I remember when this exploded onto the music scene. Gloria got a broken back in 1990 when their tour bus was rear ended by an 18 wheeler. She came back quickly with her original energy. So inspirational!

I was actually introduced to Gloria by her parents before she graduated from high school! It was after a Cinco De Mayo celebration in Hermasillo, Mexico. Her parents stopped in Yuma, Az (her father is a veteran) on the way back home to Florida. I went to Mexico with a Spanish-American Club and there were model quality women all over the city. When Gloria began dancing every man with their dates, ignored them and "wowed" over her, a skinny little girl with tons of energy. I wasn't sure it was her I met but in one of her videos a trumpet player with a big nose was in her band. I have pictures of him in Hermasillo with her dancing in front. They were looking for talent. At the Rio casino in Las Vegas, they have a Latin theme. I swear to God people who were playing the machines or at the gaming tables would have people watch their money and join the Conga line when this song came on! People have stayed at their tables and machines when casinos were flooding out. That is how powerful performer she is!

Around this era I was dating a gentleman from Puerto Rico. We danced constantly. I didn’t do too bad for a natural blonde! Best time of my life.

She is Cuban. Her father was killed during the bay of pigs. She lives in Miami. I used to see her and her daughters at Miami Heat games on TV.

Her father fought in the Bay of Pigs and was a POW. after his release, he also fought in Vietnam. When he came back, they found out he had been suffering from Agent Orange and developed MS. He eventually died in the early 80's. Gloria has been performing since 1976 with the band and is still going strong. She has a Christmas album that will be released tomorrow.
