@@FlowerPup_AZ Our Cavalier came from a good breeder and still got the heartdisease age 6 and died a month later. His parents outlived him, just because the parents are cleared at the moment of breeding doesnt mean the pup is free from having the disease in the future. Heart disease in dogs often goes unrecognized for some time-even years. The most common cause of heart disease is characterized by a long preclinical stage when the dog is asymptomatic. Not to even mention all the Cavaliers that get the disease at an older age while they breed with them age 2. Its not as simple as '' just go for good breeding instead of backyard breeding'' because if that was the case my dog wouldve been fine. Theres a good reason Sweden banned the breed.

So I don't know where this 100% heart disease by 10 you're saying is coming from. The third one died at 7 and a half from a brain problem because he was abused for many years and we took him in and gave him the best 16 months of his life. @@thetemperamentalecnomist1261 make sure to research the breeder if you are going for it, cause a good breeder has everything to say for the lifespan of your cavalier. A good breeder will have screened the parents for several illnesses and made sure neither parents have any heart issues. I'd make sure its someone who has worked with the breed for a long time and knows all the good and the bad about their dogs. The breed has been slowly gaining better health the past decade, with breeders screening the prospective parents for all the known illnesses and conditions and they also dont breed any dogs under the age of 2 years old, tho many wait longer in order to weed out the ones who might get a heart murmur later on. Despite what many think, the breed is slowly getting healthier and have already increased the lifespan of healthy dogs by several years. If you are going on the adoption route instead, I hope you'll find a healthy one tho I believe that might be harder since we wont know much about their past and genetics.

Sailor's little whimpering made me remember how my sweet baby vocalized and oh my god. This year marked the 10th year after her death and I still miss her so much. I love a cavaliers nature and temperament, but I can never ever get another one because of their health problems. No living being should have a head so small that their brain can't fit inside. I remember our cavalier showing "aggression" (more like being a little bit assertive) one single time. We were visiting my grandpa and my uncle was also there with his young puppy. The puppy was already a lot bigger than our old lady and super energetic and wanted sooo much to interact with her. Finally she ran out of energy and patience, went underneath an armchair, and when the puppy stuck her head in there, our dog made this one single growly snarl sound and the puppy backed away (and we kept her away to give our cavalier some breathing room). THANK YOU for showing us Sailor. What a gem she is!

He played nice, good with the kids, good with other animals, only drawbacks he had was that he was possibly the dumbest creature alive and had an iron stomach. He once ate an entire whole pant leg. We only realized it was whole when he pooped it out and it came out as the entire length of fabric. He was a scavenger so he’d eat anything the second it fell to the floor, so it’s a wonder he didn’t get poisoned because he definitely ate things that dogs are not supposed to have. He did also have multiple tumors that had to be periodically removed. He was a big fan of running into the road, but surprisingly he died of old age instead. Miss the little bugger

I think Cavs have the most beautiful face of all dogs! I probably would never own one because of the health issues & just keeping up with the grooming. But they are sweet, gorgeous dogs💖

We have had 4 of these wonderful little dogs and never a bad word from any of them. They are really great companions and very stable. We lost our last one 15yrs ago and went over to Papillons which a re another great breed of small dogs. We pick our third up in ten days. The only major problem with a Cavalier is they very often suffer heart problems. Girl with Dogs makes a fantastic job of all dogs grooming.

My precious looks exactly like sailor. Living in the heart of Texas, I do keep her shaved most of the year. She is neutered and we fight keeping the weight under control. Everything you said is spot on. 8 years and she is still blessed with good health. As you can tell I love your channel.

Wow she looks SO MUCH like my Cavalier who was my first dog. I picked out this breed as my first dog when I was 6 because the deal with my parents was "You can only get a dog if you do research, read through this AKC dog breed encyclopedia and make an educated decision about what would be right for our family" aka they wanted to stall me from getting a dog since I would NOT stop asking every 5 seconds for years and I was driving them crazy. Unfortunately for them, I was a hyperliterate child, meaning they didn't realize just how far ahead my reading ability was compared to the usual 6 year old, so I came back having read it cover to cover, highlighted it, and taken notes and picked out Cavaliers and had a whole speech ready as to why they were the perfect breed for us 😂 They're such lovely dogs. It's a shame that it's SO common for them to have heart issues. We lost ours when she was only 6 years old because she had horrible heart problems. But she was so smart and sweet and up for anything. She loved cuddling with us, but also was up for me constantly teaching her new tricks, or going on long hikes with my dad and I. We would have kept getting Cavaliers if it weren't for the insane amount of health problems they have.

I had the same experience as a child. I read, researched, and really wanted a Scottish Deerhound. I finally chose an English Springer Spaniel. My Dad was a hunter so I knew I had a puppy coming. Sherry was a wonderful first dog. Oh and I did get my deerhound when I was 35.

My parents said the same thing and I picked out a border collie… I’m turning 27 in 10 days and STILL haven’t gotten my border collie! I do expect I’ll get one in a few years, though, once the baby I’m having in September is old enough to understand how to properly interact with animals and I have the mental bandwidth to dedicate to training the pup.

I didn't read up on dogs... but I did give my parents a power-point presentation on why I deserved to have a kitten :) eventually caved and she is now the sweetest cat ever, and 11 years later is officially my emotional support cat

Haha my parents did the same when I was four and I wanted a Golden! Dad promised me I could get one when I was 10 and thought I'd forget... then I turned 9 and excitedly said "I get my dog next year!" and he realized he'd made a terrible mistake lol. To his credit, he let me have a Pomeranian (I was a tiny 10 yo and a Golden would probably have flattened me regularly), and I loved my little boy so much.

lol this reminds me of me as a child as well. A dog breed encyclopedia was a great gift for me back then, I owned multiple and read them cover to cover like novels until I was familiar with over 300 breeds.

My Cavalier lived to 15.5 years. She dies last July. She had a luxating patella surgery, a femoral head ostectomy, seizures (developed after meningitis from a tick bite), allergies impacting her digestive system, dry eye, and anal gland cancer (vet had to check them every week and found the cancer when it was tiny and removable without spreading). She didn’t develop a heart issue until she reach 9 years old and it did not result in her death. Medication, specialty diet, and vet costs were very, very high. She was the best dog and so worth everything we went though.

I had 5 Cavaliers, and never had problems with their skins, ears, etc. I must admit I had time to give them a good groom every week, trimming their feet, and making sure the inside of the ears were kept trimmed .so they had good air circulation. They also had lots of exercise so their nails were kept short. The one problem they almost all had was a heart murmur,, so they were on heart tablets every day. However, living in France then, I found vet's fees very reasonable. 4 of them lived to 13 - 14 years, but one at the age of 5 developed epilepsy, so it was kind in the end to have him put to sleep. They are wonderful little dogs. I loved them all so much, and have given me many, many happy memories.,

Aw! I love that I finally see you do another cav! Never shave a cav! My little cav is nice and trim and is very athletic as he is a fetch addict. They do have so many health issues which is unfortunate because these are the most amazing, sweet and loving dogs you will ever meet. Such special dogs. Sailor is so beautiful and her little whiny protests were pretty cute.

My mom's Cav is 15 and she is having a very hard time finding someone to groom him. He has arthritis and cannot stand long enough (what we've been told). My mother likes him shaved, so he's been cut with the clippers and gotten multiple infections. I wish we lived by you in Canada! He was "chubby" in his younger days, but he's been on a strict diet for years and you'd be proud!!

Cavvies are my favourite breed and I’m getting a beautiful tri colour girl soon after she is retired from breeding. The breeder I’m getting her from is meticulous about improving the blood lines and is working hard to breed out a lot of the problems you mentioned. I can’t wait to have my silky ear girl snuggling on the couch with me

It is Norway who has banned the breed, not Sweden. That said, my maternal aunt and her family had a Cavalier, but sadly they had to put the dog down after only a year or two. Simply because it developed a severe case of epilepsy, a common disease for the breed. It was so severe that they were worried that one of the kids would find her dead one day because of it.

I haven't encountered a CKC in person so was surprised at the creaky-door-hinge, almost pigeon-coo sound of their whimpering all the time? Can just imagine Sailor using that in partnership with the puppy dog eyes(TM) very effectively to beg treats!
@walterengler5709 Жыл бұрын
CKCS are the greatest dogs in the world. Oh they love to be with people and are social with people, love to be on your lap or chair or bed. But they also have that Cavalier portion and they love to chase things for fun. Blowing leaves, snow flakes, rain drops .. oh they love going out and chasing those things. Another thing is they are so bred to be with others they can suffer separation anxiety if you only have one. We had two a brother-sister pair and they had bonded as puppies so we kept them together. But when Bella suddenly passed (she was the runt of the litter and had started to develop the condition with the spine .. and then unexpectedly the heart stopped during a dental cleaning), Bently stopped eating, almost not drinking, it got to the point they were considering iv's as he was that down. But then with a lot of love he came back out of it. But we got two more CKCS (two sisters who again bonded as puppies). Now all three are together and loving life. And we can always take one in (like Bentley who has developed skin cysts and need the worst ones removed from time to time) and the other two are happy together waiting for their amigo to come back.
