A notice on the shoe factory’s bulletin board prompted the British couple to volunteer. They knew little; a Jewish child fleeing Nazi Germany needed a safe home. What began as a good deed blossomed into bonds that lasted a lifetime. When Harry and Dot Harrison greeted two-year-old Esther on their doorstep, they never imagined that over eight years she would become like a daughter to them. On November 21, 2022 the Museum commemorated Adoption Month with the story of Holocaust survivor Esther Starobin.
This episode was made possible in part by the Abe and Ida Cooper Foundation.

Dear Esther, what a wonderful story to come out of tragedy and heartache. What brave, brave people those parents were to send their children away to safety and how lucky your parents were that they managed to get all their children to safety, I,so hope they knew that. I don’t think we really understand the sacrifice and terror involved until we become parents ourselves. You had wonderful sisters who are a testament to your parents love and upbringing. The Harrison’s were also marvellous people as was the lady who bought you the doll. So many wonderful people in the world. Maybe we should focus on that. Your parents genes flow through so many families now, that is their legacy and what a legacy to leave you all. I’m sorry, I don’t have the way with words that you do but I wish G-D’S blessings on your family and your families families. Thank you , all of you, for bringing these stories to life. 🙏🙏🙏🙏👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺

Thanks so much for sharing -; especially you dear Esther!! And you are so much more than correct, when you say that so many people (especially children) living now, will need, so much care and love, when what now happens, hopefully very soon is over!! Take good care and, thanks again so much 💕💓💕

Sorry i missed this live, I'vd've loved to've been witness to such a heartfelt and incredible story. I remember at school doing projects on the children coming into UK during the war. 'Evacuees' they are referred to in those days, we we're taught all about how difficult and lonely those journeys were. ☹X Love from Liverpool UK ❣ 🇬🇧

This story seems so curel taking her away from the loving family in England who basically saved her. My heart breaks for the loss of her biological parents. But, question did they remove her ship her to America just because of religious reasons? I think she would have been happier in England. So sad!! Really so sad such hurtful abrupt life-changing experiences for the poor little girl that she was at the time.
