I remember those days. Now with the newer versions of Illustrator you can put gradients on strokes. Do a thick line the same shape as the pipe and put a gradient on it. Massively cuts the time down.

what about some assimetric objects like pixellogo.com/pages/3d-logo-maker ...if circle would follow the same path of gradient as here on tutorial ? Please save my nerves..

the video is a little slow and hes showing us what doesnt work first which can be confusing for our memory when trying to remember how to do it correctly. its not necessary for us to know what doesnt work.
