I am a baby Boomer born in 1955... I was in third grade when JFK was killed, I was 13 when Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy senior were both killed.... After all these years I still get tears in my eyes listening to this song and what it represents....😢❤

I remember sitting at my desk in my 3rd grade classroom, and the phone on the wall, which was connected to the main office, rang. Mrs. Mundy answered it, spoke a few words, hung up, turned to us, and said "The president has just been shot. The busses are coming to take you home early today." When I got home my mother was crying and crying.

The song actually references four great figures in our history, the fourth was Bobby Kennedy. If you listen to the entire unedited song, the last verse says "anybody here seen my old friend Bobby? Can you tell me where he's gone? I thought I saw him walking, up over that hill, with Abraham, Martin, and John".

I was 11 when JFK was assassinated Never forget I was in Catholic school and we returned to the classroom after lunch break. A knock on the door. A girl with a message. Our teacher, a nun, took the message and with tears in her eyes explained what had happened. And that school is immediately dismissed. I ran home in fear.

Dion is not a group. He is one guy. I was born in 1960 and every time I hear this I start crying. I was 3 when Kennedy was killed and my dad died the same year as MLK and JFK. It was the saddest and still is, of my life.

Adogg, Dion DiMucci was one guy, 'Dion'. Most of his hits were in the 1950s and 1960s with the Belmonts and the Del-Satins, but he changed his style in the later 1960s and started recording more mellow songs, like 'Abraham, Martin and John.' He has produced Christian albums and recently, blues albums. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 and yes, he's still out there at 84 years old.

I watched Bobby's Train pass through wilmington on the way to Arlington! It was my last summer playing little league. We stood by the Tracks. I was sad because I saw my Father had a tear! Never forget that day or that Year! Doctor King was killed just two months earlier and the summer of 68 was no picnic for my father. He was The Captain at a Firehouse close to where all the rioting was happening. People just need to know that this was a terrible time. The good do Die Young!
@timward3116
@timward3116 2 ай бұрын
I recall that this song first came out soon after Dr. King was murdered on April 4. When Bobby Kennedy was murdered almost exactly two months later on June 5, a new version came out to include him. 1968 was a terrible year, and in just two months, the most unifying people in the country had been murdered under extremely suspicious circumstances. It is interesting that Bobby was scheduled to speak to a black crowd in Indianapolis on the evening that Dr. King was murdered. The happy crowd, not knowing yet what had happened to Dr. King, gathered to hear Bobby speak - and it was Bobby's sad duty to announce to them what had happened to Dr. King. What Bobby said was so sincere and potent that Indianapolis was the only major city with a large black population that didn't have riots. What did Bobby talk about? He talked about love, and he pointed out that his own brother was killed by a white man. Two months later, Bobby also was killed. And now it is 1968 again, but we don't have people like Dr. King and Bobby Kennedy.

Also a lot of people probably don't realize that don't research history that the Kings and the Kennedys were very close families very close-knit... When they put Martin Luther King in jail for nothing, Bobby Kennedy Jr. talks about in his presidential campaign that his uncle John Kennedy when he was president call some high up people in the government to get him out of jail. John Kennedy said he wanted him out of jail and he wanted them to call and let him know what they did to get him out and Martin Luther King was out of jail the next morning❤

Try the Marvin Gaye cover version for comparison. It's slower, without the peppy rhythm, and in my opinion far superior because of the poignancy it adds. But thanks for taking me back to my childhood -- I was just 7 years old when JFK was assassinated; a big deal even here in Germany.
