Join Photographers Joe McNally and Daniel Norton for the 3rd in a series of character portrait studies. Character portraiture is not just about finding interesting subjects, but creating light that hi-lights the subject in such a way to emphasize what it is we as photographer’s see in them. In the case of Ingeborg, They decided to use a very glamorous style of lighting to create an “All American” classic glamour look. Using clamshell lighting to bring out the glamour “pop” and a unusual placement of a V-flat to create a beautiful gradient background.

I especially enjoy the idea of videos that include humor, mistakes, problems, and fun. You two do all of those, which makes it much more pleasant to watch (for me) than a "serious" tutorial. Thanks, Joe Daniel, and the rest of the team!

The use of the V-flat on the floor with the flash to produce a gradation of light on the background is inspired! Great effect, well worth trying, thanks guys.

Just watching Joe at work is amazing. Would love to see Joe doing a real (non produced) shoot... A real behind the scenes story.... That strobe under the V-flat is awesome & gives a kind of graduated filter effect to the back drop.... I'll be experimenting with that next shoot.

I found it interesting that when you started with the mature subjects the lighting was simpler but still achieved great results. But when you got to the younger subject you had to work more on the lighting concept.

Daniel, using the clamshell lighting setup do you want your lighting ratio the same for both lights or do you want the top light to be a stop brighter than the bottom light?
@DanielNortonPhotographer

Typically you start about a stop down, then dial it up to taste

Thomas Cahill - the v-flats are just the big folding pieces of foamboard that they are using to control the light, white to reflect light, black to absorb it.

Good grief not much learning except how to talk around what you did to get the shot. Oh well worth what it cost I guess.
