My beloved Tika (14.5yr GSD) crossed the Rainbow Bridge on May 28/21; she is my soul dog! (See her 2-part heartwarming and inspirational story at the link below).
As part of my grief journey, I began volunteer walking dogs at the NWTSPCA shelter in Yellowknife. I loved it! Seeing how happy the dogs were to go out for some fresh air and explore and interact with you, this just warmed my heart! This was great therapy! I had so much love to give, and I knew Tika had guided me to the shelter. These dogs need love. And although I wasn't ready to bring another dog into my life yet, spending time with the dogs (and petsitting) was the next best thing!
I also began to bring dogs home for week-end sleepovers. I loved spending time with them, learning about their personalities, and just simply giving them love.
In July 2022, I spotted Hiccup right away. (Any German Shepherd grabs my attention!) A small, GSD/husky cross; she is almost 8 years old (many people think she's much younger!) She was curled up in her kennel and looked so scared and lonely. I wanted to visit with her!
We went on our 1st walk on July 23, and then the next week-end (and a couple more following), I brought her home for week-end visits. After the first sleepover, I had created a promotional video for her that I was going to post on facebook to help her find her FUREVER home... and then I decided not to post it because I didn't really want someone to adopt her ....I was surprised at this feeling...and little did I know, it was because Hiccup was stealing my heart!
I brought Hiccup home for 3 weeks (I was pretty sure I knew where this was going...), and on September 9, 2022, Hiccup and I became a family!
I know that Tika set this up for her Mommy! I felt so lost after she passed away. When Hiccup came into my life, I found purpose again; life all of a sudden became so much more than it was. Tika fills my heart everyday. And now Hiccup shares that special place with her.
I am so happy to be a dog Mom again!
