Hedgehogs will pee and poop while they run, so the wheel and herself will be dirty, so it usually will be a better idea to have a litter box at the bottom to make cleaning easier

I definitely recommend a big litter box underneath the wheel. In one night my hedgehog makes a MESS which is much easier to clean with a litter box also!! very important not to use water bottles ive heard horror stories of their tongues getting stuck and even ripped off. lastly, dont worry about the hissing, any noise or touching they need to get used to. My hedgehog always hisses when picked up and then realizes its me and calms down

Congratulations on your new hedgehog! Keep learning to give Ember her best life. I don't know much about hedgehogs, but as a hamster owner who are corpuscular/nocturnal, I recommend resisting bothering her while she is sleeping. Wait for her to wake up on her own moving around the enclosure before attempting bonding activities, try dimming the lights in her area so not to have artificial daytime at night (not great to videos, but better for her well-being). I think the same premises of prey animal bonding apply. Let her sniff you, put soft items you have rubbed your hands on in the enclosure, resist scooping her up for a few days, try hand feeding her to gain her trust. Welcome, Ember!

Hedgehog’s are naturally skittish animals it’s almost like a reflex for them to ball up when anything comes near them. Their eye sight isn’t the greatest either and that could contribute to the over all skittish nature of hedgehogs but the more and more you pick her up and just have her chill on your lap she will become desensitized by you. HEDGEHOG!!! Love every time you help a fur baby in need. Cute little huffs. I don’t know about how your hedgehog will react, but my hedgehog won’t eat mealworms any way but live. Also, those pom pom balls are something I wouldn’t personally recommend for hedgehogs. Anything she could rip apart and swallow little bits of. Hedgehogs don’t have strong jaws. I compare it to baby proofing. If it’s safe for a baby, it’s safe for a hedgehog. I also use really small puzzle toys like a niteangel treat ball or hamster foraging toys. I’m sure you’ll be a great hedgehog owner!

Hedgehogs have 4 personalities. They can be super friendly, adventurous, grumpy, and basic. So super friendly is like they rarely ever curl up and don't hiss at you and their just all for cuddles and being handled. Adventurous is just like the name. They'd rather be exploring and being curious than being handled and being with you. Grumpy is also in the name. They are always gonna hiss at you and ball up no matter how many times you handle them or how used to you they are. Basic is a mix between grumpy and super friendly. They get all huffy and puffy at you at first every time you go to handle them, but then they open up to you after a while. Hedgehogs poop 1/4 the amount that piggies do. So you'll only find a handful at most. I read that you shouldn't give to many mealworms often because of their exoskeleton. Hedgehogs have a hard time digesting it. Same with other bugs that have exoskeletons.

hey autumn! I’m 15 yrs old and shouldn’t own guinea pigs but I do. I got them when I was 12 turning 13 and 2 of my pigs are about 2 years old. My first ever pig buggo I think has some sort of small infection. I’m leaning towards an ear infection. His poop looks good, and he has a good appetite. (He’s a big boar) I don’t have the money to save him the exam alone is $215. I overall understand what I have done and how I might’ve just lost my pig over the stupidity of not being able to afford simple treatment. But I am coming to you just asking how it felt to lose a pig so important to you. My pigs are my life they are the only thing that makes sense in my life right now. I have a huge passion for animals and I have been applying for job after job. I’m 15 and I have spent thousands of dollars trying to give them the best life possible. My sick pig buggo lives in a cage about over 20sq feet (5X3 with a 2X3 extension). I have truly been trying he has multiple hideouts and eats bell peppers and romaine lettuce everyday (sometimes I add herbs) I love him with everything in my heart. Thinking of him passing would truly kill a huge part of me. So my real question is how did you stay so strong. I’m younger and more sensitive and I don’t know how I would come back from my best friend passing.

Both of my girls came from similar situations. Neither of them even had names! They don’t live together (my first girl sadly passed away from an URI despite receiving a lot of vet care). My current girl is a very sweet girl who runs miles a night. She will not eat any live mealworms oddly, only dried ones but I am still 🎉trying to get her interested in some more nutritional food rather than just the cat kibble that she loves. There are a few companies that make hedgehog food but the ingredients they use is very bad quality so I will not use any of them! A high quality cat food is best! I have a very shallow pan that I am using for the litter box. The base can be slid under the litter box or put in the litter box. It’s recommended to do this b/c they pee and poo when they exercise so that is why their litter boxes are used. You should also try to find her a pouch that she can totally hide herself in. They prefer to be completely hidden in order to feel safe and be able to relax and sleep. Being in a new place, especially with the smell of a dog, may have her feeling very threatened as a nocturnal prey animal

Honestly and technically if you're going to get proper information on a hedgehog. You should probably contact the hedgehog rescue and ask them. Or even talk to an exotic veterinarian cuz hedgehogs are considered and exotic pet. And they would have more information on a hedgehog than somebody on youtube. Unless the KZbinr is well versed in the hedgehog knowledge then they might have a good idea on what to do and how to take care of the hedgehog. But technically you want to speak to a hedgehog rescuer or somebody that raises hedgehogs or somebody that is medically trained to deal with exotic wildlife.
