I buy the little stuffingless toys for my two and they will follow those around all day! I can tuck one mostly into my pocket with just a little poking out and they’ll chase me all over the house trying to take it out of my pocket. My smaller pup even has a favorite that she carries everywhere with her. She takes it to and from bed, naps with it and always knows where it is. 💖

My shih tzu has a bear that is bigger than him but still super lightweight. He’ll grab it by the foot, flip it into the air so it lands over his back & you just see the bear moving into his kennel. He’ll then crawl from under it & climb on top of it to nap. Happens around the same time every day & he drags it back out into the floor after his nap. 😂

Very adorable puppy. good to hear more praise for Shih Tzus. I may get one. I have an elderly cat who has been through hell and gone with me, but I may get a puppy in a few years. Love the broom trick for playing with them. I love large dogs but can't handle one that requires a lot of energy due to chronic illness.

With someone available to help out with grooming, a Shih-Tzu really is a good dog for aging adults! The fact that they look like animated teddy bears is a nice bonus. A coworker has a little Shih-Tzu that she brings to the nursing home where we work occasionally, and he's a perfect little lap warmer for a resident who's feeling lonely that day.

I am so emotional over this little stinker what a sweetie!!! My shih tzu is gonna be 16 next month and I groomed her myself since she was 7-8. As a dog trainer and dog owner coach, ALL of my dog's learn that chin/cheek hold you used for trimming his face. We teach that holding the face in that manner means to stay calm and still for a short time to tolerate being handled by either a vet or groomer. It's so important to do this on a table multiple times a day as a training exercise for all puppies! The more you oracyice, the more tolerant and chill your dog will be at the vet and groomer.

I use the broom trick with my cat. Especially before a trip to the vet. We've never had a bad visit and I think it's due to that, also, I think he has a crush on our vet 🤣. Always choose you smoothest floorspace. The loss of traction helps and it's also cute and funny.

Just not with large slow developing dog breeds, you'd rather spray their paw pads with anti-slip spray if You have large spaces of slick flooring because their tendons and connective tissue isn't as developed as their muscles and they can easily get hurt even with too dynamic play. Many friends learned it the hard way. Cats, yeah,cats be cats 😁

Yesssss! The loss of traction is hilarious when they go "splat" (all legs go from underneath them) and they go flying across the floor. We would do this with my Shih Tzu and she loved it. She also hated her face being wet, so every time she drank water, she would rub her face all over the towel we put down for her and run around the kitchen floor. We called it "face skating".

I have heard Shih Tzus are difficult to potty train, but I guess I got lucky because mine was easy. She uses a combination of an indoor potty (it’s like a litter box with a plastic grate lined with a potty pad-no confusion with a rug) and going potty outside.

Also I absolutely LOVE your point about establishing a relationship outside of grooming. It’s so important to create positive associations with animals when doing a job like this. I work at a doggy daycare, and some dogs I have to redirect more than others. We have what we call “watch-eats” there, where some of them need to be sat with to ensure they eat. If one of the dogs that I’m not “getting along with” is a watch-eat, I’ll try and pick that one and give them lots of love. Then they associate me with food and attention instead of being redirected. It makes a world of a difference.

They are such good dogs honestly. Love my shih tzu - he is so completely cuddly and has such a big personality! They are also quite chill - they like to sleep a lot.

Love the story of the toy-sharing Shih-Tzu mix! 🥰 That's both hilarious & so cute! Must admit I've never been a tiny dog fan... Met way too many whose owners skipped training them and indulged them cos "Aaaw they so cute & smol", leading to very dangerously stressed out & aggressive dogs? 😒 But this wee boy is super well-behaved, & especially so for a pup at his first spa date! I miss my little buddy Prince so much he was a Shih Tzu I rescued him when he was 2 years old and had until he passed away 1 year ago at 9 years old he was nearly 10 years old. He wasn’t treated right when I found him he was matted from head to toes, He was really thin, He had been locked in a small cage for around two years I took him and never gave him back. Shih Tzu really are good dogs to have.

We have our own little Ewok, too! He was a rescue, he was dumped by a puppy mill because he had cherry eye ☹️ he has been the best dog and way too smart for his own good 😂 he’s turning 12 in March! Joey is so precious and looks like an adorable ewok too!

I just rescued a shih tzu last year, and I love him to bits. He is deaf however, and I've been finding it pretty hard to do basic grooming with him without noises. He seems so depressed and like he doesn't know what's happening, and I just wanna tell him he's a good boy but can't lol. When we have the mobile groomer round to get a proper full groom he's fantastic with them and he always seems to be refreshed and super happy for days after, so I'm guessing the previous owner did that a lot.

he looks just like our old man shih tzu did as a puppy. the dark spots around their eyes make them so damn cute. his colors have faded out a lot over the years but the fluffiness remains. 13 years strong :)
