i don't understand some people's complaints about this video being 'too long' - you got to witness a master go through his creative process of developing a polished final product. too often you see MTV-type quick edits put to rock music and pawn it off as educational content. while watching a true professional go through his thought process may not be considered 'sexy', i truly hope people take the time to appreciate what they have learned.

Great work. A good reminder that even someone as accomplished as Joe needs so many test shots to dial in the correct settings. Makes me get over my anxiety on shoots if I don't get everything dialed in soon.

another great explanation by Joe and how what looks so easy... isn't... it is a master working through to a masterpiece... or two...

I'm really enjoying the combination of Joe and Daniel, and the examples you're providing. The detail involved in lighting a scene like this is so different from your standard "studio portrait" lighting. Thank you for the variety!

I love this series with Joe so much that I've just purchased three of his books from Amazon. If I could request one thing, it's that you show the finished work a bit longer so that we can really appreciate the result. Depending on the device you watch on, pausing it yourself can lead to a big play graphic over the top of the video

Thanks Adorama Joe and Daniel. I like how you experiment with different formats for your video. Never becomes routine and boring. Love this series. I like Joe's calm, methodical problem solving approach. Makes me feel less anxious about my approach to complex work.

Getting a glimpse of the process behind pulling together something like this was fantastic. It will influence my thinking in setting up scenes in the future. Many thanks to Joe, Daniel, and Adorama. Well done.

Wonderfully inspiring insights into the whole creative process of building an on-location shot. Didn't mind the fairly long running time at all. Joe's passion, focus, and humanity are so engaging. And they show in the results.

I just watched this video, wow amazing end result! I have to say once again this reminded me how important and crucial is to assist when one begins into photography, in this case the lighting set up is an enourmous lesson to watch and as an assistant one gets access to something one could not even begin to imagine.

Lighting is like cooking, flavour isn’t always instant. Sometimes it can take hours to get the lighting right.

Yep, I'm kind of partial to the second shot as well, even though it was done quickly, and the other shot was the "big shot." Ya never know....

Awesome video as usual on techniques of the shoot. But my question is always where and how does one make money from a shoot like this? I have a ton of creative images and ideas I wanna create, but unless it's a shoot for a client, I never know how to benefit monetarily from creating images like this and I'm sure there's a way to. My professors in college can't even answer this question

Yeah.. like the video and I like the shots. But I'm wondering.. with al these people helping the photographer and the actors... How do you sell these pictures? What is the value of one photo?

Collaborating with Joe McNally! What more could any photographer ask! Terrific video guys! I was wondering how long it took you to get the final images you were after? Considering how long it took for your talent to get into makeup, I would imagine you'd want to spend a lot of time getting to the images you envisioned.......not just 2 hours of makeup and then snap snap, ok, we're finished 30 minutes later.

While I didn't actually look at the clock, I'd say around 90 minutes. A little time for Joe to tweak all the lights and then some shooting time to give the talent a chance to relax into his new skin so to speak.

Thanks! I feel honored to collaborate with Daniel. He really knows what he is doing. This was an all day event. 9-5, going to the office, except the cool thing about being a photog is the office is a diner set, on location and there's an alien sitting there:-)))

Maybe if you, "Best Light Photography", made a 16:00 video it would be too long, and no one would watch. (Except for maybe a few family members.) But not for Joe and Daniel. For them, 16:00 is just fine.
