Those just-before-a-noun words that put some detail into our dialogue. Who will succeed? What will the prize be? Why are the contestants acting so strangely? Is it correct to say "I've woken up very late and I was late for school"?
@bbclearningenglish
@bbclearningenglish 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ali, Your sentence is almost correct, but not quite. The tenses are strange. From this sentence alone we can assume that the speaker is now either at school (after being late) or is home after school. This is because you have said 'I was late for school.' - the past simple, for a finished past action. Now look at the first part of the sentence 'I have woken up late...' - this is the present perfect. We only use the present perfect if the action is a)unfinished (which is not true because you WERE late for school and this happened after waking up late) or b)finished, but important in the present - but we don't combine the present perfect simple and the past simple in the same sentence. It would be better to say: I woke up very late and I was late for school. Your use of 'late' is correct in both cases though. We hope this answers your question.
