ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Luna's love
These tawny owl chicks couldn't have joined a more loving foster family. Their adopted mum Luna is so delighted to have them, she sweeps them under her wing the moment she sees them. But Luna, who has just lost her own eggs, doesn't realise that these chicks are actually 2 weeks old and can regulate their own temperature.
Tawny owl dinner time
They don't need brooding, but they do need food and it isn't long before they meet their new owl dad, Bomber. Bomber is very curious to meet them, but mum Luna barely lets him near her new charges and instead sends him straight back out the door to fetch more food for the chicks.
Danger outside
But the owl chicks have only been there one night when a pair of jackdaws arrive and begin to fill the entrance with sticks, threatening to trap the new family in their nest forever. Despite being a ferocious species, tawny owl Luna does not fight off the jackdaws. There is a tense stand off, but the jackdaws ignore her and return with more sticks. I suspect Luna isn't aware of the consequences of their actions because she is remarkably passive.
Intervention
After watching the owl family slowly get trapped into their nest on my live cameras, I decide to intervene, opening the back of the nest so that Luna can escape. I unblock the nest entrance and wait an anxious two hours for Luna to return.
Luna returns
Thankfully, this tawny owl mum does return and gets straight back to the job of brooding these two owl chicks. She also helps Bomber with hunting!
Chicks developing well
Under the care of their new parents, the chicks are developing so well. They're standing, playing and even flapping their wings!
An unexpected catch
The chicks are growing so fast and need a lot of food! Luna head's out to hunt and brings in an unconventional prey item, a young leveret! I've watched Bomber and Luna hunting leverets before, but I've never seen them bring one into the nest. This provides a hearty meal for the chicks!
Next time
And join me again next time to watch these two owlets grow up and see the magical moment they fledge the nest.

@@22espec actually she doesn’t. If she did, she would’ve attacked the chicks at first sight because they were already big and they were in her nest, and her eggs were missing. She would’ve assumed they killed and ate her eggs, but she assumed they hatched and they were just big babies. She’s a good mama, that’s for sure, she looked so happy when she first saw them. Feel so bad for tawny mama because her eggs failed. But she seems so happy with her new chicks, sadly they can’t stay as chicks forever 😢 THEY WERE SO FLUFFY 😭

I wish there was a camera on the hummingbird nest in our apartment complex. We will never know what happened... It went from 2 eggs to an egg missing either the night before or day of the other egg hatching, to the mom barely being in the nest at night at all for the first 5 days or so upon the one chick hatching (which worried me a lot!), to the chick and mom vanishing a few days ago - which was at least a week before the chick would have been able to try to fledge (the darling baby bird only lived for a full 12 days). 😢 The nest was quite disturbed the day I discovered the chick was missing (and I saw the chick being just fine around 15 hours prior). One side of the nest became totally detached from it’s foundation, and the nest was rather squished in half. Either a predator got it, or a sick human did. I have to wonder if it was the same entity behind the other egg going missing. I am totally heart broken about it all, and I _REALLY_ wish I knew what happened. I’m sure momma bird is heartbroken too. 😢😢😢

A simply marvelous tale. The shot of the rainbow at 4:44 gave just a quick glimpse of the beautiful countryside you live in. Such wonderful camera work. Now if I see a rainbow it will remind me of the joy you brought to Luna and all of your great work in helping these creatures in the struggle to live each day amidst the dangers and difficulties they encounter🌈

Bomber's a good owl-dad, and that's not a common thing from what I've seen. Great to see how both of these tawny owls have adopted the orphan chicks without the slightest hesitation to think about the fact that their eggs suddenly disappeared, and a day later 2 half-grown chicks show up in their place. If they were human they'd be screeching about 'changelings' right about then. ;-)

She thinks it's hers - that's the reason the guy removed the eggs. Also she was so desperate for her egg to hatch and she didn't see anyone invading her nest because the guy put the egg in just as she flew out.
