Want to become a KZbinr or Twitch streamer, but you have nothing original to say and aren't actually creative? Don't let that stop you, you can always start a Reaction channel! A look at how people have managed to take "watching other people's content" to new heights of laziness, as we check in on xQc playing a person's video and then leaving the room, and SSSniperWolf hoping her audience won't notice that she reuses clips... in the SAME VIDEO. Also, Buckley shares his theory as to why people are even watching these channels in the first place.

As a viewer of 10+ years now, I just wanted to say thanks for continuing to put so much effort into your videos every week. Your videos consistently get at least a few chuckles out of me regardless of the topic and you’ve got such a knack for delivering a good punchline. Your longevity on KZbin is impressive. But it's not just in this industry that it happens, look at pop music for example. The numbers those artists draw are far beyond any meaningful artist with substance. It just goes to show that the average consumer/viewer's taste will always be uninspired and we should always make the effort to seek out those artists and creators that really speak to us no matter how small they may be.

I do have the "Inside the Bottle" and "Buckley vs Buckley" features on Patreon, I haven't done one in a while, which aren't really "reaction" videos in the same way, since I watch them, write down and script some thoughts, and then put it all together in some sort of coherent manner, vs a true "reaction" where it's just the first thing that comes to mind as you're watching something, your reaction to it.

Reacting is not just lazy, but takes ZERO intellect or talent. It is popular because people generally relate to their own demographics, and since most people are ignorant and/or stupid and also talentless, they match the channels personality.
@wcraig4996

@@fomori2 agreed! There's a time and place for reaction videos and it ain't everyday! I like the reactions sparingly, like watching someone do a reaction to themselves from years prior or reacting to a new video game trailer. Album reactions are nice too! Reacting everyday to random videos that you haven't made, saying nothing, leaving during your vid, click bait, or copy paste thumbnails is really unbearable. More people are gonna watch them though, and they're gonna be sitting on cash they didn't earn. The only way to end it is to refrain from watching them. Eventually it'll be boring to a majority of their audiences lol.

The kind of reaction content that works and is entirely valid is people reviewing or critiquing content from a position of knowledge. They should, however, edit down the video so it's not the entirety of the original video. Reaction content that involves an expert reviewing multiple bits of content at once is also good. Whereas twitch streamers use the entire video, barely react at all and then upload it again and get countless views for no effort. KZbinrs should start claiming their videos.

Yeah, if I was Lemmino or one of the people whose videos they "reacted" to, I'd at least copyright claim that part of their KZbin upload and VODs, if not outright copyright strike it. But xQc could fight back, and it'd be difficult for a smaller channel to afford the legal fees. I'm guessing that a largish channel could, and there could be a decent payout from a legal battle too. 3:54 - I don't think this argument applies to the vast majority of reaction content, That being said, There are two major examples that do prove that reaction channels can have mutual relations with the original creators. Enter: SML and SMG4 Two legacy KZbinrs that blew up off of a surge of reaction videos to their content in 2015-2016, And have since gone on to build massive empires consisting of reaction channels, Review channels, Theory channels, Fan channels, and more. You can look up any video those two have released within the last 6 years and you're bound to find at least 20+ reaction videos to it. (I think they might have the largest stranglehold of any big name KZbinr as far as reaction videos are concerned) Here's the deal though, While Twitch streamers like XQC and Hasan only use reaction content as a means of not creating content themselves. The SML and SMG4 reactors exist solely to be SML and SMG4 reactors, They're hardcore fans and community members that want to increase the spread of the content. (Point being, They don't pretend to be anything beyond what they are) And idk if their content is an inherent moral issue or not (Logan and Luke do encourage the reaction videos, So they have explicit permission), But those are the only examples I can think of where the original creators benefit from reaction content. The niche community's they spawned from (Plushtube and SM64 Machinima) would've prevented them from becoming the mega-stars they are now, So it was ultimately that first wave of reaction channels consisting of GameCubeDude300 (100K), Kushowa (200K), dabhdude (43K), Viger The Magnemite (49K), DraculaPlayz (600K), ect. that pushed them to where they are now. I have a slightly different theory, Buckley. Recently, it seems that no matter what anyone does, they need SOMETHING going on in the background, even if they're not paying attention to it. So why not watch a video that has basically no substance beyond the original clips. So, people simply put these videos on their second monitors or on their device in the background so they can occasionally look up, see a random clip, and then go on with whatever task they're doing without having to feel like they're "missing out" by not paying attention 100% of the time.

Oh! I didn't think about you touching this subject, but I am glad you did! The more people cover this and point out how lazy it is, the better. If they at least gave credit to the videos via direct-link, or god forbid, asked the owners before using the clips and paid them a fee. But nope. And then YT has these double-standards about it. If these people do it, it's okay despite the rules saying otherwise, but if Joe Normal does it they get their video taken away. It's just not right. Either everyone or no one. Also, Buckley. Check Sniper's glasses. She isn't even watching the videos she is reacting to. It seems like she just records blank reactions and then posts them to whatever video there currently is.

That opening skit of sticking all those writers in a room and leaving them with the gun is probably some of the bleakest bit of comedy Buckley has written recently, and it was delivered perfectly!

Bo Burnham had a bit about reacting to a reaction to a reaction to a reaction to one of his own videos where it spiraled in to infinity- it seemed a ridiculous joke in the special but now seems ridiculously plausible when you talk about it in this video.

Eff you, Buckley. I know who Ozzie and Harriet nelson are. Parents of Ricky Nelson (50s icon, better than ELVIS, he was stfu, there's no arguing) who was the father of twins Gunnar and Matthew Nelson (of 90s "love and affection" and "after the rain" fame) making them the first family in history to have THREE generations in Guinness (for number one songs, I think)

I'm less irked by KZbin reactors and far more annoyed by TikTokers who duet something just so we see their stupid face in half of the frame for NO REASON. Informed commentary from a professional? Sure. Friends cracking up about fail videos? Great! But just staring at the camera and using someone else's effort to make people look at your face for 37 seconds? Piss off.

please, do a video about all those thumbnails where youtubers put themselves on it. I watch a lot of true crime, and many many times youtubers (known to me and youtube recommended) appear on those thumbnails with a reaction face, and most times (90%) if i don't know them, i think they are the victims / perpetrators the they are talking about. They fkng disgust me. I try to block most of them, but since some months ago youtube don't let you do that, you can only "hide" them from your feed (and never works)

I watch some reaction videos but none like this. I enjoy The Charismatic Voice and Knox Hill for their musical breakdowns. Kinda like musical autopsy but from a different perspective. Your theory about why they are popular makes sense to me. I enjoy watching videos on songs/artists I like to see their reactions and what they think about it.

I think this idea that these viewers would actually watch this content on their own time is somewhat laughable. There’s thousands to hundreds of thousands of viewers in an Xqc stream at any given time. They want to be watching that streamer otherwise… why would they be there? I don’t exactly think these streamers are taking views away from the creators but they are stealing in a way. They’re using someone else’s hard work to keep their audience entertained and paying no premium for that

One reaction type channel I do enjoy is MxR, but mostly for the banter between the two hosts. I do sometimes enjoy the first time reactions to movies and music channels too because I enjoy seeing people discover things I enjoy (and with the movie ones, it's like rewatching the movie in a condensed format), but at least they add something to the vids they watch, unlike xqc and sniper

Jacksfilms has created a whole second channel appropriately named JJJacksfilms that is dedicated to calling out Sniper’s BS. Latest controversy is whether or not she even watches the videos. When she’s supposedly reacting, people have noticed the reflection in her glasses seems to show a white screen, like she’s just reading off a Google doc. Another time she stopped a video to tell a joke but someone had found the original creator made that joke already in their video. Goes on and on….

Thank you, Buckley, for another super awesome video. I agree with your theory regarding the reason why reaction videos are so popular. Although I don't really think of them as friends, I do subscribe to several movie reaction channels, and it really does give me the feeling that I'm watching a movie with someone.

6:51 Okay that right there is pathetic. Why couldn't she just use a clip from a different video instead of just reusing the same clip again? Sure people would have noticed that the clip came from a different video but at the very least she wouldn't have used the same clip twice in the same video just to make it above 8 minutes. Just ridiculous.

Also, admittedly I suppose I do watch some reaction channels BUT it's people who actually have real input on what I'm watching. Like former fatties watching my 600lb life. Big T and Sean to be specific. They were that size before. They have valid input on the people on the show and can tell me something i don't know. I also watch dive talk. I'm not a diver. I don't put my head under water in the bath, but I have learned a lot from those two guys (Gus and Woody. Bloody love them) They actually have something to say and add on the subject. So there's reaction channels like the tart with big curves and then there's what I watch which I learn quite a bit from. I think there is a difference, but I suppose I do watch reaction channels now that I think about it.

As a dude that makes money working at an hotel, it also astounds me that some of the 'content creators' (using that word incredibly loosely...) just get paid to literally do the next the thing to nothing. It's crazy, so I understand exactly where you're coming from Buckley.

For those wondering why people watch XQC, when he barely reacts at all: His viewers dont actually watch for XQC's reaction; they watch it for the livestream chats reaction. I watch a twitch streamer called Forsen who is known in the twitch community for not reacting at all (even by his own admission, he is not reacting, he is just watching it). But his chats reaction is the funny part, where you can relate, especially if you are part of the community which has alot of emotes/memes/internal jokes which makes it funnier. But its hard to explain in text to people who have never participated in this sort of livestream community (And by the way, Buckley is still correct when he says many of these people don't have friends, so they use this as a replacement, and a portion of the viewers also have parasocial relationships with the streamer)
