The lyrics beautifully depict the inner turmoil and split psyche (good catch ange about her playing 2 characters) of the main character Kaneki from the anime Tokyo Ghoul - probably one of the most tragic and tortured MCs there are which you can imagine just from this song alone lol. Also idk if you've already been told this but Ado isn't actually the original artist, but this features on her first cover album and she more than did the original justice. The TG manga is one of my all time favourites but unfortunately the anime adaption for it was butchered. You still might find the first 2 seasons worth watching tho.

The way her singing furiously rides the line between anger and sorrow. Even without understanding the lyrics, you can feel the emotion and overall message of the song. I had heard and loved the Tokyo Ghoul version. But this version is even better. I will be exploring Ado's whole catalog now.

To me, Ado is one of the biggest vocal talents alive right now. She is self taught and did not have professional vocal teaching, her innate control is absolutely insane. She is able to brute force through her range like it's nothing, professionals would never do that to protect their vocal chords. However, she manages to do it and shows an outstanding combination of power, control, range, and emotion.

this song is amazing and ADO covering this, absolutely massive. She sounds live almost the same as in the studio version and that is so impressive! A lot of japanese artists do so actually and YES, thank you Ange for mentioning that japanese concerts are a league of their own - i've been to 2 and it was the best experience ever! If you have the chance to, please go to a concert in Japan. I think you would love Coldrain as well - it is a japanese rock band known for doing anime opening songs as well. Very good reaction This song is also one of the songs in her first cover album "What song do you want her to sing" as a theme Recruit from the audience The Live version appeared earlier than the studio version. At that time, Ado was holding a concert tour in Japan, and because of the popularity and difficulty of this song, the audience was so excited when the music started. As you heard, she added more emotional changes to the Live version. For example, one of the lyrics is "I hold my breath" and Ado really stopped breathing literally 8:27 (and so did the tone of freeze 8:37). Attack on Titan may be the anime that brought the hobby into the mainstream, but Tokyo Ghoul's Unravel was the ANTHEM of the weebs back in the days. It's extremely popular and inescapable when you were a fan back during those times. The theme of both anime's are really similar, but personally Tokyo Ghoul's version depicts the tragedy of an "unfair world" mucy more beautifully. As for recommending it as an anime, it's pretty subpar, like an "ok" level of good only. A lot of the subtleties in the manga was removed in the anime, sometimes even totally reversing what the meanings are. The plot is there, and the context you will understand for sure, but well... it is what it is XD
