Hello, I want to see it with the front door closed. My issue is the air pocket between storm and front door prevents the storm from latching. I always have to keep the screen open even for just an inch so the air has a way to escape.
@AroundTheHome16 жыл бұрын
If your door has that good of a seal, it may not latch all the way without a way for the air to escape. These are pneumatic closers, not hydraulic. There is one thing that you can try. I had a similar problem with a different cause and different solution- perhaps it might help others. Door wouldn't close right- not catching. I tried filing as shown in this video but that didn't work. Then I thought that the moving part (I don't know the names of the parts) wasn't going far enough into the "rectangular thing". So, I thought that maybe if I raise the "thing" a bit- maybe it'll close correctly. Then I had to ponder what to put under the "thing" to raise it. Anything soft would get squeezed once I tightened the screws. So, I had some old credit cards. I cut one into little squares. I thought that maybe a thickness of 3 of those might be about the right distance to raise the "thing". So, put I 3 squares just above each of the 3 screws- then tightened them. Voila! Closes perfectly now! So, your solution didn't work for me- but thanks- because watching it got me to tackle the problem. I'm not particularly handy with home repairs except for very simple problems. I just have little experience. I wish when younger- those college years I worked summers in a paper mill- I should have worked with local tradesmen. I think 3 months with a carpenter- 3 with a plumber and 3 with an electrician- would have helped this old nerd!

Every spring my door starts scraping on the door jam. I imagine this is from snow and ice. How do I adjust the storm door so that it doesn't scrap the bottom of the door jam?
@AroundTheHome12 жыл бұрын
@Christy this is more commonly caused by the humidity in the air during the warm months. The wooden door jam swells slightly causing things like doors and windows to act differently. Is it only scraping on the bottom and more specifically where on the bottom?
@christyanderson81752 жыл бұрын
@@AroundTheHome1I'm sorry, It's not a wood door. It's a regular Larson type storm door that leads out to my patio. It's scraping on the bottom aluminum(ish) plating and doesn't swing open well. It makes a high-pitch scaping sound. How can I adjust it so it stops scraping and doesn't stick when I open it?
@AroundTheHome12 жыл бұрын
I know that your storm door isn't wood. I was referring to the wooden door jam that the storm door's frame is screwed to. But back to the problem at hand. Ok, so it is scraping on the bottom of the storm door. Is it scraping just on the latch side or fairly even across the whole bottom?
@christyanderson81752 жыл бұрын
@@AroundTheHome1 OK--So I went and examined the door more closely and the door is scraping across the top. My bad. I thought it was near the bottom. The door wont shut tightly without pulling it closed. When you open it, it scrapes and makes a high pitched scraping sound along the top of the door but more toward the 'door knob end' along the top of the door than the center or hinge end. Is it still the swelling of the wood the door jam is attached to that is causing the scraping? Is there any way to adjust it so it swings closed tightly without scraping?
@AroundTheHome12 жыл бұрын
I do believe it is the wood swelling. There is a reason that doors have extra gap that they don't need all year round to take care of this. But if the door is not square with the jam, when your house expands it will scrape. Now I am sorry to ask yet another question, but is it scraping on the side of the door at the top, or completely on the top. I need to know specifically or I will tell you the wrong way to fix it.

@AroundTheHome16 жыл бұрын
I think that I understand what you are saying. It is possible that the latch is broke or wore out. I would check to see if it is coming in contact with the strike plate first. The strike plate is on the jamb where the metal frame has the slot for the latch to go into. Is it lining up and is the latch entering the slot? Is it too high or too low, or maybe too far away?

I installed a new Larson storm door and it shuts good, the problem is that when it's latched there is about 1/8" of play between the latch and striker plate, the wind causes the door latch to bounce back and forth against the plate and it's noisy. I know I can put a piece of wood in the striker plate recess and take up the play but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do it or some kind of a kit?

They should provide little shims for the striker plate. Did you have those and they were not enough. To be honest, I don't know of a kit for that. Was the door easy to install with a beginner diy?
@AroundTheHome12 жыл бұрын
Well, I will be honest. The older ones were a pain in the butt to install. Not something that I would suggest to a beginner or even a mid level diy'er. Now the new Larson brand storm doors have made some very impressive updates on how they are installed and make it possible for a beginner diy'er. Now as long as your door jam is square, you should have no problems with the install. If it is not square, you will need to do some shimming and that does make it a little more of an intermediate diy'er project. Good luck and feel free to ask more questions.

Yea but does it latch when the inside door is closed?
@AroundTheHome1Ай бұрын
Well this one did, but not closing when the main door is closed could be a couple of different things. Let's first assume that the brackets were installed correctly and in the right position. The first thing I might check is if the door is catching or scraping anywhere on the jamb. Once that has been checked and the door is closing smoothly but can't latch when the main door is closed, then consider one of two things. If it has only a single closer, then install a second. Or if it has a standard pneumatic closer, install a heavy duty or two heavy duties. www.amazon.com/Wright-Products-V150WH-PNEUMATIC-CLOSER/dp/B0009YDHJ8?crid=3KBXQML6JQP45&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.w8twUkhLicC1ArPSvZ5zRZGGiq0FoQWYEVUXV1a_HEh2B4iXf7ct4_Goc9iBuPi0wY_1Olv5-3-QNvYhf0TsIVkuleRoy7EYU7hGFf0k06OeMMLipvh5v5e2Qe4ekJPd7tqq_qEdlMbSWZsTt3o5wpCZBsqgFXynoXv9N-4NX81g5h0POwzgm_t6SYz_xghPkaHpWp_JycJPrcBCVeq32SjtmOPUWz0EUM4Z3hQHeJ9iTlo8_22mGklHGDf_yXse9_hQg64d4AddRUGr-vvqyv9B-IyeixlX0_QtjQkRmUg.s1XA1eqMWOjCULuAFA5mB2r5_0Fa4OOlPdU6xgu3zjU&dib_tag=se&keywords=storm%2Bdoor%2Bcloser&qid=1732454112&sprefix=storm%2Bdoor%2Caps%2C177&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=c478f226f5ea83e5db605439c856113a&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl If that doesn't work or you already have that then make your door less air tight. Ok, I know which door that you have. I have installed a couple of those, but I do not own one so I am not as familiar with it's window as I should be. Is there a locking latch to catch the window, or is it supposed to stop wherever you stop moving it?
@asmith04125 жыл бұрын
Around The Home there is a locking latch to hold the top window in place, and it used to work. I’d lower the window to reveal the screen, and then raise the window to close it up, using the locking latch to hold it in place. But starting a few months ago, I’m not able to get the latch under the window. I’ve pushed the window up as I as it can go, but the latch won’t clear the window.

@kimrogers17503 жыл бұрын
@@AroundTheHome1 Hi. I wish it was that easy. Everything is tight. The latch is sitting on the frame on the right side. I have tighten all screws on the hinges, door frames, handle. It did not help. So I took the side frame off and tried positioning it more to the right and then that left too large of a gap between the door and frame, so water would get in and it looked bad. So I put it back. Now the door also is rubbing a little bit on the top right corner as well as the latch still resting on the frame. I probably need 2 mm and then the latch would hit correct so it could suppress and close properly. I also put 2 3-inch screws in the hinges to doorwall hoping that would pull it in but it didn't. The closing speed on the actuator is right also. I tried it at different settings and that didn't change anything.
@AroundTheHome13 жыл бұрын
Ah, now that's a lot more info. Yes, wish it was that easy. From what you are saying, the best that I can figure without being there is that the door is out of square with the frame. You say you need about 2mm for the latch to hit correctly. Can I assume that means that the storm door latch is 2mm low to properly enter the strike plate on the frame? If so then you need to change the shims on the hinge side. For instance, if the latch needs to go up, then you would add a small shim to the lower part of the hinge side. Maybe this helps, or maybe I misunderstood you.

Our door doesn't open all the way only 45 degrees, how can we fix that?
@AroundTheHome13 жыл бұрын
Well, without being there to see it, I'll tell you what it sounds like to me. And, that is a very small opening. These doors should upon almost 90 degrees, so you are saying that it opens only half way. I would first double check the closer to make sure it is opening all the way. I wouldn't want to suggest any door alterations before you could confirm that it's not just your closer. But after that it sounds like the closer was installed right in the first place. It sounds like the bracket on the door that attaches the closer was put too far away from the door jamb. If that is soo then it would need to be remounted closer. When I mount the closer, I normally pull it out about an inch to inch and a half then lock it. Then I put it up against the closed door and that is where I put the bracket. I hope that makes sense and I wish you luck on your project.

How do you fix a storm door that is SO difficult to push open?
@AroundTheHome12 жыл бұрын
I am assuming that when you say SO difficult to open that it is much harder to open then other storm doors just like it. Well it could be a couple of things. Your closer could be bad and just not letting you push it open right. Also, you could have too strong of a closer on it. If you have a full glass or mostly glass storm door then you should have a heavy duty closer on it. If it is a very light storm door with a thin aluminum frame and a small window then a regular closer should be used. But, it is more likely that the closer has gone bad and you just need to swap it out. And that is easy to do, because for the most part they are a universal part and all you have to do is take the pins out of the one that you have and put the new one in. Here is an Amazon link for some closers. Here is the heavy duty closer, which would be used on most newer doors. www.amazon.com/Wright-Products-V150WH-PNEUMATIC-CLOSER/dp/B0009YDHJ8?crid=115Q4MTT6RBB5&keywords=storm%2Bdoor%2Bcloser&qid=1655479128&sprefix=storm%2Bdoor%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-5&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=a5f8e2e718c4f4ef85f52f55871e039b&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl And then here is the standard opener www.amazon.com/Wright-Products-V820AWH-Pneumatic-Closer/dp/B000BD6EH4?crid=115Q4MTT6RBB5&keywords=storm%2Bdoor%2Bcloser&qid=1655479439&sprefix=storm%2Bdoor%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-6&th=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=5c47e7300d5b4239a1d109969fb77d27&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl Hope that helps.

@@AroundTheHome1 Yes. We have the same door on the front and it is fine. So strange. I have even measured the placement of the closers and they are the same.
@AroundTheHome12 жыл бұрын
@Barbara Bartling one more idea. And I am trying my best since I am not there. Since you have the same door on the front, why don't you for the heck of it take the closer / closers off the front door and put them on the back door. If it is still hard to open with the different closer, then at least we can cross that off the list. Right now I think we just have to go down the list and start eliminating things. If it is easier to open with the closers from the front door, then you got a defective closer. If it is still hard to open, then I would suggest next to take them off and see how hard it is to open with no closers on the door. If it is hard to open at all with no closers, then I would think that the hinges are binding. Let me know what you find out.

That's hard to try and describe. If the door is catching do to the changing of the seasons, then there is not enough clearance. It also depends if it is only catching at the top or bottom or if the whole side is catching. Put simply, the frame for the storm door needs to be adjusted to give more clearance. Possible, if it was installed with shims on one side, then it would need to be taken down and re-shimmed. Either way, it normally requires part of the frame to be taken down and re-adjusted. Trial and error. Turn it one way and if it makes it close faster than you like, adjust it the opposite direction. At least that’s what I would try. Good luck.

i have a situation where i'd like the storm door to open a bit wider. it's a new install Provia, and is at about 80-85 degrees. really need it to have a wider open range of around 90-95 degrees. any advice on accomplishing that? thanks
@AroundTheHome15 жыл бұрын
Not if you want to use the closers with it. Sorry, I don't know of any that will give a normal storm door with normal pneumatic closers that kind of opening range. I guess you could install a hydraulic closer like on commercial doors. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to stop by our website www.greatwhiteninja.com
@AroundTheHome15 жыл бұрын
I take back part of that. I do know of some doors that will open 90 degrees or more, but they normally don't close all the way on their own. You can re position the mount of the opener on the door to give it more swing room, but it will almost certainly not close all the way on it's own.

I think that I understand what you are saying. If the frame is square and true then there will be a small uniform gap all the way around. If you have a big gap at the top and it is making the door catch, then you need to reset the frame. It needs to be shimmed so that it can square and then the door will shut right. Can you tell me how to adjust the door. It it catching now at the top of the frame and not closing.
@AroundTheHome16 жыл бұрын
Well, that depends on how hard it is catching. The proper way to fix this is to take the frame loose on the opposite side and shim it. The top of the frame would need to move outward and the bottom of the frame needs to move inward. But assuming that it is just catching a little bit and the latch is still working fine then the easy way to fix it is just file or grind a little of the top edge of the door. Thanks for watching. I have the exact same door. Here is my question. When the door to the house is closed does the storm door still close and latch properly? Is it best to start with the adjustment screws all the way in on the upper and lower?
@AroundTheHome18 жыл бұрын
+ramroad2008 For the first part of your question, yes when the main house door is closed the storm door should close and latch properly. There are many variables to make sure that happens. First is of course that the closers are closing at the proper speed, but if any area of the frame is out of square then the door's closing ability will be effected. And for the second part of your question I normally start with the screws where the come from factory then work from there.

No my friend's bottom closer is stuck open.
@AroundTheHome18 жыл бұрын
I am assuming that it has a push button lock on it instead of the metal washer slide lock. If it has the push button then once it is locked you should have to only pull the door open a little to release the lock. If the door cannot open more then you might have to remove the closer and pull it upon outside of the door. It is also possible that the closer has broken and will not unlock. Luckily in either case all you have to do is remove the two pins to remove it and if you need a new one then you can buy a matching replacement and put it right back into place with the two pins that you removed.

Okay your tutorial worked but it affected the locking mechanism. The little piece that allows the screen door to stay open by itself does not work now.
@AroundTheHome14 жыл бұрын
I was just showing how to speed up / slow down your storm door closing speed. I'm not sure what you are referring to. Does your model storm door have a separate screen door, like a double door? The only screens on these that I am familiar with are screens that are built into the storm door and either have a sliding glass window that reveals a screen, or a roll away screen that rolls up into the top of the door as you pull the window up.

I didn't realize people put two on. I've broken a couple of closers on my heavy storm door, and have gotten pretty frustrated and just bungee corded the door open unless a storm is coming. I bought one heavy duty closer, but I think I'll go get a second one. That might do it.
