Adjusting electronic drum sensitivity, threshold and other useful playing parameters

Learning to set the playing parameters on an electronic drumkit is as important as learning to tune an acoustic one. Here I explain what each parameter does to help you set yours up so that it responds in the best way for your style of playing.

Thank you for this video! I have been playing a Roland TD10 kit for over 20 years. It was the floor model at Guitar Center, so all the sounds and kits had been modified before I bought it. There were 3 or 4 kits that I really liked just as they were, so I never bothered to learn much about how to made adjustments. Then the battery died and the module went back to the factory settings. I lost all those cool kits. I've been fumbling around to try to create a kit or two that I like. This video was incredibly helpful!

pranjay vaidya thank you! I’m glad you’re seeing a different side to eDrums. I don’t think you can sample into the Pearl ePro live (that is your kit right?) so you would need another sound source which you can trigger using your current set up. This means you would still play your eDrums as you do now but they would trigger and play another sound source that allows you to use samples, such as a computer running a DAW. By doing this you would then have access to a limitless number of samples such as cymbals, snares, toms, kick drums.... infact anything! I currently do not have sample packs available but I am considering it so I’ll keep you informed.

What about when I hit the Ride and Kick at the same time, sometimes the ride does not trigger. It-s not the pad because I've changed with the crash pad, still the problem to the ride. Any solution? Someone answered to a similar question: "My guess is that you're hitting the bass drum (hard) at exactly the same time as that ride cymbal at the end of the fill? If so, turn down the crosstalk rejection on the offending cymbal pads and you should be sorted." Is the XTalk the same because I don't have crosstalk on my Alesis Command module..

Great information ok the question is when I hit my number 2 tom it sounds like a slapping sound all the other Tom's sound right am using TD50kv2 I can't seem to find the right setting to get rid of this sound the perimeter are all the same were will I look for this setting my snare seems to have this same sound when it's hit harder not ghost note

OK, I have an issue with my 582k, overlapping midi notes on logic when I record. Any idea what I should do to sort this out? For example, the bass drum would have the correct amount of notes but the grid looks crazy and the notes overlap. Also tried to get the 502 touch app but it doesn't seem to be available any more?

Hi, these are wise words ... Actually you could play with the tension of the meshheads to make it feel right for you. The sensitivity is the scaling of the dependence: force hitting the head to a velocity 0 to 127. And so, to the articulation. I set it like that, that ONLY the hardest strokes I play deliver 127. That gives you more dynamics. Another important setting is the velocity curve. Really. That's not a scaling but a - let's say - fine tuning to get the right articulation for the played velocity. Some modules offer various math functions to map the input velocity to an output velocity, like linear, logarithmic, a spline curve etc. And that really makes another huge difference. If you need more info about scan time, hold or mask, decay etc. please just reply to that comment. Please take a look to Luke Oswald and his 3 lifestreams about Superior Drummer 3. In the first part he explained the proper setup of his module. This guy is another edrum crack on KZbin.

I've gotta Roland TD8 module with my Millenium MPS 400 mesh head (modded) kit. I'm luving it! However, what can I do to stop a tom pad (left side triggering) when hitting other pads (even the cymbals, hi hat, ride an crash. Tried changing sensitivity, threshold, an cross talk settings, but it didn't solve it. Anyone?

Excellent tutorial. Are you saying that these parameters have to be customized on the module no matter that a vst drums have a preset for that drum ?

Hi Hansel, the way you play is unique to you. Your touch, your feel. It may be similar to a preset and so that prest may work well for you but it's not set up specifically for you. If the set up is comforatble then great, no need for any adjustments but if it's not then yes, you should dive in and make some changes.

I just got a td30 and I'm finding that it's hard to set sensitivity properly because it will fire randomly loud notes that I hit with the same force...any ideas to fix that?😅 I'm aware that hitting centre could cause louder hits, but I'm not sure it's purely that... It's annoying... I'll try to play to songs but I don't hear my snare cutting through as i'd expect , and those u do hear are the weird maxed out hits...

Hi Heather, thanks for checking the video out. Without playing the drum myself and viewing the modules settings it's quite difficult to know what to suggest to help you, but I'll have ago! Try turning your sensitivity up fully first of all and play, see if you're getting a consistent volume that way, whether playing soft or hard. There should be no quieter or louder hits. If that's the case then slowly begin to bring the sensitivity down and see if you notice when you play softer the sound is quieter and when harder, the sound is louder. If you play harder and the sound is quieter then you may need to look at the set up of the pads zones. I don't use Roland so I'm not familiar with how their modules deal with this but I would hope the manual would shed some light on the matter, if indeed that's what's needed. Like I say without trying it myself I'm not sure but this is where I'd start. Good luck and let me know how you get on. Best, Bid.

So....buying speakers all depends on your budget and the space where you're playing/practicing. How much noise can you make? There are so many great solutions now available, whether it's in ear monitoring, regular headphones or speakers from soooo many brands. Without knowing these circumstances it's very difficult to recommend. But to give you a few ideas have a look at some JBL monitors, or Roland, Mackie or if you have a bigger budget TurboSound's IP range which really would give you that sonic range you mention. Another avenue you may like to explore are the in ear monitors and once you get used to them (which you will) they're great. Shure do the SE range that start around £75.

I’m not with my kit at the moment so I wouldn’t be able to tell you my settings off the top of my head. I’ll let you know when I am however try the preset settings which come with the kit and then edit them accordingly. That’s always a good place to start.

Hi there. Awesome vid. Helps a lot. I have an issue. My drummer plays Roland TM6 and uses side stick and rim shot. He never uses centre for snare. The problem is that when he hits rim shot all I get is side stick. How can I resolve this problem. Otherwise it means that I can’t use the snare trigger. Thanks for your help.

Hi Calvin, sorry for the delay in the response. Well the obvious answer for this is for your drummer to change his technique for the electronic kit and play the centre snare rather than the rim. And it's easy for him to see why if you and everyone else are not hearing what you should be right?

Hi Pedro, I'm not really that knowledgable with Roland kits however, I've just googled your problem and found this answer. "You can turn the ambience off by pressing [Kit], pressing [F3 (FX SW)] and then pushing the button under “Ambience”. You can also turn the compressor, EQ, and effects on or off in this same manner." I have a Yamaha DTX Multi 12. It doesn't trigger the softest notes but the Velocity Limit is set to 0-127. Is this just how this pad is? When I play soft eight notes on the ride, every few notes played one sound is skipped...

Hi, make sure your sensitivity and threshold parameters are adjusted as well as the velocity limiter. The pad should respond to the soft notes better.

Hi Ash, are you sure the sound is being recorded through your iRig and NOT your phone? I've witnessed someone using an iRig thinking that it was recording fine when actually the phone was still using its internal mic. This could cause the volume to alter due to the mics compression settings.

@@ashcurt66 if you plug the iRig into your phone and press record, if you speak in the room then you should not be able to hear your voice. If you can then the internal mic of the phone is still being used and not the iRig.

Hi, I was really hoping to find an answer to my question in your video but alas no - however, I'm asking here in case you might have seen this issue before. I play a Roland TD-20 and recently added 2 items as AUX. A Roland BT-1 bar, and a Roland PD-8 black rubber pad. I'm having a very strange issue that seems to be common to playing both! Whenever I strike at a low-to-medium velocity, these units trigger the HEAD sound despite playing the RIM. I can only get the RIM sound to be heard if I strike with very high velocity. It makes no sense to me that the "trigger zone" being registered by the module would change according to velocity. Any ideas on what I could check/adjust? (Unfortunately, Roland doesn't seem to provide support except thru a Tribes forum, where you're lucky to get a reply within a week.)

Hi Alain, firstly I don't use Roland so I'm not sure how their modules are programmed however, tech is tech so I do have an idea of what's going on with your set up. If both your 2 aux units are playing different sounds depending on the velocity you strike them with then it says to me that there is something inside the TD-20 that is telling those inputs to do so. Let's say you have your Roland BT-1 bar plugged into trigger input 13 (this is just for explanation) of your TD-20. Go into the menu of the module and look at everything that is related to that input especially velocities, velocity curves, voices assigned to it etc.... There will be a setting which is telling the device to play a different sound, or even trigger once it goes over a certain velocity threshold. Are the sounds that are being generated also on any other pad? This is where I'd start to look. It's all about the TD-20 and how that operates so you really need to dive into it and get a better understanding of how it works. Frustrating I know BUT once you do it will open up soooo many more opportunities for your playing and your creativity. Does this help? Let me know how you get on.

Well, your video DID put me on the right path...meaning I think I need to start from zero and adjust the whole kit for my playing style, as per your recommendation in the video. I noticed that I was able to make ALOT of improvement to the situation of the PD-8 by playing around with Sensitivity, Threshold, and Curve settings. (Roland doesn't even mention what settings to use for my TD-20 module in the leaflet, but clearly setting it to PD-8 was far from making it plug and play. Looks like I need to go beyond that and adjust the above parameters for both the head and the rim triggers!) QUESTION 1: Do you advise doing all that BEFORE starting to use VST drums (aka Superior Drummer)? In other words, get your kit to respond correctly on its own FIRST, and it should offer a better experience once hooked up to Superior Drummer? QUESTION 2: Roland included a stereo cable with the BT-1 but this is a single-trigger bar. I had a mono cable lying around so I decided to try it and lo and behold, the BT-1 works nice - it's only triggering the head sensor and I am able to adjust Sensitivity, Threshold, and Curve for the pad. Yet, they clearly say in their scarce documentation to not use a mono cable as it won't work properly. Well, using a mono cable solved my triggering problems. Go figure... The only issue I have now is crosstalk between the bar and the snare that it is mounted to. So my question is why would someone use or provide a stereo cable with a single-trigger pad? I thought stereo cables were for connecting to a dual-trigger pad....

SO Q.1 - Yes, I would recommend getting your kit to play and feel the best you can before hooking up to any VST as then you're at a good starting point when you do. Q. 2 - I'm not sure why Roland have specified a stereo lead. But you also mention something about the threshold maybe being too low on the pad thats misfiring - is this correct? Well, despite my BT1 bar (mounted to my snare pad) having a good response now on its own - I just can't seem to eliminate the cross talk happening in ONE direction only - the BT1 bar keeps misfiring when i hit the snare (especially the middle, or the rim). ARGH.. this product is plenty advertised as mounted to the snare pad but I honestly dont know what more I can tweak to make it playable. Any ideas to resolve this particular issue (other than mount it on its own stand)? I've assigned them to the same XTALK CANCEL group AND I've set the amount to MAX on both!

@@alainpatry Yes that's correct, if the threshold is set to low on a pad it may be causing that pad to be triggered when striking others - as well as crosstalk. And yes the sensitivity is the volume at which the pad/trigger responds to the strike. The BT-1 settings are what you should be looking at, not the snare. Make sure the Threshold is set so as not to let any unwanted strikes (or vibrations) register. Again as I'm not familiar with Roland I'm unsure how their module works however, you've mentioned crosstalk so on the BT-1 trigger input make sure the snare drum is selected as the source of cross talk and adjust this value until you don't hear when striking the snare pad. If this doesn't eliminate the problem then we need to look elsewhere.

I have the cheapie Donner ded-200 electronic kit and no matter what I do I can't get the bass drum right. The issue is that the beater bounce back always registers that second hit on the kick drum. I've raised my threshold but then I have to kick the pad much harder to register a hit and this disturbs my neighbors. Any suggestions? Also for pad sensitivity, my module only offers settings 1 - 3. This is not really sufficient for fine-tuning the sensitivity of my snare pad. Any suggestions on maybe other settings are other techniques I could use to fine-tune the sensitivity of my snare? Lastly can you please talk about retrigger?

Hi Michael, I've not heard of the Donner brand but regardless welcome to the eDrum family! The beater bounce back? I'm not sure what you mean by this but if when you play the kick drum your beater is striking the pad twice , once on the initial strike and then again as the beater returns. A lot of players do this on acoustic kits as it's a really quiet second strike however, on an elctronic kit it becomes very audible! if this is the case then you should look at your technique especially if yiu've played around with threshold levels. If there are only 3 settings for sensitivity then unfortunately there's little more you can do that I know of. Maybe if anyone else has any ideas they could share them? And re-trigger? What do you mean by this? When you get that double trigger, like you're experiencing from your kick drum? Or when you'd like to re-trigger a sample and have it start from the beginning each time?

When I say retrigger, I mean that's literally the name of one of the sensitivity settings in my module. It's right there alongside threshold, crosstalk, etc. But whenever I Google it I get nothing but results for actual physical drum triggers. What I'm talking about is an actual setting and I dont know what it does.

@@mmuller1022 Ah ok.....in that case that re-trigger parameter maybe exactly what you need to solve your double trigger problem! Try adjusting it while you're playing the kick and see if you can eliminate the "bounce back". As I mentioned I'm not familiar at all with the Donner brand and didn't think to ask if you had any more parameters to play with. I'd imagine this could well solve your issue. Good luck!

Hi there, congratulations on getting the DTX900. It's a great kit! As for the pads being quiet I haven't come across this issue myself. I would suggest checking the set up of those pads against the set up of the pads whose volume you're happy with. And when I say check them I mean check everything. There will be something different between them abd you'll have to find out what. It's a pain in the ass to do it but it will also get you to explore the module and you'll learn soooo much. Sorry I can't be of any more assistance in this but I hope what I've suggested makes sense and helps you. If I do come across anything that I think maybe the cause I'll let you know. @@bid111 Thanks for the reply. The snare setting is sensitivity 5, threshold 0, & curve linear. The tom is sensitivity 5, threshold 2, & curve linear. I don't know what the threshold was set to, before re-adjusting it on the snare, but it was a great improvement going down to 0. At the same time though, I don't know why no matter how light I hit the tom, I get sound in the center or sides of the head, while if I hit the snare light enough I can get it where there's no sound, especially at the sides. Like I can do a soft roll at the sides of the pad & just hear the tennis racket sound, not triggering the brain etc. I'm hoping & looking for the tom response on the snare. The tom is like a real drum, where as no matter how soft I hit it, it produces a sound. Thanks much!!

Are you sure the cables are in the correct trigger outputs and you're adjusting the right parameters for that pad? It's a very obvious question but I've been caught out myself thinking I'm adjusting a pads parameters only to later find out I wasn't changing the right pad.

@@bid111 No, they're the right pads. It seems as though my snare which is the larger pad from the TD12 line, doesn't respond as well as the smaller tom pads. Like I mentioned there was great improvement by lowering the threshold, but it's not perfect. I should mention that I did switch the input chords so that I was playing the snare sound through the tom for a bit, & the tom pad did allow for a more sensitive roll etc. Again thanks much as I probably had the threshold set to around 8 or 10 on the snare pad, ( I didn't jot it down), & it was quite bad at that setting. There's great improvement pulling it all the way down to zero.

We are have an issue at our church with our Roland V-Drums, TD-27 module. We can't get the high hat to make an open or closed sound. It is stuck sounding halfway open. We believe that it's not the wiring harness, but a setting in the TD-27. Please help! :)

We haven't figured it out. The church's drummer is stumped. He replaced the wiring harness and the plastic mechanism that senses if the HH is open or closed. It may be a setting.

I can’t guarantee it’s the same on your TD-27, but on my TD20, Select the Hi-Hat instrument, then use the Trigger button (Top LH ish on the module) to access and adjust the ‘Offset’ & ‘Foot Splash’ sensitivity settings. Good luck and take care.

Thanks, I feel like I have been spinning my wheels trying to get my dm10 dialed in. Do you have a video on the velocity/decay; filter; level; pitch settings? It's mainly the kick that has me in a rage against the machine mood. It's like fuck you I won't do what you tell me.
