Great question! If it is spoken, you'll need to pay attention to the meaning of the sentence, following the same rules as I explained in the sentence. Also, many English speakers will have a very small pause for the commas when they're speaking.

WHICH used when the subject is the only thing that exited on earth, or the subject both speakers know when they are making conversation. THAT used when the subject is too general so you want to make it more specific so readers can understand what you are referring to

Good distinction! We can actually use "which" in both cases, but it is not common.
