Paul Simon - The Boxer (with Bob Weir) - San Francisco, Live, Outside Lands 2019, Sun. 8-11-19, Golden Gate Park, 1st row. Paul: We've been friends ever since (1967). But actually, this is our first duet!
Other Tidbits:
Paul Simon retired from touring last year, but he remained open to one-off performances to benefit causes that mean a lot to him. For OSL, Paul chose the San Francisco Parks Alliance and Friends of the Urban Forest. Paul also performed A Very Special Outside Lands Pop-Up Show 2 nights earlier at the Fox Theater in Oakland. The last time he performed in the SF Bay Area was last year for the Homeward Bound - The Farewell Tour at Oracle Arena. Everybody was excited to see him (again!).
Simon: Well I have an old friend who is coming out to join me tonight... I met him in 1967... I was coming up to the Haight-Ashbury to invite The Grateful Dead to join the Monterey Pop Festival. I knocked on the door of their house, and Bob Weir opened the door... and we've been friends ever since! But actually, this is our first duet!

@David Wang Not true at all. AG wanted to continue making movies back then and then come back for 6 months and make records with PS..., that didn't work for PS, understandably so. That is why the split happened. AG had a beautiful voice, but PS gave him the songs to showcase that beautiful voice. Without PS, there never would have been an AG, except in his local church. BUT, I grew up with S&G and will forever be grateful for them both. 💜💜

Yes, me too... In the eighties and nineties I saw many bands two or three times, like Rush, Pink Floyd, U2, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sublime, Yes, Genesis, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Guns N Roses, and Van Halen (to name a few :-) I saw the Grateful Dead 26 times (including the concert for Bill Graham at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park) that period while Jerry was still with us... But I always marveled at the way Bob would take over a song either with his voice or his incredible rhythm guitar/sometimes lead guitar, while Jerry just sat back and kept the beat!!

"The Boxer" is a timeless, iconic masterpiece that was never able to be captured live as it was on record. the harmonies, the build-up and the production of that song and it's "New Yorkness" has never left me not feeling goosebumps. It's on my "Ten Desert Island Discs". this certainly isn't a great version of it, but hey....no one stays young forever.

@@andrewt3417 I love Bobby and I LOVE the Grateful Dead. That being said Bobby has always been way erratic in his playing. Bobby on Europe '72-genius. This clip? Bobby is playing his own song and the band doesn't know where he is. Bobby and Mickey have always been on their own musical planet. I'm not hating, I'm just saying that after playing with Jerry for 30 years a little more musicality should have rubbed off.
