At the end of this performance, Barenboim gave a rose from his bouquet to Adolphe Herseth and Dale Clevenger. Brilliant solos from both of them.

I had no idea Mahler composed 52 symphonies. Thanks Mike.

check out the 1986 recording under Solti, the solo is even better imo

I like the way the conductor lets Adolph play his opening solo without having to wave his baton, but lets the Trumpeter freely express himself

well, sure. when i was at indiana u. in the late 60s word had it that if jesus christ played the trumpet, he might - might - be better than herseth.

The CSO players said that Herseth conducted the orchestra from the back row. He often set the pulse.

Adolph Herseth; your talent is a gift to the world. Your musicianship and artistry are both stimulating to the senses and rejuvenating to the soul. I would've loved to have heard you live. Just one 'fabulous' gift to us all. Your Mahler's 5th under Barenboim, I have played repeatedly. The entire orchestra was on point for this performance. Gustav Mahler was a genius.

Nothing quite like a brass section w/ Herseth, Clevenger, and the present day low brass

I was at a CSO concert c. 1972 at Jadwin Gym at Princeton where Solti conducted. Midway through the 1st movement he stopped the orchestra, and demanded that the ventilation system in the gym be stopped. Some janitor emerged from some dark space, and moved to some control panel somewhere in the void, and turned off whatever had enraged Solti. All of the peons in the upper decks meanwhile moved down to the empty seats in the lower levels, except I didn't with my date of the night, because I said that the mix of the orchestra was designed for those upper rows, and should be heard from them. When the CSO restarted, Solti played for the upper tiers, and it was a great performance.

Mahler did not write 52 symphonies. Could you please fix the title?
