What will it be that causes the Talosians to expend the non-trivial effort required to give Pike a convincing and pleasant experience after being stuck in the wheelchare going BEEP BEEP as a means of communication? (Which doesn't play well, considering that we have more sophisticated means of communication for people today who are just as completely crippled, such as Stephen Hawking's voice computer.) How did Pike get into such good standing with the Talosians that they'd create and sustain such a detailed and convincing simulation for his mind to live in? @WimpyKelv122 жыл бұрын
@@Melkur1981 It looks so 'wrong' because they kept coming back to the older designs year after year but suddenly it's all different now. A lot of it is a bit over-redesigned considering Enterprise (and some fanfilms) proved that the old sets can all look shockingly modern due to modern cinematography and lighting. If they need to change stuff to suit modern standards (which they don't necessarily have to do all the time due to Star Trek not quite being our future and thus the technology developed differently), they should be careful to keep the 'skeleton' (so it looks like the same thing) but add small panels and textures that simply tweaks things. The communicators and phasers and tricorders do this pretty well. Discovery kinda got away with its changes due to it showing ships we didn't see before (thus we can't say something looks wrong as there's nothing to compare it to) but once they showed the Enterprise it kinda gets weird because it all looks so different. I also have to wonder if tweaking the maroon uniforms is actually necessary, it looks nice sure but does it really need to look more like past Pike's uniform? Uniforms can change. That's one of the things that had all of us talking about it in schoolyards. All the cool tech it showed us. A lot of those kids actually became NASA engineers and scientists because of it. It inspired them to think ahead. This is 2022. Trying to make things look like a future envisioned by 1960s designers doesn't do the same for us today. Those fan films don't look like the future. Captain Pike tries reason and diplomacy, but the Romulans respect strength and self-sacrifice. Kirk chased the Romulan Warbird into the Neutral Zone and the Captain of the Warbird died with honor. Pike convinced the Romulan Captain to consider peace, which made him a dishonorable traitor in the eyes of Romulan High Command. Kirk showed strength, and through destroying his ship, the Romulan Captain showed self-sacrifice. The Romulans felt they had dealt a strong blow, but also felt the Federation was strong enough to counter any deeper moves, and backed off. Pike showed an ability to subvert an experienced Romulan Captain with a short conversation, which likely scared the f__k out of the Romulan High Command and convinced them that the Federation posed a threat requiring them to be wiped out entirely, before their talent for subversion could cause dissension in the ranks. Basically, Pike did what Picard might have tried to do in his place, in an era where the cowboy tactics Kirk favored where actually the better option.

What’s never said is what future Pike is giving up by restoring the timeline. We see he’s an admiral, but maybe he also got married and had a family. I do like that this episode is more in line with City of the Edge of Forever, Yesterday’s Enterprise, and Tapestry than Voyager’s Endgame. The first three all involve restoring the original timeline. But Voyager’s ending is Janeway risking the future to get her ship home sooner. Not only did SNW offer a great episode that makes me like Pike even more, it also made me dislike Voyager and Janeway more than I already did.

He gets married and has a family in his actual fate. That's the Irony of Pikes story. He's constantly terrified of this fate worse than death he's doomed to but what actually happens is he goes off to live in paradise with a woman he loves. If he just lets go, and gives in to fate, everything works out fine. Janeway also cripples the Borg and saves the lives of trillions but hey, who's counting.

As a writer myself (I have written and had--traditionally published--an alternate history novel) the writing on any series is always something important to me. For the most part I enjoyed this episode very much and thought the writing quite good, but there is an aspect of it that has bothered me: If seeing the future provides Pike with information that consequently informs his decisions regarding the letters to the cadets (which is to say, deciding NOT to write to them and apprise them of their fates), why wouldn't that same knowledge of the future likewise be employed to simply subvert those decisions he made in his (brief) look at his command during the encounter with the Romulans? He has seen the result of his choices during that incident, so knowing that, surely he could simply make different choices. The writers seem to indicate that no matter how Pike plays it, any scenario in which he and the cadets are spared their tragic fates results in disaster for the galaxy. But the suggestion therein is that this (the fate of the cadets and Pike in the reactor incident) is the focal point of that future history. That, however, seems almost deus ex machina, in the sense that the real turning point in the galaxy's fate might more arguably be the encounter with the Romulans; it's there where everything seems to go awry. So in now having knowledge of how that incident plays out, why would Pike not simply be able to make the same decisions as Kirk (hunting down and destroying the Romulan warbird) and thus prevent the endless war that kills millions (should he, of course, make choices regarding his and the cadets' fates that lead to him commanding the Enterprise in the future)? There's also a paradox here, because if Pike makes the choice to allow his and the cadets' fates play out as they supposedly should, then how do we get to a future where an unmaimed Pike must come back to prevent himself from making the wrong choices? This is something I've often found a weak point in many SF scenarios involving time travel. Writing a good time travel tale that doesn't involve paradoxes is difficult, though often those paradoxes are either outright ignored, obliquely referred to as mind-bending, dealt with using some variation of the many world/multiverse concept, or avoided through the use of deus ex machina. Even Harlan Ellison's fine CITY ON THE EDGE OF FOREVER requires an element of the latter in order to allow Kirk and Spock to travel back in time to prevent McCoy from altering the past. Regardless of all this, when it comes to the writing, SNW is far and away better (in my opinion) than either ST:DISCOVERY or ST:PICARD. For me, this is possibly the best Trek since I watched the original series back when it first aired in the 60s. It may not be able to have the same cultural and societal impact the original series had, but it is a stellar show, with a great cast, tremendous production values, visually stunning cinematic effects and sets, and a tone that better reflects TOS than any of the other Treks oeuvres (including TNG). I anxiously await season two.

Future Pike does say at the end that if he tries other ways of changing his fate Spock will end up hurt In every version of the timeline except the real one.
@Helbore2 жыл бұрын
Pike knows that his decisions in that battle fail. He doesn't necessarily know the correct decisions to make, though. Just knowing that he should go after the Bird of Prey isn't enough. If he does and ends up getting the Enterprise destroyed, then that could still lead to decades of war with the Romulans. There's also a lot more that is potentially at stake beyond "Balance of Terror." The episode already makes a point about Spock's importance to future events, but what about Kirk? Considering Kirk's five-year mission is something that was supposed to go down in history as one of the most legendary in Starfleet's history and how much of a hero he became to other Captains down the line, just removing Kirk from the Enterprise could have dozens of negative effects. Then there's all the officers Kirk clearly brought on board like McCoy and Sulu, who have important parts to play in the future and may not if they're never brought to the Enterprise. The point being that Pike got to see an example of why changing the future would be detrimental. It would be foolhardy of him if he took the message to be "try and make a different change to the timeline," instead of "don't fuck with the established order of time." The lesson he learns is not specific to the one altered timeline he witnessed, but that trying to make alterations - no matter how good the reason - can lead to far worse consequences. So yeah, he could take the foreknowledge as a chance to try and change things for the better - but that was exactly what he was already doing that led to that mess in the first place.

This was just a convenient way to wrap up pikes story arc. Because the show runners wanted it wrapped up. Of course it doesnt make any sense. Like the original guys post pointed out The show runners know the fans are all too happy to shove a round hole into a square peg, for them. They don't have to do a lot of work , they just put it out there, and be silent. The gorn for example was a terrible retcon idea. Some fans however will defend it to the death. Not really: as depicted in Discovery, those time crystals are tricky things. Not even the Chancellor has authority over the planet where they're from. In Discovery, Pike made a deal with the monks that look after them to get one, but the monk warned him that the future he saw when he touched it would be set in stone if he took the crystal. It showed him his disfigured fate, but he accepted it. The effects of touching that first time crystal are what triggered his visions and obsession with changing his fate throughout SNW. But actually USING THEM to time travel??? Almost impossible: Michael Burnham's parents harnessed the power of a supernova to charge it. Discovery used a process developed by an alien princess and even so, that was going to burn out the crystal and make it a one way trip.

You think with CGI they could have made the actor look more like William Shatner. And why is Cpt. Pike talking to the Klingons ? Kirk was having problems with them all the time, hence he was the best “Space Sheriff” in Starfleet !!!
@ThatElfNerd2 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a 3D artist, CGI is a very tricky, and hard to accomplish feat to get looking great. It's why Disney, despite having all their de-aging effects, haven't made a Star Wars series focused on Luke, Leai and Han that takes place between episodes 6 and 7. The technology can only work for a few short scenes, and even then, depending on the footage they have available for that, it's very hit and miss. In TOS, the lighting and camerawork they had for filming is different than the camerawork and lighting they use now. Not to mention that it's grainier, and harder to pull a picture-perfect re-creation. Any CGI they'd do to change Paul Wesley to look like young William Shatner would instantly look fake. Especially the longer you'd have to look at it. An entire show where a character's CGI? the cracks in the art will show more and more. Not to mention the astronomical costs of paying artists around the clock to make all these new actors look like other actors for the sake of fan nostaligia, and the show will blow their budget to the point that they won't even be able to make new sets or have grand finale space battles.

@@patrickschulz2193 Viacom do, but Secret Hideout do not. Their contract is under a different license. I am not going by KZbin, but practical knowledge for when the merger occurred. When that occurred the contract was still under a different license and extended as such. For the 50th they couldn’t reproduce or get extended footage of 9 as the BBC would have to pay royalties for the image rights. Similar but slightly more complicated issue here. I actually see differences which could negate some issues around using canon designs
@DS9TREK2 жыл бұрын
@@matthewmcnerlin231 the BBC would've needed to pay to reuse Eccleston's image cos there's an agreement with the trade union, Equity, that TV channels have to pay actors to reuse old scenes in new productions, so that the BBC can't get around paying actors. Paramount owns the copyright to the uniform, Paramount is also the primary studio producing SNW through its wholly owned subsidiary, CBS Studios. Why would Paramount waste money and paperwork paying itself to use something it owns?
@matthewmcnerlin2312 жыл бұрын
@@DS9TREK unfortunately, it is not as simple as that. I cannot go into how I know specifics but what I while say and I’m simple legal terms is that this stems to when the rights of ST were split. The contract that the production company has is not for the entirety of the canon shows it is ‘part licence’ for a lack of a better term. They can use aspects but they have to pay to the original copyright holders - doesn’t help that through the years ST has changed ownership too. This is why things are different and not quite right, and why most of the shows are based in the ‘TOS’ years. I am not sure about the specifics about Picard, but one would say that they have probably lost a ton of money for that show. This is a mixture of extremely complex contract and IP law. Further, you are touching the surface with DW, but unless you have a working knowledge of IP and other relatable areas of law it is nothing more than that. While the BBC broadcasts the show, Chris also had a contractual right over his image. Image rights are other complex area. I once wrote a paper on how to create a new set of property rights on image but that’s a side point. Also love the username. DS9 is the best

@WarGrowlmon18 Жыл бұрын
The reason that all of this got included in the shows is that this is LITERALLY Christopher Pike's canon fate: he's horribly disfigured in that accident. TOS has a 2 part episode covering the aftermath of that. In the end, Spock arranges for Pike to settle on that planet with the telepathic aliens, Talos 4. Remember the ones who helped Spock when his memory got screwed up??? Well, they're able to give Pike a comfy life using their illusion powers so to him it seems like he's back to normal again and he lives out the rest of his life with the woman who helped Burnham and Spock when they went there. Pike met and fell in love with her on a mission in the original pilot episode TOS.
