant pack inside.

well i mean, they store ammo in trucks and vehicles a lot in Iraq, which has huge temp fluctuations. Not surprised...

So basically ammo does not need to be treated like a new born baby. It’s funny how other channels go into great detail about how fragile ammo is. Good vid👍

LOL... great comment. Funny how something that is purpose built for rough environments... like war zones, hunting in the backwoods, and being banged around in a magazine on your hip all day is assumed to be fragile.

I have a bad history of being over anal about this kind of stuff. Growing out of it and learning. The question I have is about conceal carry rounds being brought in from the lower temps outdoors immediately into a bit warmer place indoors. How much inbetween both before you start to get issues with the ammo? I'm doing some research about it currently.

@@Patriotusa44 I just had this issue. I had hp 40s&w and it jamming my glock. So I ran 4mags of fmj and fired perfectly. I was worried it was the gun. But it was either the ammo was just crap or it got degraded from staying in my car over night for a months
@rex8958

@@grimdavis58 I suppose maybe it could be from sweat from your body, even a little bit can eventually do some work on the primers over a month from slowly working it’s way in, that’s what I have always heard with conceal carry ammo. And not to mention some powders or primers just react differently to constant heat changing.

You should track humidity readings when storing/testing ammo. For example, Arizona and Maine are two different galaxies...
@adigaarmory
@adigaarmory Жыл бұрын
True... but the oven and the deep freezer will be bone dry in either place. This test was just temperature. For humid locations, storing it in sealed ammo cans with desiccant should do the trick.

Great video, this answered a long standing question I've had about temperature swings on ammo reliabiiity. I would guess that the powder clumped together due to expansion and contraction of the powder grains, they would tend to get wedged together, just my thoughts.

While I like your test, it is in no way even close to leaving ammo in a car trunk (or some other hot sun exposed closed space) for years on end (heating, cooling, heating, cooling, etc.) - i.e. not only heating and cooling, but humidity.

I would not want to store the bulk of my ammo long term (10 years or more) in a vehicle or barn. But yes, if one rotates a box of vehicle ammo out once a year it should always be ok. Extreme heat is the worst, so try and keep the ammo out of direct sun light, and in some form of insulating wrap/cover to help stave off rapped temp changes.

I recently did a test similar to yours, well accidentally. Like an idiot, I buried some ammo in ziplock bags, inside a waterproof plastic bucket. It sat out in the yard all winter in the snow and freeze. I dug it out during the spring when the soil defrosted. I checked the ammo and it looked fine on the outside. I haven’t looked in the gunpowder yet, I should probably do that. After watching this video I’m not too worried about it. My temperature changes were real gradual and I avoided any moisture getting into the bullets. The backstory is that I was curious if I could make a weapons cache/stash spot somewhere that would have long term storage. After watching this I think i can really narrow down the technique for outdoor long term storage
