This was Prince’s response to being snubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 100 guitarists. He certainly proved his point here. And the strutting off stage at the end. Priceless.

Prince didn’t do this in rehearsal. That’s why he kept looking at Petty to see if it was okay to keep going. Petty was happy to oblige and keep singing the chorus while Prince had his moment.

So overall I would say here and there , I would hear derogatory statements made about anartist named Prince. So I had to go see for myself which I did and I thought he was outstanding 💥💯💥. So that's the unfortunate part of the story. I hope I cleared that matter up for you, and now he's gone 🙏 Today everyone says what a great musical genius he was. @@davidleslie1127 I'm not sure if the other guys got to hear this in rehearsal. If I remember the story correctly, Prince was supposed to do a solo midway through the song, but during rehearsal another musician up and decided he himself was going to play all the solos himself and Prince just kind of went along with it. There wasn't going to be another chance for a rehearsal with Prince so the director had a talk with him about what was going to happen and Prince basically told him not to worry about it, that he'll come in at the very end and to just let the other guy do whatever. That's why when he starts his solo during the actual show, he bursts out of nowhere and at times it's almost like he's mocking the other guy. But pretty much leading up to that, only Prince knew what he was going to do.

That was a claa act on his part. In 1983 i saw a part of the ARMS concerts for Ronnie Lane. 1st set had watts. Cocker. Clapton and Beck. Never new about becks music. Him and clapton went back an forth with the lead. 2d set was page. Paul brown an a heavy metal set. Ok. Then 3rd set all came out did 4 yardbirds songs. Then went into cream classics. White room. Crossroads. Strange brew. Tales of brave ullysses. I feel free. Page was a bystander. Clapton and Beck were impressive with their back an forth lead playing. 40 years ago. @@meagainokay7673 It is easy to go long with popular opinion here. I think Prince was a very good lead guitarist, not great like Hendrix who shaped a style some of which can be heard in Prince's solo. I am not sure if you play guitar or not, I do. I can tell you that it is hard to drop in like he did and perform well. All I ever wanted to be was a lead guitarist because it is possibly the best example of living in the moment and making it mean something. It is what jamming is all about and I appreciate his ability and willingness to do so on a big stage. He in many ways embodied live performance by "real musicians' as he put it no matter the outcome. The break has a few very good moments and mostly is fitting to the song, like starting around 5:06. It is not the best lead break ever however and I know if he were here today he would say the same thing.
@songshineoriginalmusic
@songshineoriginalmusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@meagainokay7673 Appreciate the link. If pull offs and arpeggios that never end is your thing then I guess it is okay. There are really two distinct lead playing styles out there: Ones that show off a player's proficiency and others that are from the heart. I prefer the latter. Not to say his lead break is bad. Note that he plays the same licks over at times however. No matter the complication, this a very taboo thing to do on a lead break. But even Prince does the same thing in places. So a technically proficient solo that lacks heart on a song that demands it is my take. I am not terribly impressed with either and I think I can do just as good or better in a particular moment, not to sound egotistical.

So much so, it makes me wonder what the original would've sounded like if Hendrix had played on it.

I love how Prince didn't show up to practice, stood back through half the song then suddenly took over the guitar solo, stole the show, then threw his guitar up and strutted off the stage. It was his middle finger to the rock world for always snubbing him as one of the greatest guitarists in history. They didn't snub his guitar playing after that performance which to this day is considered one of the greatest guitar performances in history!!

Prince did show up to practice and Marc Mann, a studio musician who worked with Jeff Lynne, stepped on the first solo of two set aside for Prince 1:57 because it was his only shot doing anything anyone would ever see on a large stage. Prince evidently was non plussed by somebody attempting to upstage him and said he would just take the outro solo and just waited for his solo live to let everyone know who they were actually playing with 3:29. @@Jon7athanStudios so long story short, Prince saw someone upstaging him then said "hold my beer"

Prince was truly a master of the guitar. His technical precision was awe-inspiring, whether it’s intricate fingerpicking, lightning-fast solos, or complex chord progressions. Beyond the technique, his ability to convey raw emotion through his playing is what sets him apart-every note seems to tell a story. Prince had a unique style that blends with Rock music , making his solos instantly recognizable and deeply impactful. Watching or listening to Prince play is a reminder of what true artistry sounds like.

So glad Prince got to gift this performance to the world before he passed. What a prodigy.
