I had an ex racing Greyhound called Gabriel Mint. He had definitly been behind the door when the brains were handed out, but I Ioved him like no other dog. I ran a stables at the time. One morning I woke up to find a tent in a feild. I went to invistigate, not even thinking Mint would follow, he always did. Mint layed down about thirty feet off from the tent . A man came out and I introduced my self asking if had permission to camp, knowing full well he didn't. The man made made a gesture towards me Mint didn't like. I know Greyhounds are supposed to be the second fastest animals in the world but Christ! He scared me the speed he moved bettween us! A large black Greyhound with every hair on his body up, teeth level with the guys groin. Mint growled just once, lips right up over muzzle. I didn't have anymore problems. The guy left. That was the only time I ever saw him make any sort of aggresive move. The British Vetinary Assocation made a study which breed would make the best pet. Answer? The Grey hound. I could write legions on the daft things he got up to. I still mis shim.

my wife was telling me that on two occasions a salesman came to our door and they were obnoxious and aggressive, our two Greyhounds came to the door and started growling... they ended up leaving. I told my wife that our Greyhounds know they have a good gig at our house... first of all we rescued them, they no longer have to sleep in a kennel, they sleep on the couch, the cushions or wherever the heck they want. We feed them, they get fresh water to drink, we walk them, we give belly rubs, we scratch them behind the ears and at times they are our big lap dogs. ..so you better be nice to our humans ... or else

Late response. I was walking my boy late one beautiful summer night. He was 12 at the time. A real goofball, lazy beast, but boy could he hit some speed on a run. That night we were strolling and he's having a good sniff. He stopped suddenly and stared into the distance. Then I saw two young guys running towards us. No idea what they were running from but my grey didn't like it. As they approached my boy was in front of me and on his hind legs barking and growling, at which point he looked well over 6ft and intimidating. I had to shout to the boys to stop running. They did stop, thankfully. Never seen my boy behave like that before or since. Lost him at 16 to bone cancer. Loved him so much. Magnus could be his grandson. So alike.

I have been fostering and finding homes for retired racers for over 10 years. Sitting in my office with 4 of them right now. A year ago I adopted a huge 4 y/o brindle male. He is 92 pounds and thinks he's a puppy.

Ah so he's the intillegent one of the bunch?:-)

He loves the dog park. First, he goes up to each person for a pat. He is almost 31" at the shoulder, and loves to give a cheek kiss. That usually catches people by surprise, but he is very gentle. After saying hello to the humans, he joins the other dogs for a romp. Most of the greys I take to the park I basket muzzle, because even though there is a separate small dog area, some people insist on bringing their smalls into the large dog area. Many retired racers see small dogs as the rabbit, and that does not end well for the small dog. But my big brindle boy allows cats to crawl on him, and no muzzle is necessary. Yesterday, I got another foster. A 17 month old light brindle male, and he is also very tall (29"+). Never did any racing, or went to race training. For a grey this young, he is super calm and listens very well.

Hi do you let him run in dog parks? If so how often? Can you let him off leash? I have adopted 2 greyhounds. They have a huge prey drive so I can't let them off leash. But we let them run in our garden. They really need that. If they don't run every 2 days they aren't occupied enough and aren't happy. I would love to let them off leash but it is too dangerous right now. Maybe in a few years. Has magnus a big prey drive? I wondered because he did compete in races. And their motivation to run in these races in the first place is to hunt, or is there another reason? Greets from Germany :)
@rasacerpa81504 жыл бұрын
If you have around any dog parks you can let them off leash there to run. My greyhound is trained so i can let her off leash everywhere. So if you take some time you can train them to go off leash too. Greyhounds need to run for atleast once a day. If you don't let them run atleast once a day, they can become sad or/and energetic and destroy your house.😂😂
@leonischmid13754 жыл бұрын
@@rasacerpa8150 thanks for your answer. Sadly we don't have any dog parks here. Every dog is different for mine it is totally sufficient every 2 days. Luckily we have a big garden to let them run. How did you train your dog? So he doesn't run after animals when he is off leash? I trained my last one so that he could be off leash. It was great. But his prey drive was much lower than the one of my 2 current dogs. It is very dangerous here to let them off leash because there are many streets on the fields with a lot of cars. So if they would run away it would be dangerous. I know several anti prey drive techniques but am very interested how you trained yours :)
@rasacerpa81504 жыл бұрын
@Leoni Schmid We already bought her trained. But we also have a sea near our home. And some fields. I could recomend try to let tem off leas at first in your garden and call them from time to time an then give them treats. Later when they come to you when you call in the garden you could try to drive at the countryside and find some field where arent any cars or people and let them off the leash there. But make sure you dont let them run so far avay you cant control them. Also I recomend buying a pet tracker. If they do run away you can see where they are.

@magnusgreyhound4 жыл бұрын
Apart from the size difference. Magnus is more affectionate than Scout. Magnus would like rubs and cuddles all day long. Scout is more aloof and does not seek out affection. Scout is also very vocal. she will make noise when she wants us to get up and when she wants to go out, or if dinner is taking too long. Magnus rarely makes any noises. Magnus is very easy to walk on the lead. Scout can be stubborn in regard to where she wants to go. I could probably go on for ages about all the differences. they have a lot of similarities too.

I really have my heart set on adopting a greyhound. I’ve been in touch with all the charities in my area. There is a possible match for us so we might go to meet him soon. Just have to make sure we are right for him. My main concern - is our house big enough? I was thinking he’d share our sofa whilst downstairs but I watched your video about sleep startle and we have two boys 5&7 so I want to make sure the dog is safe while sleeping so I’m thinking I’d need a crate. I was just going to have a crate in my room upstairs for night time and if we ever left the house very briefly but he would need a quiet spot for day naps. I don’t want to him to have to be in a different room all the time though and our sitting room isn’t that big for a crate in it (our sofa is huge though) any thoughts? 😔
@magnusgreyhound4 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your concern with two boys. The greyhound may not have the sleep startle issue. Magnus does; but Scout does not. They are going to sleep all over your house. so even if you have a crate upstairs, they may spend the day sleeping downstairs. Having the crate upstairs would be a good idea if they want somewhere to go to be on their own. They may not have any interest in your sofa. ours do not, although I know plenty that do. As long as you can given them a space of their own , it could be a corner of a room, that generally works. The more important lesson is how to interact with them if they are sleeping. which is generally not to go up and touch them. you can walk past them and nothing will happen. it is more if you touched them and they get a fright and react. Magnus would growl first. so you got a warning. We always call his name and wait for him to lift his head up and look at us and for his eyes to follow us when we wake him up. Magnus sleeps most of the day and a lot of it is at my feet when working. I bump into him with my feet and he does not react. but if I started to rub him, whilst sleeping he probably would. I made the video, not to scare people, but I read a couple of posts of new adopters who did not know about it and got hurt by accident. I thought it would be worthwhile to highlight the condition. hope this helps. if you need me to clarify anything let me know. happy to answer any questions you have.
@phalanxcuthalion96644 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't get overly concerned about sleep startle. Just teach your boys that just like they wouldn't like someone pouncing on them while they were sound asleep, the dog doesn't appreciate that as well. And as the channel owner mentioned, not all greyhounds have an aggressive sleep startle response. Our girl generally wants to spend her time in the same room with whomever is home, but she will go back to the bedroom for some quiet time. So I would put your crate or safe place in the most unused room during the day. She definitely loves the couch especially if she can put her head in your lap for some attention. I wouldn't worry too much about space. Dogs don't have the same kind of expectations as humans do. I hope you get your Grey soon!

Great to see raw feeding 👍 My two greyhounds have been thriving on raw beef, tripe, chicken (all with ground bone) and veg, with eggs, sardines, yoghurt, lactose-free milk & cheese. Kibble dehydrates all the guts out of good food at high temperature and then has to replace nutrients, vitamins and (wait for it) flavouring! I am so glad we can now say goodbye to ignorant feeding and embrace a natural and healthy diet for our beloved companions. It saddens me seeing pet shops laden with bags of rubbish and people carting it to the checkout as if they’re doing their dogs a favour 😳

AnnemieM that hows whippets and greyhounds are most of the time. I’m not a fan personally.

It wasn't play time. These dogs are well trained athletes. Mine play together, run together . This was their mealtime. As for tail wagging, they do, . Greyhounds are sweet and quiet natured,

Thanks for the great video, how long did it take for you greys (if any) in interact with eachother? We have now two greyhounds (First Grey - boy adopted Jan 2022) and now the new one(girl Beginning of March 2022 (albiet not alot of time apart from adoptions).They both love us humans but we did want them both to play with eachother and bond - not saying they dont like eachother they both have no issues apart from the first initial disagreements but they pretty much do what Magnus and Scout do - one moves upstairs and the other doenstairs or one on the sofa and another on the bed, we did speed dating with our first grey taking walks with potential adoptees and we found a really good little girl that walked and wanted to know our first grey and vice versa :)

Thanks for watching. Glad you like the video. Magnus and Scout still do not play with one another. But they are bonding. They will wait for the other if we are out walking them. They very rarely lie down together touching but they have done it a few times. They are both new. It took Magnus a good six months for his full character to come out. Probably about the same for Scout, so there is still time for them to bond closer and play together. Magnus and Scout do look for treats together.

why don't you give them their food at the same time if they're gonna be separated while they eat anyway. This could only lead to resentment from scout..
@aliceblack35335 жыл бұрын
resentment is a very human emotion :D they'll be perfectly fine as long as they aren't starved & she actually gets fed (only having him eat while skipping her intirely would be an issue)

Such a nice video! While walking in the fields, just beware of the hunting instinct kicking in. Though Magnus does seem more laid-back, if Scout were to see a rabbit (for instance), she could be gone in an instant--at the very least pulling you off your feet. So do be careful of that.
