@@SociableSocialWorker Hi there, it came up as a suggestion. I've pretty much worked my way through the videos by @MollyMamaAdopt and had started on @AimeeVlog . At the early stages where I'm consuming as much information as I can to reinforce my understanding of what it is we think we want to start the process of in the near future. Your explanation of LA's, VA's and RAA's is the clearest and most relatable one I've heard 👍

Hi!! You videos are so helpful thank you so much for making them!! Me and my partner are at the very early stages of our adopting journey, it’s been a struggle to get here as I’m 21 (my partner is 24) and only one agency was will to take us in! I’m so anxious about it falling through because of this, is there anything you can suggest to help us make an extra good impression?! Safe to say I’ll be watching your videos on repeat for the next year!!
@SociableSocialWorker4 жыл бұрын
You will be fine. Age should never matter. Just be yourselves, relax and don’t try to be or say anything you wouldn’t normally. The social worker will be spending a lot of time with you to get to know you ( even if it’s virtually), they will see your strengths and weaknesses. If you’ve got any skeletons tell them straight away, or worries then tell them. Make sure you think about how you would parent, if you baby sat or have some prior child care knowledge then draw on that. If not don’t worry. Read up on attachment theory and on child development ( for example stages of a growing child and what to expect) or watch a video on KZbin. Make sure your house is clean, the toilet especially. No cat or dog smells. Clean your front door and tidy the front garden. Don’t worry it doesn’t need to be like a show home. Don’t redecorate or buy anything for rooms. The whole point of the assessment is to try and get you to be adopters. All assessors want that. I have other videos on first visits from SW and the whole fostering & adoption process. Keep me posted. All the best. You’ll be great.

@@SociableSocialWorker Thank you so much!! We have been researching about children and adoption for months and months and I’m not going to ever stop! I’m very confident that we know plenty but when 5 adoption agency’s in my area said take some time and come back because of my age that’s when my doubts started to kick in!! We have our first meeting with our social worker on the 14th December so I’ll drop a message on how it goes! Thanks for being such a big help!

Do you have any advice for disabled people wanting to adopt? I can't see any hurdles on the surface, but my partner has concerns x
@SociableSocialWorker Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for support of the channel. There shouldn’t be any issues related to disabilities unless you are severely restricted in mobility. Even then this will be assessed by your GP, the adoption service medical advisor and if required external medical advice. People with all types of disabilities parent so you shouldn’t be excluded. I wish you well on your journey.

Can I ask if having a shy personality or being a bit nervous goes against the adoption process?
@SociableSocialWorker3 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your support of my channel. Being shy doesn’t stop you fostering or adopting. Everyone is nervous. However, if your shyness or nervousness means aspects of your life have been affected or restricted then you would be best being truthful in the assessment. It takes all sorts of people to adopt and foster, not everyone like in life is outgoing or assertive. Each child needs a specific carer. Some children need quiet carers some need lively carers. Best of luck on your journey

I read in a couple of adoption agencies they would expect you to get of your pet to adopt. Which in my opinion is wrong. What are your thoughts on this?
@SociableSocialWorker2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support of my channel. Pets are always an emotive subject. A pet assessment is always part of any adoption or fostering assessment. It looks at the temperament of pets ( all kinds, even tortoises- yes tortoises). Dogs being the most common, how do they interact, how are they with children, how are they with owners. Are they (dog) over protective?. Do they pose a safety risk to babies particularly and younger kids. Are they on the dangerous dogs list? Are they a particular breed that is snappy, loud, or hyperactive. It is very unlikely anyone would be ask for a dog to be removed or people put in a dog vs adoption situation. Obviously, if the dog is wild, unable to behave, untrained then something has to give. That could mean sending the dog to the pound. But it’s the owners decision never the social workers. Nor would the social worker ever advocate that. Hope that makes sense

Hello, This may sound like a strange question but I am currently applying to uni to become a social worker. But I’d also like to adopt within the next 5 years. Can social workers adopt? :)
@SociableSocialWorker Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the support of my wee channel. Good on you on wanting to become a SW. Of course you can adopt. No reason why you can’t. Your employer indeed should encourage it if you end up in child care services. It may seem strange being assessed if you are a social worker. I also wouldn’t adopt from the local area. Your local regional adoption agency can direct you. Adoption in my opinion is still one of the most important areas of social care. Although “family first” is always purported to be best, families come in very many guises. One last piece of advice, When you apply make sure you have a sound and wide support network. Best of luck for both exciting adventures in your life.

Hi . I am currently a foster carer just wondering if I could also adopt and continue fostering it is something we have always want to do ? Thanks
@SociableSocialWorker4 жыл бұрын
Hi Marie, the answer is yes... but with some caveats. It depends on your circumstances, are you short term carers or long term. If your short term or emergency carers you would probably be asked to stop fostering to let any adopted child/ren settle. This could be a while, so make sure you have a nest egg. if your long term carers then it depends on how long your child has been with you, their circumstances and care plan. Indeed, any child’s care plan could affect your plans to adopt. However, I know of one family I assessed who still foster short term children ( a baby recently) and have adopted three children from age 4 who are now teenagers. It is possible, and let’s face it, if you are experienced carers you’re leaps ahead of other adopters in terms of parenting experience. Let me know how you get on and good luck.

I m international student and returning to India after 3 year can I adopt a child??
@SociableSocialWorker Жыл бұрын
In all honesty No, the law is quite clear, although you will have parental rights if the adoption service know you are leaving it is unlikely they would start an assessment. However, you could adopt in India.
@RowanGT4 жыл бұрын
Why does it take so long?
@SociableSocialWorker4 жыл бұрын
What a great question! The standard for the assessment part is 6-8 months but can take longer depending on adopters backgrounds. Matching a child with adopters needs to be carefully handled. It’s forever, so needs to work. It can take time to find the right Carer for a child, and if the child is old enough to participate, their views are important and introductions and matching needs to take time. I hope that answers your question. Obviously there’s more to it than I can answer in this small box of text. Thanks for the question.
