I am over 70 and just getting into Ebiking. First thing I noticed was the pressure on my hands, shoulders, and on my butt. So first mod was as you have done, raising the handlebars as high as the cabling would allow, and second was to put the biggest seat on the bike that I could find. Got vids showing that on YT as well, and thank you for sharing your experiences, we all benefit!

Excellent idea! I usually install a setback seat post and 10-12 inch riser handlebars to get that 'pedal- forward position' for comfort. That normally requires recabling the brakes and shifters along with wiring for the display and so forth. Just from personal experience with installing a stem riser, I would suggest iaking off one of the original stem spacers (that sit under the stem) and test the fit of the stem riser. I found that I had to replace one of the original 20mm spacers with an 8mm spacer. You want as good of a fit in this high stress point as possible.

I don’t think so. While it might not be as strong as the normal configuration. I have jumped curbs pulling up pretty hard without issue. I have used these for years and have never had a problem. I do, mostly, just cruise around and don’t put a lot of pressure or tension on the handlebar system. It has never loosened or failed in any way.
@richardm8933 жыл бұрын
It looks like your final picture of the larger adjustable stem is on the bike the opposite way. I take it you can put these on either way and if it is drifting too far forward you can turn it around and make it come closer to you. One way it gets farther from you and the other it gets closer, but straight up is the same both ways.
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
No, the stem is on the correct way in my video. I am not certain what the steering dynamics would be if you reversed the stem to bring the handle bars closer to you. And because of that I cannot recommend it.
@richardm8933 жыл бұрын
@@TinkeringTurtle You didnt use the last stem in your video you just showed a picture of it. I just got the part and if you put it on the same way the original one was put on it comes closer to you not going farther away from you. According to the picture you showed someone put it on the other way.
@richardm8933 жыл бұрын
So by looking at the picture I assume you can put it on the other way, but I dont think many people would because it would defeat the purpose.
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
Again, I don’t know how the steering dynamics would be affected if you put on that stem backwards. It is meant to be installed so it bends down away from the rider. Installing it backwards could affect how the bike steers and might be dangerous. I don’t know where you are seeing it installed backwards, but after reviewing my video the images I show have it installed correctly.
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
I looked at the video again, and I think you are referring to the two bolts that attach the adjustable stem to the steering tube. on the stem I used they were on the back closer to the rider. On the one you chose, the bolts are on the front of the bike away from the rider. That is just a difference in where they put the bolts. The Stem is still supposed to be installed so that it leans forward away from the rider. The location of the two bolts do not necessarily dictate the orientation of the stem.

Excellent, like all of your videos. I've watched several, and especially the one in which you talk about all of the mods you've made. I'm interested in the Cruiser and the one thing I noticed you didn't change were the mechanical disc brakes. Does that mean you're satisfied with them and didn't feel the need to switch to hydraulic?
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
I like that they are easy to work on. Once you get through the break-in period, you don’t have to adjust them as much. And they work fine for my area. (relatively flat) Full hydraulic brakes are very different to maintain. There is less adjustment and if there is a problem you will likely be dealing with bleeding the oil or something along those lines. Hydraulic calipers would be a compromise. I might try them in the future, but the mechanicals are doing their job for now.

Good morning. It is likely that you don’t have enough spacers under the adjustable stem. The system is predicated on having that 1/8” sub flush gap I spoke of in the video. Hello again, Tinkering Turtle: Since I am new to eBike mechanics, I suppose my question may sound very crazy, but you can say. Is there any reason why when installing the Adjustable Stem that I install it pointing backward toward the rider, instead of forward as customary? Doing this would move the handlebars closer to the rider which is my main issue - the bars feel too far from me. Thank you for your answer. Try not to laugh :)
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
There isn’t a mechanical reason that you can’t do that, that I’m aware of. It should still be strong. It may feel weird while steering, I’m not sure. Something to consider, when you put on the adjustable stem the correct way, because the head tube is slanted back towards the rider, when you raise the stem or angle the adjustable stem the handle bars do come back towards the rider. I would, at least, try that first and see if it does enough for you.

My personal experience is great. I haven’t had to adjust or tighten it at all. The adjustable stem has light detents with the angle adjustment. If you make sure they are properly seated I don’t think you will have any issues. If it gets tightened with the detents aligned improperly then you could have an issue. I will often pull up on the handles bars with some force to reduce the pressure on the front tire when hitting bumps and haven’t had it loosen up at all. Hope this helps!

When you talk about compression issue and tightening the headset with loose stem bolts does that not apply when you took the original stem off? I noticed you loosened the headset first before the stem bolts.
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t trying to adjust compression when removing the stock stem. I was just removing it, so the order in which I loosened and removed the bolts didn’t much matter to me. All three bolts needed to be loosened/removed.
@oOoDRAGOONoOo3 жыл бұрын
@@TinkeringTurtle Can't you adjust compression both ways or can you only tighten it? Is it perfectly fine for me to use your method or should I always loosen stem bolts first to be safe? thx
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
If I am understanding correctly, you need to tighten the top bolt first to set the compression which takes the play out of the system. Then you tighten the side stem bolts to lock it all into place. Does that make sense?
@oOoDRAGOONoOo3 жыл бұрын
@@TinkeringTurtle Maybe I'm confused because I don't know exactly how the stem works internally, I assume it works like a cork so it makes sense to loosen the stem bolts when you're squeezing the cork down otherwise it won't move and cause strain, I was just wondering if doing the reverse and taking the cork out(loosening stem bolts first) and pulling it out applied as well, or in your case just pull the cork out because the order doesn't matter, hope that analogy made sense.
@TinkeringTurtle3 жыл бұрын
Not really, I am definitely confused. When removing the stem the specific order isn’t relevant. when assembling the new stem riser the order is important.

With regard to the riser, will all the risers on say...Amazon, fit the adjustable stem? The reason I ask, is the one showing in your links seems to be 'Currently unavailable' but upon looking, there are other brands/models, but knowing if fitment is correct is the issue?

One of the bolts on the original stem was stripped when I tried to unscrew it. Is there any way to get it off since a hex key can't grab anything now to unscrew it and since it's recessed I can't use anything else to get it off. Thanks!

Hey I got the same exact riser and everything but I noticed even after tightening it, my stem still slides when I steer. Like the stem would move to the right. I tried alot of times
@TinkeringTurtle2 жыл бұрын
My best guess is that the riser is bottoming out on the top of the fork stem. You need to verify that you have around an 1/8” of clearance so when you tension the top bolt it takes up all the slop/looseness. (do not over tighten the top bolt)

Thank you for your informative videos. Hoping you can help. My Himiway is suffering an error code 30. When I perform the steps suggested on page 13 of the manual, no luck. No accident occurred, nothing like that. I was pedaling in first gear up a hill in PAS1 and the motor just stopped working. Had to pedal the bike 5 miles to get home. It was a good/tiring workout, and now hoping for an easy fix. I'm waiting for Himiway to respond, but in the meantime, can you help?
@TinkeringTurtle4 жыл бұрын
I haven’t had an error 30, so no first hand experience. I do know it’s a communication error. Which leads me to believe that somehow you may have loosened a connector. I would check all the connections you can get to. Be sure to pull them straight apart, DON’T twist. And push them straight together after you line up the small tabs inside. Be careful not to bend over the pins inside. Hope this helps!

The stock seat post is 30.4. I purchased a 27.2 to 30.4 shim. the stock seat post is 300mm I think. 350mm works fine.

Hi Tim I followed your instructions doing the same exact thing with the same components. However, when I went to put the handlebars on the cables were not long enough to reach. I had to install with only the adjustable riser. Any suggestions? Thanks
@TinkeringTurtle4 жыл бұрын
What cable wasn’t long enough? If it is the front brake cable, can you take it out of the cable bundle and allow it to move more freely? Can you reconfigure the cable bundle to allow things to move more? If your using the riser and the adjustable bike stem. Do you have the spacer configured the same way I did? Can you adjust the spacers to give the cables more length? Can you change the angle on the adjustable bike stem to give you enough cable length? There are quite a few small adjustments you can make and still get most of the benefits of the upgrade.

I took a closer look at your riser. I will try again. Thanks

Hi Tim, once again I took your advice. Everything seems ok. The riser I used has 5 spacers. I ended up using Himiway’s original 3 spacers, the the riser with 2 spacers, then the adjustable riser, then the last 3 spacers. Seems ok looks a little funny. Unfortunately I don’t know how to add a pic in KZbin comments. Thanks

I installed this on my Cruiser with the same configuration (riser and adjustable stem) with the same amount of spacers, and leaving the one to place on top for the right amount of compression, but when I pick up the front wheel to test it like you do in the video, the wheel doesn't move back and forth with the stem, as if it's not connected at all. The stem moves back and forth and I can move the fork and tire back and forth, but they don't move together. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I’m guessing yes, but you will need to pull the stem off and measure the steering tube to be sure of it. The handle bars are the same and the caps on the steering tube are the same. so I am fairly certain they would work.
