Is this comprehensive information on countable and uncountable nous? It seems to me as an infinite theme. Frequently, I'm strugling how to recognize a countable and an uncountable noun.

Can I say "I ate two fishes for lunch. a hair tail and a mackerel." And for lunch, if i ate an apple and two oranges, can I also say " I had two fruits for lunch." thank you for reading!
@bbclearningenglish6 жыл бұрын
Hi! You certainly can say both - but they sound a little usual! Most people would just say 'two fish' and 'some fruit' or 'two pieces of fruit'. Still, what you said is fine. Well done!

@bbclearningenglish6 жыл бұрын
Hi Shiwam, You are correct. 'Apples and oranges are my favourite fruits.' Because you are mentioning two different types. We wouldn't use 'fruit' here. Well done!

Why not I see three fishes
@bbclearningenglish6 жыл бұрын
Hi Zibon, Thanks for your question. You can indeed say 'I see three fishes.' but it doesn't necessarily mean the same as 'I see three fish.' I see three fish means exactly that. There are three whole fish - either alive in a pool, or dead in a kitchen. In this case we do not care if they are different species or the same. But, if we say 'I see three fishes' it means that we can identify three separate species of fish - maybe, cod, haddock and trout. The emphasis here is that there are three different types of fish. To a collector of fish, this second sentences might be important, because they would care about the types and species. To the average person, it is probably less important because they probably just want dinner! We hope this answers your question. Don't forget, you can visit our website for more detailed grammar information on this topic: www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/tgg/unit-1/session-28
